I re -e- senting Another successful year for the educational circus world has developed under the Big Top of the Fayette High School. There have been many pleasures and joys as well as problems and hardships; but, thanks to the tireless efforts of managers, trainers, and performers, these have been fused into a praiseworthy whole. As always, the entire circus troupe has co-operated to the extent that a grand performance has been the outcome of a year of hard work by all who were a part of the school circus life. Let us look back on the personalities and acts which helped to make 1951-1952's Greatest Show on Earth. CIRCUS... EDITION GORHAM FAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL FAYETTE, OHIO Published... So often in the excitement of production activities, their efforts are unnoticed. The Class of 52 pays special tribute here to this group of men whose time and work has made the greatest show on earth possible for them. LEFT TO RIGHT: Joseph Dodd. Clair Shipman, Glen Noble. Melvin Harman, Gaylord Schaffner, Gordon St. Clair, and Carl Treat. mm Under the Big Top, a variety of activities take place. As in a circus, so in our school there is competition for honors and the spotlight, yet co-operation in carrying out the overall program. There is fanfare and pageantry in presentation to the patrons, but a great deal of hard work behind the scenes. While there is much work to be done, there is a great deal of fun in doing it. But life is like that. May the year 1951-52 under the Gorham-Fayette Big Top have been a happy experience for everyone, as well as a source of inspiration for future years under the real world Big Top. ---Principal Russell B. Leuthold The show must go on---and so must your life. You have your role in both, and the success or failure of your performance depends on you alone. The trainers and coaches, parents, church, school, teachers, and books--can help you prepare your act, but the final performance is up to you. No star ever reached lasting greatness either through some one else's work or by his own sporadic efforts. He got there by struggle, long and steady. The boy and the girl of today cast the shadow of the man and the woman of tomorrow. -----Superintendent Melvin R. Harman HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS. Later on in the season. Ella Mae Dunno and Janice Blust were added to the list of performing artists. The trainer for this season was Mr. Green, who is especially well-known for his ability to handle animals. During the eleventh year with the company, Lowell McGowan dropped from the roster and Colenzo Short and Bob Shull were added to the list of performers. The ring master this year was Mr. Boyd. The year 1952 was the twelfth and final year for stopping at Fayette. A Trip Ten Years Into The Future Ten years have passed since we graduated from good old Fayette High; so as a publicity stunt for T-V star, Martha Borton, we decided to look up our classmates and see what they were doing. It was agreed that we would meet in front of the old school building from which we graduated. Since the new building was erected this is used only as a museum. Reasoning that Martha would be late (Autograph seekers swarm about her everytime she peeps her pretty head out of her penthouse door.), 1 decided to browse about in the old school. I was extremely pleased and happy to recognize some of my pictures on the walls and books on the bookshelf. Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to introduce myself, Pauline Roth. Ever since my lust for adventure overpowered me, I have been touring the earth, writing, lecturing, and showing films and pictures of my travels. Martha was ten minutes late, and then we hurried directly to the grade school where Donelda Wright is teacher of the fourth grade. Music class was in session and the off-key singing got on our nerves, so we didn’t stay long. We got into our jet-mobile and headed for Tri-State College where our friend, Dean Bates, is Professor of Engineering. Dean was overjoyed to see us and invited us to sit in on one of his classes. His lecture went over our heads, so we decided to try something we understood better. Bill Davis’ amusement park was just the place. Bill told us that he was featuring a new attraction, Gary Borton, daredevil driving champ. Gary is famous for cracking up cars, but he claims he'll soon retire and buy a linament factory. (We wonder why.) Golly, all that excitement left us thirsty. A short ride in the jetmobile brought us to Martha Jane Leininger's dairy bar. Besides owning the Dairy Bar, Jane is the nation’s champion cow milker. While we waited for our ice cream to be served, we devoted our attention to watching T-V. Carol Lucas is a dietitian and we enjoyed her program very much, except we didn't exactly like the menu she showed today. Following the dietetics program was a special feature. Dorothy Lukens, model and demonstrator, had Pediatrician, Dr. Ella Mae Dunno, as guest speaker to give a talk on babies. We thought the T-V programs very interesting and wondered if our friend, Delores Brackman was watching