This was a signal to us that summer was drawing to a close and school, though in session for a brief time, was a true reality to follow the Junior Fair Day. With this in mind we played hard and seized those popcorn — candy — watermelon moments. We competed in livestock, craft, and food competitions. We challenged others to show their stuff. Ron Rice, Senior at GFHS, won the Grand Champion Pig honors — a first in everyone's memory for Fayette. It was a chance to WATCH US ... The Fulton County Fair ... Watch Me Me And My Shadow” Was Comic Success Of Class Of 1986 On November 16 18, 1984, the Junior Class presented the play. “Me and My Shadow , which was directed by Brad Martin, minister of the Fayette United Methodist Church. The cast of players was as follows: Todd Mitchell (Roy Harrington), Donna Perryman (Arleen Harrington). Lin Winzeler (Mrs. King), Valarie Metz (Susan Fisher), Joel Beaverson (Bruce Fisher), Mary Lloyd (Georgia Butler), Tina Sallows (Shadow), Tim Morr (Hickson), and Jack Rupp (Sabu). This comedy dealt with Roy Harrington, a young attorney, whose mother-in-law, Mrs. King, had never approved of his marriage to her daughter, Arleen, who was learning First-Aid and practiced on everyone she met. Leaving town for a lecture, Arleen induced Roy's friend, Dr. Bruce Fisher, to spend the night with Roy. Upon returning from the bus station after dropping off Arleen, Roy saved the life of a mysterious East Indian girl who was almost run over by a train. One funny situation topped another with a surprising conclusion brought about by Mrs. King. This comedy was very well done and was greatly received. The 1985 Homecoming was held on Saturday, December 15, in the GFHS gym. Fayette enjoyed a fine basketball win as the Eagles defeated the Hicksville Aces 90-62. We made a fast start and finished with a high scoring fourth period to put away the weak Hicksville team. The Homecoming ceremony was later followed by a reception and dance where everyone WATCHED US ... Students Selected Worthy Royalty For 1984-1985 Homecoming Celebration Homecoming Snaps Watch Me Senior Class Presents They Run In Our Family The Senior Class performed their three act comedy play, “They Run in Our Family , on May 17 and 18. The cast was as follows: Peggy Pennywinner (Kristie Fredrick), Alvin Pennywinner (Troy Borton), Pat Pennywinner (Donna Brackman), Buzz Pennywinner (Mark Schang), Agnes Pennywinner (Amy Snow), Aunt Alice (Renae Borton), Seymour (John Moss), Sam Pennywinner (Matt Strayer), Mrs. Alonzo Speel (Kelly Bentley), Josie (Shelly Beaverson), Dimple Dillard (Dianne Carrington), Mitzi Jones (Suzanne Yarbro), Cindy Sanders (Tammy Gasche), Mr. Gilley (Doug Aeschliman), Alexander Smith (Brian Eitniear), Dr. Andrews (Mike Nicolen). Midge (Beth Rice), and Mrs. Allen (Joanne Miller), The student director was Sue Ann New and the Director was Reverend Brad Martin. They run in the Pennywinner family and how! They run, they jog, they do push ups, and they all do their part to make the household a gymnasium. All, that is except Mom and teen Peggy who insist that life cannot revolve around athletics just because Dad coaches the Central High Frogs. Dad’s football teams have lost 25 straight and play arch-rival Northview on Friday night. As the big game approaches, pressure and pandemonium mount. Mrs. Speel of the Boosters insists that Dad get the axe if the Frogs lose to the unbeaten Nomads and Principal Gilley hints that Dad should quit coaching and head the physical education department. The Nomad attack will be led by Alexander, who coincidentally is to have a date with Pat Pennywinner, or so they believe him to be the great football star until much later when it is discovered he is a member of the debate team. All appears lost as one after another the team manages to become injured. It turns out that Dad is saved by none other than his wife and daughter, Peggy, who both decide “if you can’t beat em’, join em’. Watch Me Senior Class Play Special Events Watch Me Almost Paradise” Was Theme Of Jr-Sr Prom Almost Paradise , theme of this year’s Jr-Sr Prom, was held on May 4 in the high school gymnasium. The program consisted of the Welcome by Ellen Beaverson, Jr. Class President, followed by Sr. Class President Dale Bates delivering the Response. Lin Winzeler gave the Invocation prior to dinner. After the delicious meal, “I Remember Whens , Wills”, and the “Class Prophesy were read by Amy Snow, Troy Borton, Tim Morr, Todd Mitchell, Val Metz, and Cristin Cooley. The music then began with D.J. Tom Franks spinning the tunes. Bowling and the movie, “The Karate Kid”, capped the early hours of fun in Napoleon, Ohio, and then it was once more back to the school for breakfast. Prom Night . . Watch Me Graduation Day — June 2, 1985 — It Finally Came Our day had finally arrived — June 2, 1985 — we graduated as the Class of 1985 in our high school gymnasium. Our ceremony was traditional with our class colors of silver and pink as the color scheme and shade of our gowns. We marched in to “Pomp and Circumstance’. Our Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Joanne Miller and Matt Strayer, respectively, gave their speeches; our classmates were recognized along with their parents; we received our diplomas and turned our tassles one last time. Then we filed