Se ee Goal Keeper, Andrs Jacob talks to teammates. dropped to 3-1 in the Catholic League. However, Gordon showed their char- acter by defeating two of the toughest teams in the league, St. Ignatious and Brother Rice. Gordon continued their winning tradition by crushing De La Salle 5-0 and St. Lawrence 4-0. Then, it finally came down to the last game against archrival Loyola. They had to win the game against Loyola in order to tie for the league championship. With Rob- ert Craig scoring twice on headballs, Gordon’ out hustled Loyola and beat them 2-0. After beating Glenbrook North 4-0, Grodon carried that winning momen- tum to crush Quigly North merciless- ly 14-0 in their first state playoff game. Then came Francis Parker, who eliminated the Rams from the playoff last year. Going for a revenge, Gordon quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead with Wil- lie Felian scoring on a breakaway. But Francis Parker proved that they were tough by scoring one with five min- utes remaining in the game. However, this time, it was the Rams’ turn to prove their character by scoring with five seconds remaining in double- overtime. With this win Gordon set up a new record of 11 wins and no losses on their home ground. Gordon went on to play Evanston, who was by this time the second ranked team in the state, for the sec- tional championship. After allowing a goal, Gordon fought back hard. How- ever Evanston proved t hat they were also tough on their own home- ground, especially with a one-goal lead. Although Gordon lost 1-0, it was with a dignified loss, for they had giv- en their best. Inspite of this loss, this year’s team won its 8th straight Catholic League Championship and third straight Niles West Tournament Championship. All in all, the team can look back on a very rewarding and productive year.
