WILMA ARCHER Fi rst -Grade 3 TO LARRY LONG (Delivered at a memorial service held in September 1949, by the students and teachers of Fayette High School at which Reverend Swain was the chief speaker.) Johnny Gunther was a lad of fifteen when suddenly sent to his school’s infirmary. At first they feared he had polio, but later developments revealed a malignant tumor slowly, but inexorably, growing inside his skull. For fifteen long months of day-to-day living, world-renowned specialists tried every known and many an unknown method to save him--to no avail. His author-parents collaborated on a book to commemorate Johnny and to comfort others. When Johnny’s mother says that “death always brings one suddenly face to face with life,’’ she crystallizes the idea which comes to each of us. Her beautiful tribute to Johnny, her acceptance of the law of life, and her definition of her own grief and consolation should be our inspiration today. Every community has its Johnny Gunthers. While pondering over our “Johnny Gunther,” so many fine things can be told that one scarcely knows which to say and which to leave out. Larry was one of us, and in passing from our daily contact, he leaves behind him a spirit that will keep him more truly alive to us than ever before. The things that we do in our classrooms, on the basketball floor, or in the humdrum daily living will keep him with us, if we only dedicate ourselves to that ideal. He loved people. His highest praise was, “Mom, he’s a swell guy.” He entered freely into our daily community life. From some of the conversations typical of him, I have tried to draw this picture as my tribute to Larry Long. 4 Hi, Larry1. What yuh doin ? — (Against the autumn sky.) Just cuttin1 down some corn-stalks! Came back the quick reply; And with it came the chuckle And cheery, friendly grin That always followed banter They often indulged in— A LAD AT AUTUMN SUNSET And a neighbor w th his spade— They two had often done it. As though a game they played Hey, Larry! Where Yuh goin'? From down the street the call. Oh, over to the schoolhouse To practice basketball. Another time the answer Might ring across the street; I'll see you Scouts; remember — Tonight's the night we meet! Or maybe on a Friday At school, from window-perch: Okay, you guys, we'll finsih Next Sunday morn at church. Perhaps his pals he'd gather At home in his back yard. They'd practice, play, or tussle With friendly disregard. Say, Larry, got your Lessons? Another time we'd hear. My math, but not my English--And classtime's drawing near. Now, ALL these recollections We'll pass in quick review To SHOW HIS ONE-NESS WITH US In all the things we do. Now WOULD WE COAT WITH GLAMOUR The lad we mourn today. His habits as a citizen Now SHINE WITH FULLEST RAY. They leave us with this message Of hope and cheer and light: IF YOU WOULD KEEP ME WITH YOU, Just try to do the right; Be cheerful in your classes; Take pride in work well done; In work or play keep trying Until your battle's won; Be kind to one another; Observe the Golden Rule; And let me live through you Forever in my school! --Lucile Goll Violet it F 1 f ! What are you doing? “Oh, I found a picture album back as far as nineteen hundred and thirty-eight.” “Oh, let’s look at it and see who was in the first grade! I forgot. “Can we remember any of them? Let’s see. There are Adeline Allen, James Bacon, Nedra Santemire, Evelyn Bailey, MelvinBeach, Carol Beaverson, Virginia Climo, Clifford Dunn, Rodney Esterline, William Hartman, Charlotte Hausch, Paul Hyman, Jr., Marilyn Huntley, Mavis King, Arlene Kuney, Nancy Lemley, Junior Miller, Ruby O’Brien, Ellen Ranson, Helen Rice, Marlene Seigneur, Robert Schaffer, Donald Sly, Patricia Smith, Joanne Wolfe, George Steenhuysen, Phyllis Double, Richard Bacon, and Jack Sutherland. “Oh! Look, Barb, here is the second grade; but where are Adeline Allen, Evelyn Bailey, Virginia Climo, Clifford Dunn, Mavis King, Marlene Seigneur, Robert Schaffer, and Jack Sutherland? Oh, here are some new ones: Gerald King, Mary Lou Sarnac, Dorothy Williams, Dick Lukens, and here are you. “Oh! Look at this, Barb! What grade was this?” “I think it’s the third grade.” But where are Paul Hyman, Jr., William Hartman, Mavis King, Junior Miller, and Ruby O’ Brien? ” “I don’t know where they are, but look at the new ones: Richard Bailey, Madeline Fitzpatrick, Kieth Holmes, Richard Kinkaid, George Stites, Nancy Stites, and Donna Budds.” “I left in the fourth grade. Let’s see who else left. Richard Bacon, George and Nancy Stites, and Donna Budds.” “It also looks as if we gained some new ones. Larry Wilson, Edwin Mast, Clifford Eckert, Geraldine Taylor, and Breta Johnson.” “Look! there aren’t any new ones in the fifth grade, but we lost Gerald King, Ellen Ransom, Mary Lou Sarnac, George Steenhuysen, Edwin Mast, and Geraldine Taylor.” “Well in the sixth grade we gained a few new ones. Arnold Brasher, Robert Ford, Howard O’Donnell, Mabel Robey, Nancy Stites, Mary Lou Sarnac. But look at the ones we lost. Clifford Eckert, Kieth Holmes, Richard Kinkaid, and Nancy Lemley.” “In the seventh grade we lost as many as we gained. We seem to have added Galen Liby, and Wayne Morgan, but we lost Charlotte Hausch and Mary Lou Sarnac.” “We have the same class except for these new ones: Mary Alten, Jack Ives,Donna Jean Kizer, Roger Lichtey, Henry Baldwin, and here I am back again.” “We had a lot of new kids to start our long pull in high school days. Here are Lowell Merillat, Odella Richards, Barbara Roth, Mary Lou Sarnac, Lois Scarborough, Robert Tressler, Alice Sentle, and Harold Lambart, but we’ve lost Richard Bailey. “In the tenth grade we had the same and two new ones. Iola Markel, and Nancy Stites.” “Do you remember the ones in the eleventh grade? There were a few new ones. George Blossingham, Jerry Simpson, Betty Stillwagon. We lost a few last year, too. Iola Markel, Helen Rice, Mary Lou Sarnac, Alice Sentle, and Odella Richards. “Well I see we all made the grade to become seniors. But there are a few that we lost. George Blossingham, Jerry Simpson, Betty Stillwagon, Lois Scarborough, and Nancy Stites. • 9 10 NAME NICKNAME AMBITION ENJOYS FAVORITE SONG James Bacon “Jim” Undecided Sports Sunrise Boogie Rodney Esterline “Esty” Big Time Operator Sports Rag Mop Madeline Fitzpatrick “Fitz” A credit to Society Reading and William Tell thinking Overture Robert Ford “Bob” Farming Sports Riders in the Sky Marilyn Huntley “Mertie” To be Successful Dancing and driving Stardust Jack Ives “Jackie” Farming Ice Skating Johnson Rag Breta Johnson “B.
