CHICAGO 22, ILLINOIS With no little difficulty the Tech Log theme has been chosen. It is not some strange and unusual object or thought. It is the hand. Yes, the same hand that has fashioned all of man's wonderful works and' has been responsible for the material development and expression of man's varied cultures from the beginning of time. By the hand the artist expresses the inner beauty of his thoughts or puts on canvas the beauty of G0d's world. By means of it man has hewn of great rocks and mountains monuments of his very existence and greatness. The hand was man's downfall and his redemption. With it tyrants have risen and have put their fellow men in slavery. Directed by man's nobler virtues it becomes his salvation, when ruled by his fallen nature it becomes his damnation There are the tiny hands! of the child and the mature hands of the adult. There are the deformed hands of the cripple and the well developed hands of the more fortunate. There are the roughened hands of the char-woman and the delicate, well-manicured hands' of the society matron. There are the clumsy hands of the unskilled and the skilled hands of the trained. And then there are the most beautiful hands of the priest as he raises for our adoration our Divine Savior -the hands of prayer. In keeping with the Catholic philosophy of education to educate the whole man, the studies, social activities, post-classroom activities and athletic programs of Gordon Tech are designed to do just that. We educate the whole man. We provide not only for the physical, intellectual, moral and spiritual development, but also for a full development of the student in the arts, sciences and trades. We educate men for -science, for industry, for business, for the home, for society, for the country, and, most important ,of all, .for God. And so, while his mind is being instructed, while his moral fibre is being strengthened, while his character is being shaped, the student is developing his manipulative skills and learning correct processes. And amidst all this hustle and bustle, the student centers his activities around his life of prayer so that he may overcome his weaknesses, enlighten his intellect, Catholicize his character, develop his skill, elevate his motives, and thereby fulfill his reason for his existence- to give himself to MAN and to GOD. , mfs. Archbishop Albert Gregory Meyer We at Gordon Teche-priests, bro- thers, lay faculty, members of the Mothers and Fathers Clubs, the Alum- ni, and the student body-welcome our dearly beloved and rcverently es- teemed Archbishop, His Excellency, Albert Gregory Meyer. We wish him God's choicest blessings in his every eH'ort for the sanctification of the souls entrusted to his care. And we respect- fully pledge our deepest devotion, fillial love and obedience as his spiritual sons and daughters. Page 6 The Very Rev. Iohn Grabowski, C. R. The Very Reverend john Grabowski, CR. is a true friend and father to Gordon Technical High School. As the Provincial of the Chicago Province of the Resurrectionist Fathers it is his sacred obligation to assure the growth and develop- ment of all the fields of priestly endeavor in which the Resurrectionist Fathers labor. Among these is the education of youth. The future growth of Gordon Tech is ever before him. Every appointment to and decision concerning Gordon Technical High School is guided by the moti- vating principles of truth and charity. Together with the fathers assigned to the school, his prime concern is to provide the best possible Catholic education within the best possible educational environment. Our sincere prayer is that his fondest dreams and 'hopes may be fulfilled. Gracz, C.R. as principal of Gordon Technical High School, the Resurrectionist Fathers have made a most wise choice. Expressing their confidence in Fr. Louis as an educator and administrator they have placed into his hands the future of Gordon Tech and the students who come under the care of the fathers of the Congregation. hand-in-hand. As G.T., the grows, so does the Gordonite, The progress of both go institution, develops and the student. That the choice was a most excellent one is borne out, firstly, by the progress enjoyed in the past 5 years, and, secondly, by the various honors bestowed upon Fr. Gracz by local and state leaders in and outside of the field of education. Fr. Gracz is truly a leader appreciated by the students, the faculty, and the civic and religious leaders. Mrs. W. If he has been diligent, there can be seen in him a marked improvement. He is no longer a , . . By the end of the year, a Gordonite is fully capable of filling the positions held by the departing graduates. And the graduates know that they are capable-for the seniors are cognizant of the calibre of young man developed at Gordon. He has passed the initial test and has advanced one step toward graduation. During his first year the Gordonite realizes that he is in school to ad- vance, not only, in age, but also in leaming, in wisdom, and in character. He has discovered also that basically, if he wants to succeed, he must assume this responsibility on his own. There is a resolution at this time to work hard and rise above the ordinary. His studies become more complex and he realizes that he must master all of these or be lost in the shuffle of the masses. His hunger for knowledge and self-development grows and is satiated as the year progresses. He sees himself budding forth into the full man. Baldwin, P. Balinski, Bernal, P. Brom, Brom, THE