.43 Jai H Flare With Every Game 0 . . . M PCR In sports are reflected the enthusiasm and determination of the entire school. Fans and players alike thrill to the tension and pressure of the games. Red and White day brings out the loyalty of students to their school and its colorsg buttons crying for victory support a spirit of unity that must be akin to the feeling of nationalism of a people whose country is at war. As game time approaches - be the sport football or wrestling, be the event on Cardinal ground or in Green Bay we anxiety mounts, and fills the air: Will we win? No one will know the answer until the game is overg no one can know until the sweat is caked on the players and the watch- ers, and a few hard thoughts have been spoken, and maybe a few tears shed. And then when it's all over, perhaps no one will care. There is always another game tomorrow, next week or next year, when the tension and spirit will build up again. 121

Stephany, G With the loss of twelve lettermen, including all-conference standouts Larry Bornemann and Dick Diener, head coach Jim Johnson and assistants George Trtan, Wayne Steffenhagen and Dave Bartolutti scanned the 1967 Fox Valley schedule with hopeful confidence. Then, after several weeks of hard, pre- season training, a stunning I8-7 opener against highly favored Oshkosh, with the emergence of hard running and tackling, infected both coaches and players with the bug known as 'win- ning fever'. In succession, Green Bay East and Green Bay South- west were dropped in hard fought battles. Both games were featured by a slashing ground attack and murderous linebacking, highlighted by Jim Bond and Joe Blitzke, respectively. Assisted by a steady rain, Sheboygan North succeeded in derailing the Card juggernaut, dropping them from both first place in the Valley Conference and out of the A.P. first ten ratings. However, the next encounter saw the Fondy eleven not only back on track but picking up momentum. Appleton East, Sheboygan South, Appleton West and Manitowoc fell in order. This sterling, sustained performance enabled the Cards to finish Kramer, A. Rose, S. McCallum, J. Parrishg Manager. ROW 3 CL-RJ: M. Charles, T. 0'Brien, J. Blitzke, F. Negus, B. Harney, D. Dudley, T. Making the all-con- ference team were Chuck Averbeck, Jim Bond, Joe Blitzke, Bob Bendrick and Don Eiring. Jerry Resop was named to the second team. Additional outstanding honors went to Joe Blitzke for his selection to the Associated Press all-state defensive team, to Chuck Averbeck for his selection to the United Press Inter- national all-state team, to Bob Bendrick for a third team U.P.l. rating, and to Don Eiring and Jim Bond for U.P.l. honorable mention. Coach Jim Johnson attributed team effort as the most im- portant single factor in the team's success. Also high tribute was paid to the seniors, who contributed immeasurably and will be hard to replace. Senior lettermen lost to the 1968 team are Terry Bestor, Bruce Klintworth, Dan Baker, Scott McCallum, Tom O'Brien, and Ron Spies. An eager group of underclassmen will be trying hard to fill those shoes. Coaches Bartolutti, Trtan, Johnson, and Steffenhagen.