it. So we again hopped into the jet-mobile and started for Delores' home. We found Delores, a housewife, famous for throwing pots, pans, etc., watching T-V (as usual) and absorbing all the information she could from Janice Sutherland's cooking school, for new brides. It seems she just can’t learn to boil eggs yet and Janice is still trying to teach her. Perhaps Marlene Beaverson, beauteous mother of a large family, could help her, said Martha, so we called on Marlene. Just as we were leaving, Mary Beaverson, now a traveling saleswoman, appeared, trying to sell a new fangled egg cooker. Oh--the answer to our prayers, but we found out later that it didn't work. For an entire change of scene, we decided to look up Gene Wilson and see what he was doing. Since Gene, a big game hunter and explorer, was in Africa, we chartered a plane. Much to our surprise Bob Sentle was the head mechanic at the airport. While we were waiting for the plane, we discovered Colenzo Short making plane reservations for a vacation in Hawaii. Colenzo, a rodeo rider, author, and rancher, was finally taking a rest. He had to; his doctor advised him to rest up after being thrown from a horse. Finally on our way to Africa, we stopped to refuel at a quaint little place where we were happy to see our old pal, Robert Gallup fishing from his yacht. Bob is a sportsman and adventurer since he struck oil in Canada to finance his travels. Once in Africa, we decided to stop in and visit Paul Ford in his hide-away home. He's a big-businessman and retires to Africa every time he gets a chance. At the time we were there, Norville Cramer, a commercial artist was visiting him. Norville is employed by an advertising agency and was doing a special assignment. Eventually we got our safari organized to call on Gene. After days of walking, we came upon Gene. He was delighted to see us and decided to return to the States with us to write a book. On returning to the states, we stopped at Washington, D. C. to see what the President was doing. President, Barbara Ford invitied us to accompany her to an athletic practice meet. Olympic champion, Barbara Griffin, was the star of the show. After the meet, Barbara requested that we join her for dinner. While we were in Washington, we called on Congressman, Bob Shull. Actually Bob is a congressman only in his spare time. Otherwise he is a renowned actor. Since Bob was going to New York to pick up a new play, we went along to get a peek at what Merle Boyd was doing. Merle is a second Milton Berle, T-V comic. When we could stop laughing, we dropped back into his dressing room for a chat. He was dictating a letter to his ever efficient secretary, Nora Mae Nash. We had heard rumors that she takes dictation while setting on her boss's lap. but this must have been an exception. All this was such a strain that Martha developed a headache and we had to stop in at one of Robin Wannemacher's drug stores for some aspirin. Robin is a pharmacist, also owner of his own pharmacy and a coast-to-coast chain of drug stores. In a short time our jet-mobile had taken us to an extra large farm in the midwest. Harold Keefer is sole owner. Harold showed us his choice animals and gave Martha a tiny pig to use on her T-V show. And leaving Harold's farm we visited a neighboring farm owned by farmerette, Mary Lou Uhler. Mary Lou told us that she simply will not use her tractor; if her horses can't do the job sufficiently, nothing can. Maybe she’s right, anyway her crops looked fine. Being so near Lansing, we thought we could save time by driving there before going farther west to see Edith Warren. Richard Taylor, Governor of Michigan, was delighted to see us and insisted that he personally show us around. After a very interesting tour, we left Richard and departed for California where Edith was staying. Edith was just returning from her honeymoon. Yes, she's married again after the mysterious deaths of her three previous husbands. We have heard rumors that it was due to her cooking, but we know Edith better than that. After seeing that all our classmates were well and happy, we wondered about our sponsor, Mr. Leuthold. In a few minutes our jet-mobile took us to Rusty's residence. We weren't surprised when we noticed the sign, Mortuary, above the door. I guess Rusty must have gotten tired of the noisy kids at school and chosen an occupation that was a little less lively. Although our visit seemed rather strange, we were pleased that our former sponsor at last had found an occupation that didn't prey on his nerves quite so much. But even before the curtain rings down on this year's program, plans are being made for bigger and better programs in the future. These plans include an improved and enlarged big top . As we anxiously await final completion of the addition, the beginnings of which are shown below, our memories linger with the old. These three old school houses, the two shops and the music box , will not be a part of the Fayette school programs of the future. As we move into our new quarters, perhaps just a little regretfully, we say goodbye to these former classrooms.