CLASS OF 1962 Young and untried, this conglomeration of elementary school graduates timidly set foot into the high scho il picture a few, short months ago. What has transpired since that first step to launch these boys in their journey through life to become young American Christian adults is not clear unless you look behind the scenes. just what has been done to aid these boys to attain their maturity? Well, they have been guided through both their religious and their basic academic, and tech- nical studies. Yes, guided and sometimes pushed towards assuming responsibilities compatible with their maturity. And little by little they have shouldered these responsibilities, overcome problems, and have constantly been learning. Learning what? Why learning to be good Christians, good students, good junior citizens, and good Gordonites. Ee ., -'i w J wski, E. R. Bryja, J. Bryla, L. Brzoza, W. Budvitis, E. Budzisz, F, Bujalka, G. Bystron, R. He quickly leams the value and necessity of cooperation and fellowship. He realizes that to live school life to the full he cannot limit his activities to the classroom. The complexities of school life and the demands made of him by school society soon become clear, and he begins to enjoy his new obligations. And thus he develops those social graces, confidence in expressing his views and social virtues which must be his as he walks through life. In defeat or victory the athlete extends his hand to congratulate the victor or to soothe the vanquished. In the exercise of the various physical movements demanded of the athlete, often it is the hand that must respond to the analyses and jlUdgl'I1CIlfS of mental alertness. The intercepted pass, the last-minute winning basket, and the la-st forward lunge in the pool are a result of the mental and physical fitness of the well-'trained athlete, and in the end the applause and cheers of the crowd for a glorious victory or an honorable defeat make one forget the hard work, sacrifice, and mental and physical discipline in striving for perfection. Br' '1 o FOCTBALL J. Figura outruns two Friars on his way to the first Ram score in the Championship game. After sweeping left end in the St. George Game, B. Michela is forced to fumble by two onrushing Dragons. For the first time in Gordon Tech history the Ra advanced to the finals in the playoffs for the Catho League Championship. Though losing to the Fenwi Friars, the Ram-men displayed a dogged detenninati and a burning desire to win, two qualities which hd become trade marks of our Ram athletes. The year's success can be attributed to a mixi and careful blending of the following ingredients: will to win and long practice hours of the teamg expert advice and planning of Coach Osmanski a his assistant, Warren -Ionesg the invaluable scouti reports of Mr. A. Scoring in the first quarter on a rain soaked field, De Paul was able to hold on for an 8-6 victory. That was the only thing that anyone was able to hold on to, for the game was marred by con- stant fumbles. After being unable to penetrate into scoring territory, Gordon switched to a spread forma- tion and a passing pattern. After completing pass after pass, S. Koziol finally went over from the one yard line for G.T.'s lone score. RAMS ELIMINATE DE LASALLE IN SCORELESS FRAY G.T. 0 0 0 0 De LaSalle 0 0 0 O Vicious line-play was the theme of the day. Time and again scoring threats of both teams were thwarted. Happily, Catholic League rules state that only one team can advance into the playoffs. The advancing team is determined by total statistics. It was Gordon Tech's Sunday as statistics, especially the ability to penetrate into the opponent's territory, declared them the victors. R. Michela is off and running for much needed yardage with the aid of a key-block by B. Sitar. RAMS TAME THE LIONS 8-0 G.T. 0 0 8 0 Leo 0 0 0 O For the second successive Sunday the Ram line, standing as a bulwark against all onslaughts, was able to hold a representative of the South Section scoreless. The first half was a nip-and-tuck affair with neither team scoring. In the third quarter T. Pietrzak recov- ered a Leo fumble on the Lion's 24 to set up Gordon's touchdown. Setting up his offensive machinery, S. Koziol hit L. Aguirre with a 14 yard strike for the touchdown. Aguirre's run for the two extra points wrapped up the game and enabled our Rams to ad- vance to the finals for the Catholic League Champion- ship. FENWICK CRUSHES GORDON'S HOPES 28-15 Fenwick 0 20 0 8 ' G.T. 0 8 7 0 After two successful playoff games, Gordon's hopes to reign as Catholic and City Champs were crushed as the Friars of Fenwick defeated our Rams 28-15 in the Catholic League Championship Game. The big guns for Fenwick were Strobel and P. Geis. For the Rams it was J. Figura, S. Koziol and R. Machalski. With the score being 20-15 in favor of Fenwick, the final outcome was still questionable. Re- gaining possession of the ball, the Rams began their final drive with about 10 minutes remaining. After making progress, an untimely fumble gave the ball to the F riars, thus ending the Rams' dream. In defeat, as in victory, our Rams were magnificent and all who followed the team were proud to have been associated with such fine athletes. Page 85 dw-xx' fm.g Rus I I I.m-sou. Mnlugl-r. I.. PLIQI' 86 MENDEL ROMPS 32-27 O.T. 6 I4 7 0 lVIendel 6 0 I2 14 In the opening game of the football season the Runs met Mendel in what was dubbed Operation Offense. It proved to be just that. After taking a 20-6 half-time lead, the Ram oflense bogged down to almost a standstill. The combined scores, however. proved to be the largest total of the year. Outstanding for the Tech Rams were R. Michela. S. Kofiol and R. Machalski. GORDON SUCCUMBS TO MT. CARMEL 18-8 G.T. 8 0 0 0 Mt. Carmel 0 6 6 6 After leading at the end of the first half the Rams once again lost the game because of second-half im- potency. The Gordon Tech football machine was the first to strike pay-dirt with a I0 yard run by R. Mich- ela. A 2 point conversion by L. Aguirre was to prove the last oflensive scoring maneuver. The best the Rams could do for the last three quarters was thrce successive zeroes. RAMS DUMP ST. GEORGE I4-6 St. George 0 6 0 0 G.'I'. 