Cards Use Abilit , Desire And Spirit Varsity Basketball With the loss of all five regulars, including high-scoring, all- conference Dick Diener, Coach Fritz Lautenschlager looked toward the 1967-68 basketball season with restrained feelings. Returning from last year's squad was one lone letterman, senior Terry Bestor. Other candidates were seniors Don Eiring, Scott McCallum, Mike Gusse, and Mike Grater, a J.V. regular. Also moving up from the jayvees were juniors John Bestor, Kim Evans, Mickey Fuhrman, Ken Karuse, Dick Majewski, Al Rose, and John Wollner. Another welcome prospect was Bob Bendrick, a senior transfer student from Richland Center, who had averaged 22 points per game in the South Central Conference. The Cards got off to a poor start, dropping both pre-confer- ence games to Menash and Kaukauna. After rebounding for two successive wins over Green Bay East and Preble, the Cards were derailed again by an underrated Appleton West five and further sidetracked by a determined North Raider combo which had been outscored by 14 points in the first half. Coach Lautensch1ager's hopes mounted with consecutive wins over Sheboygan South, Green Bay Southwest, and Preble. Then successive setbacks by powerhouses Manitowoc and Green Bay West matched by exciting wins over Sheboygan North and Oshkosh continued to project a commendable record. The scalping of the Indians was the first in eight years in the enemy camp. In the Conference finale a valiant attempt was made to finish over the 500 mark when the Cards battled the Appleton West Terrors down to the wire only to be edged out in overtime. In tournament play, Fondy easily topped Oshkosh and Montello before withering in the last half to a powerful Neenah Rocket five. Bendrick, Bestor, and Evans peppered the nets consistently in all three tournament games with Bestor soaring to 32 in the Neenah encounter. Throughout the regular season the big guns for the Cards were Bestor and Bendrick with periodical outbursts from Evans. Both Bestor and Bendrick finished in the Fox River Valley top ten. Bestor's highest output for a single game was 30 while Bendrick's best effort was 28. In addition Bendrick monopolized the rebounding chore, scooping in more than 20 on several occasions. Evan's best efforts in point production were a duplicate 24, against Sheboygan North and Appleton West. Coach Lautenschlaer will face the '68-'69 season with the usual dearth of experienced material. Although Mike Galles, Steve Zimmerman, John Bestor, and Kim Evans are slated to return, only Evans will have had considerable varsity experience.
