The object of the English courses at Gordon Tech is to train an individual to express him- self elTectively, through writing and speaking. To accomplish these purposes, the English De- partment brought new concepts into use this year. An essay a week is intended to develop writing skills, while a book a month will im- prove reading talents and vocabulary growth. So that students may become acquainted with the library and its use, special days are set aside each month for library projects. In ad- dition, to help improve speed reading and com- prehension, controlled reading programs are used at designated intervals. Each scholastic level has a syllabus which integrates the texts into units. These also integrate the material so that the student receives a comprehensive picture olgrammar and literature. The study of a foreign language is a sign of an educated man. At Gordon, Latin, French, and Spanish are taught in order to familiarize the student with a new language and to train the individual to appre- ciate his own culture as well as the literature and life of foreign nations. This year each foreign language is handled as a separate unit of study. Use of the language lab en- ables the teachers to assist students by actually pre- senting the language as it is spoken. The lab is equipped with tapes, earphones, individual sound- proof booths, and a centrally located master control unit, monitored by the teacher. The instructor can listen to students expressing their talents and ollier advice for their benefit. Foreign Language Department REV. ALOYSIUS M. REV. EDWARD .l.