0 8 0 6 Opening the Catholic League thc Gordon gridsters, not believing in legends, took upon themselves the role ol' Dragon-slayers and handily defeated the Dragons of St. George. G.'I'.'s first score came about when oppor- tunist ll. Sitar recovered a St. George fumble in the end zone. R. Michela's run for the extra points was suc- cessful. The final touchdown was the result of a bril- liantly executed pass play from Koziol to R. Michela. Though the P.A.T. was blocked, the T.D. proved a suf- ficient margin for the Rams first victory. WEBER KNOTS RAMS 20-20 G.T. 6 7 7 0 W'eber 0 12 0 8 The traditional rivalry between W'eber's Red Horde and Gordon Techls Rams once again provided an after- noon ol' thrills and spills. After trailing 20-I2 the Horde pulled this one out of the fire. The Rams with two T.Ds. by R. lVIichela and one by L. Aguirre scored in each of the first three quarters, but their inability to score in the later part of the game, so evident in its previous encounters. prevented G.T. from continuing on its winning ways. RAMS TROUNCE TRINITY 22-0 G.T. 6 0 0 16 Holy Trinity 0 0 0 0 Stalwart line-play by G.T.'s bucking Rains enabled Coach Osmanskils Eleven to earn their first shutout ol' the year. Oflensively it was Koxiol, R. Maclialski and L. Aguirre. The latter intercepted a Trinity pass and scampered +3 yards for a T.D. GORDON TRIPS LOYOLA 15-6 08 06 Reversing the pattern of their past performances G.T.'s men of the gridiron saved their scoring punch for thc second half and piled up I5 points to emerge victorious. Once again brilliant line-play of the front defensive line contained li. Ahern, Loyola's All-State back. Instrumental in the stopping of Mi'. Ahern was F. Oabala who played his finest game of the season. S. Koziol and L. Aguirre were responsible for all of G.T.'s points. G.T. 0 0 Loyola 0 0 Page 87 l Q Jem' sf . . . J ,, T. The two big guns and the most consistent perfonners were Steve Koziol and Don Madura, who took top-scoring honors with 251 and 261 points respectively. Although the record appears none to impressive, the Senior Rams afforded their followers many an excite- ment-packed moment as they always gave the best that they had :md fought till the final buzzer. The fine nlav of Freshman Mark Zubor and the success of the Junior Rams present a ray of sunshine for the coming year. The all-around abilities of Koziol and D. Madura earned for them the acclaim of the area sportswriters. By the Chicago American Steve Koziol was chosen to the lst team of the North Section and the All-Catholic. Don Maclura was also chosen to the 1st team of the North Section and received an Honorable Mention for the All-Catholic. BOMBARDMENT Although Gordon '1'echls Seniors were unable to heat a, Catholic League quintet in the pre-season games, our Rams finally did it in the League Opener. Roaring to a 23-7 first quarter lead, Gordon was never in danger of being caught. Stunned by the fast-breaking and exceptionally hot Rams, Wfeber found it impossible to overcome the tremendous deficit. D. Madura had 22 and M. Zubor had 16. OOPS! Despite the efforts of Koziol and D, Madura who hit for 15 and H points respectively, our Rams went back to their losing ways. After the score was tied 25-25 at half time, the Rams played nick-and-tuck ball. However, despite the heroic efforts of the defense, our offense fell short. REBOUND 'l'he Senior crown of Division St. being at stake, our Rams were up for this one. At half-time with Trinity leading 36-35, the outlook looked fairly dark. However. possessing the indomitable spirit of all Ram athletes. the second half was all G.T. as 'Steve Koziol and Don Madura paced the Rams to a 66-61 victory with 22 and 19 points. LOYOLA STU NNED Continuing' their thrill-a-minute type of basketball, thc Rams left the court possessing a half time lead. In the second half, twice G.T. gained and lost a 5 point lead. Pulling away for the third time, D. Madura and Company stayed off a final Rambler rally and won by one 4- 60-59. Top scoring honors went to Steve Koziol who hit for 28. Page 90 D. Throughout their years at Gordon, it was im- pressed on their most fertile and formative minds that the young Catholic man is not being educated for himself- he is being educated for God, for his Country and for his Fellow man. In living his life he must practice those Christian virtues and spiritual and corporal works of mercy whch were so forcefully pire- sented to him in word and deed. He must give a helping hand - he must share his Catholic heritage. He must be ever-mindful that he is an integral part of the Myslical Body of Christ. He must live his life not within the narrow corlfines of his small, personal world but within the vast and farfreaching borders of the universe. Ol! 96 if-nrt Q-.-1 V2'-ws.-L 'G-if-s-44,4 aww 14- f.
