To you, FELLOW STUDENTS, who have helped to make our school years complete , we dedicate tHiS volume of the Martianaire. The most important thing about a story of progress, such as this, is that it has no ending. Its fullest meaning lies in its promise of greater chapters ahead. The narrative between these covers holds forth that promise strongly for it is a part of the epic of Goodrich School. May the reading of its pages Help to preserve pleasant memories of the past and inspire you to even greater things in the future. l 11 ' E 0 1? Tlx: .Tl 5 . -- l'L 1' 1 Q F Q.. ...'!. For the moment, let us look back. We had a very busy year with studies, extra-curricular activities and very special activities like the prom and our first play. The first days of September lapsed into weeks. Time flew during football and basketball seasons. When they were over, we were well satisfied. Besides supporting and participating on the teams, the juniors spent a lot of time publishing the nBroadcaster.n The carnival came and the junior class candi- dates were elected to reign over the whole high school. In March, the juniors began rehearsals for their first play. We chose the mystery comedy entitled NThe Two Miss Hemingways.N The play required much work, but we enjoyed every moment of it. At the Junior-Senior banquet the duties of seniors were handed down from the class of l95h to the class of 1955. Will we perform them to the best of our ability? We'll see when another year rolls around. Meanwhile, we, the class of '55, wish the best of luck for the graduating class and congratulate them for the fine job they have done. Jerry Moore Jim VanTine Dick Gualdoni SOPHOMORE INTRAMU RAL TEAM IN ACTION SOPHOMORE STU RY The sophomore class began its very full school term with a get-acquainted party to which they invited the high school's newest members, the freshmen. It was the first of many enjoyable parties, among those a Halloween celebration at the home of Jane Hale and a farewell party for Dolores Lilly, a sophomore who left Goodrich during the last semester. The sophomores were very well represented in sports this year. The boys intramural team defeated the seniors but lost to the 9th graders in the championship game. Parties and sports were only a part of the extra-curricular activities in which the class participated. One of our main interests was increasing our class treasury. we did this by sponsoring dances, selling sweaters and holding a scrap drive. The year was enjoyed by every member of the class, thanks to our sponsor, Miss O'Mara and all the other teachers who were our friends throughout the year. FHESHMAN STO FY The freshman class started this school year with bl pupils in the class. Of these, there were 17 newcomers To Goodrich School In December, two members left the class but we gained one in January, leaving us with a total of MO. Our class sponsor this year was Mr. Mclienrjy, who has been a great help to us in our initial year in high school. Hiring the school year our class has held two parties, one was a dance at the home of Mary Kristek. The other was a roller skating party at the Davison Roller Rink. The freshman class is very proud of its boys' basketball team, wh o this year won the high school intramural champion- ship by defeating the junior and sophomore class teams. We have enjoyed our first year as high school students very much and we hope to all 'ce back together next fall. In the early spring, thirty-one of the thirty-eight in this room went by bus to the Buick Motor Co. plant in Flint and took thetwo hour conducted trip through this very large Umachine shop.' In May the entire class motored day at the capitol building, meeting of the state officers, seeing both Representatives in session and being to Lansing and spent a and visiting with many the Senate and House of formally introduced to the legislature by Senator Lane and Representative'3Dlispie, elected officers from this district. All sixth-grade pupils are members of the Junior Red Cross. Suzanne Flemming and Robert Hillier are the class representatives. Three boxes were packed to send over seas. The money for the articles in the boxes was earned by having a candy sale. ANNUAL STAFF Lyle Cousins Donald Amir WS Tnomas Green . O ,. . W 9 . The train ride from Flint to Durand and back was especially thrilling for those who had never before ridden on a train. In May a visit to Edison Institute Museum and Greenfield Village was enjoyed by all. Three boxes of new and used clothing were sent to the Korean war orphans in care of Sgt. Dan Johnson, brother of Clark Johnson. WG We are 33 in number and have had a busy and happy year. We have enjoyed our work. Especially have we enjoyed our geography for we have visited, through books, pictures, maps, and slide films, all parts of the United States. Some of our work is done in committees and we appreciate the work area adjoining our classroom for this. Our Ameri- can Indian project has been our largest. One of the highlights of the year has been a trip to Greenfield Village at Dearborn, in May. Other events of the year have been parties and programs in which we have taken part. Besides our regular school work we had time for some extra-curricular activities. Each child made a woven reed basket and shellacked it for his mother's Christmas gift. Our room was a real Santa's workshop. To add to the effect, a huge Santa and his eight reindeer were painted on the north windows of our wing. On the south side the windnns showed the Angel telling the shepherds about the birth of Jesus. We took part in the school carnival and nad a very fine Christmas party. Then came Valentine's Day with BHOUIST party. The year was a very successful one for all the ooys and girls and we wish them all success in the Sth grade. Sandra Bauer . . Linda Bently . . ' Q The boys and girls started off the year in the brand new school. They were very good housekeepers all year and kept the desks and the room very neat. The children brought many plants to help decorate the room, and all through the year kept the bulletin boards covered WitH monthly activities. The P.T.A. gave the room a big fish aqparium which was stocked with goldfish. Though we had bad luck at the begin- ning with it, we were finally able to enjoy it. The children had many interesting units this year. One they enjoyed in particular was a study of foreign children. A note book was made which covered the countries of Spain Norway, Alaska, France, Mexico and Holland. The children made a paper village complete with stores, schools, churches, hospitals, and all he trimmings. The 3rd grade ended a very interesting school year with a group of 36 children. The intention of this club is to get more students better acquainted with the way business goes on around us. The meetings were held once a month, on the first Tuesday, during the lunch hour. Mr. Jenkins, the sponsor, brought cake and ice cream quite often to make a change from just a plain meeting. There were dues of S04 a semester so we may have our names on record in the national office, Washington, D.C., as America's future business leaders.