out to begin our new lives apart from GFHS and all we’d become familiar with. Why then, did we cry?????? Graduation Watch Us One Last Time I No more pencils, no more books! Free at last! That was the general feeling of many seniors as their last day of school came and went. Along with the celebrations came some shared tears as the memories of the past 13 years flashed back to mind. The Class of 1985 set out to face new challenges down the highway of life. But, stop a moment and review the names and faces you've grown up with. A lunchroom secret laugh remembered, a stressful bus ride to a vainly hoped for victory, or a line forgotten from a play are but a few of those moments in past times you may recall. The flower sale was a big hit netting $110 from students purchasing a specific color flower — red for love, white for friendship, yellow for want to get to know you , and pink which meant you are special . Students had to pay to find out who sent them a flower and the purchasers could insure their secret by contributing an extra fee. During basketball season, the class sold programs which included a chronological listing of GFHS Homecoming Queens from 1952 to the present. Select sophomores were servers at the Junior-Senior Prom. Three of the class were inducted into the National Honor Society (Lois Hatcliff, Jay Myers, and Joyce Schaffner). Four sophomores participated in the local Science Fair with one being rated superior at the NW Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (Ron Schaffner). January 1 not only heralded in a new year but also marked a new career direction for Mr. Joseph L. Long. On that day he became the new superintendent of the Gorham-Fayette School System, replacing Mr. Gaylord Parsons, who recently retired after 30 years in the field of education, 15 of which were at Fayette. Mr. Long began his career by earning his Bachelor of Science degree at Defiance College in 1970. In the fall of 1971, he was employed at Fayette High School as a teacher of various subjects such as junior high social studies, industrial arts, drivers’ ed, home mechanics, and many senior high social studies courses. In 1978 Mr. Long took the position of Vice Principal for four years until the fall of 1982 when he was promoted to Principal. During that time he also received a Masters’ degree at BGSU. From August 1, 1984 to the end of the year he served as Assistant Superintendent. His duties included the preparing of the school district for inspection by the State Department of Education. Mr. Long assisted in the development and updating of new board policies. He is currently completing his Specialist Degree at the University of Toldeo in Educational Administration. As the new super, he approves all purchase orders, suggests new policies to the Board, prepares the Board of Education agenda, oversees the condition of the school buildings, ensures the transportation safety of students, and keeps open the channels of communication with the community. Watch Me New Superintendant t G.F.H.S. Benefited From Its First Woman Principal Jo Ann Burkhardt, a native of Parma, Ohio, is Fayette High School’s first woman principal. Mrs. Burkhardt's previous experience included being a supervisor in the Defiance City Schools. For the past four years she filled that capacity. At Defiance she was responsible for coordinating special educational programs within the city and county schools. From 1976-1980 she taught developmentally handicapped students at Tinora High School. In 1984 Mrs. Burkhardt received an Education Specialist degree from the University of Toledo. She also has earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Bowling Green State University. Currently she is working on a Ph.D. at the University of Toledo. Mrs. Burkhardt not only accepted the many tasks of being high school principal, but also performed the duties of advisorship to the National Honor Society. She is a welcome addition to GFHS. When she is not busy attending the many school functions, she enjoys jogging. Her husband, Marvin Thorp, is an art instructor at Fairview, which is part of the Central Local District in Defiance County. The staff learned not only the 5 W's and 1 H but also how to write a news article and how to put the copy, headlines, clip art, and features together to produce a camera-ready newspaper. Next the paper was run off by Mrs. Crowell, High School Secretary. Then the fun began collating, stapling, and distributing the ‘‘Claw’’. Missing: Trina Valentine. Fayette’s Harriers ran in twelve meets this year including sectionals. The girl runners were unable to qualify, teamwise, this year because to have a full team five members are required. The girls performed well and they improved their times gradually all year and both came very close to qualifying for districts. The boys' team was only full for half the season; consequently, the boys didn’t beat many teams, but they made many improvements over the season. Mark Schang was the “Number One” runner all season as he ribboned six times and won the Morenci meet. He also qualified for district competition and came very close to going on to state. Janelle Whitlock, in her first year of coaching, did a fine job with the team and she saved the cross country sport at Fayette for one more season.
