Vice Principals The year of the big shuffle —the new look —Gordon Bell ' s building program —these are the kind of thoughts which first surface when one begins to look back over the past school year. These thoughts soon give way to feelings of apprecia¬ tion for the opportunity of associating with a fine staff and student body who have made living through this turmoil a great experience. Perhaps my feelings about our school are better conveyed by the words of the poet Richard Lovelace who said: Stone walls do not a prison make Nor iron bars a cage Gordon Bell ' s greatness lies not in its large carpeted areas, its resource centers or new library facilities, but in the people who work, teach and learn therein. To those who work and teach, may I extend my thanks for the privilege of being counted among your number. To those who have learned the lessons of high school and now stand at the doorway to their future, may it open into a bright and happy one for you. R. Mutchmor I recommend to all students, for their careful consideration, the following message from the Hall-Dennis Report, Living and Learning: The underlying aim of education is to further man ' s unending search for truth. Once he possesses the means to truth, all else is within his grasp. Wisdom and understanding, sensitivity, compassion, and responsibility, as well as intel¬ lectual honesty and personal integrity will be his guides in adolescence and his companions in maturity.” If possession of the means to truth, which promises such rich rewards, is within our grasp, I submit, no sacrifice is too high a price to pay for so rich a treasure. My sincere congratulations and best wishes to the gradu¬ ating class. G. Sim.

From the Principal THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN OUR SOCIETY There is no doubt that to-day ' s youth is tar better informed, in the broad¬ est sense of the term, than any have ever been in the past. Educational methods are being up-dated all the time. More and more audio-visual material is being used to help make study more profitable and useful. News media — newspapers, radio, and television —provide virtually instant news. A whole, new, wide field has opened to our young people. Perhaps the awakening is too sudden. Perhaps it ' s too great a blow when the eager, idealistic youth comes face to face with the discouraging realities. No wonder that there is frustration and bewilderment in those youthful minds that have not yet had time to mature fully. Maturity is not the inevitable re¬ sult of education but comes only through practice in handling the responsibility of life and work. Opting-out —rejecting participation, refusing to join in the fight — is simply turning one ' s back on maturity and wisdom. It is imperative that a climate of mutual understanding be established between the generations. If a generation gap” were to become a permanent cleavage due to youth ' s lack of confidence in the good will of their elders and the frustration of the latter, we should never achieve that Utopia of which we all dream. Youth must be ready to give their elders credit for the latter ' s experience and their numerous and significant achievements. On the other hand, the older generation must grant youth an understanding and appreciation of their enthusiasm, their zeal and their impatience to get on with the job. To our graduating class let me say that we, the staff of Gordon Bell, ap¬ preciate all that you have done for the school. We have really enjoyed work¬ ing with such a fine group of young people. If you continue the good work that you have begun here, face life with an open mind, the world isn ' t going to be such a bad place after all. My wish for all of you is a useful and happy life. F.A. Hodgkir
