Theisen began his distinguished career in Fond du Lac when Mr. Lowell P. Goodrich was superintendent of schools. During his thirty-four years as principal, thousands of students have felt his influ- ence and admired his dignity, integrity, and sincerity. With respect and admir- ation for his guidance, we the class of nineteen-sixty proudly dedicate this annual to Mr. Theisen, retiring principal of Lowell P. Goodrich Senior High School. SUPERIOR, NEBRASKA: resumed teaching, 1919 ANTIGO, WISCONSIN: assumed principalship, Antigo High School, 1920 NEW YORK, NEW YORK: finished Work on Master's Degree at Columbia University. But I believe that stay- ing in a foreign country for a long period of than merely moving the old horizons further you see new ones. You sort of get the feel you are, to a large extent, converted to its eand misunderstandings disappear Cwhich time does more away: it makes of the country 7 way of thinking is the important thingl. At the same time, you have the op- portunity to crack down on a few miscon- ceptions about your own country. This is what I have been doing on a small scale-I can only hope I haven't added too much to international confusion. Finding out about the American way of life has been the most enjoyable experience I have had. All the extracurricular activities I have joined have proved to be a lot of fun, and so have basketball games and football games. For instance, during this schoolyear, I've met lots and lots of very nice kids-I know that many of them will be among the most won- derful people l'll ever meet-and I'd like to thank you all for being that way to me, par- ticularly all of you who have put in so much effort to let me come over here. Our success will depend on such factors as leadership, ambi- tion, character, responsibility, and desire. Because we have these qualities, many have faith in us. It is for us to better our standards as we journey the path of life. RON BRAIDIC In the summer of 1960, the future senior class will take great pleasure in doing two things: looking behind into the past and looking ahead into the future. As we glance over the past school year, our many accomplishments are unfolded before our eyes. We see our high school football team, which was enriched with many juniors, enjoying victories in both the Homecoming game and the clash with Oshkosh. In the-stands at Homecoming were Cathy Liacopoulos and Ann Sheridan who represented us on the Queen's court. Governing our junior class were Ron Brajdic, president: Ion Brown, vice-president: Cathy Liacopou- los, secretary: and Gloria Anderson, treasurer. In recognition of her scholastic record and wonderful personality, Ann Tonjes was chosen by the American Field Service to spend the summer with a foreign family abroad. Looking back at this year's district music festival, which was held in Berlin, we see that top ratings were received by many of our juniors. The soloists who received first place awards and who have represented Goodrich at the State Festival in Madison were Art Kaemmer, Cathy Liacopoulos and Steve Eckles. Looking back at our sports achievements, we see that the squads were bolstered by the -exceptional talent and ability of our juniors. Leading the way were Dick Bender, Ron Brajdic, Ion Brown, Iim Flaherty, lack Nussbaum and Larry Mueller. In conclusion we may say that this year's junior class should not be considered lightly. We expect great things from our future senior class. F 2.5 lim Pebbles Sophomore Class Steve McConahey lim Gaffney Iean Block Chuck Bloedom PRESlDENT'S MESSAGE Serving as president of this class has been an experience I will always remember. l'm sure that you will agree with me in that we have a great class and one which will do much in the future. I'm sure we will fulfill the responsibilities that we will face in the future. Remember, many things will be expected of our class! STEVE MCCONAHEY When the last echo of summer had turned to fall, the newly arrived sophomore class of '59 anxiously filed into the wel- coming doors of Goodrich High to begin a busy and event filled year. Their year of record success was started by the election of the following capable class officers: President, Steve McCona- hey: Vice-President, Chuck Bloedorn: Secretary, Ieanne Block: and Treasurer, Iim Gaffney. Setting their hopes on a Rocket to Vivtory, the sophomore class worked diligently on the class float and the decorations for the homecoming dance. Sophomores elected to the Queen's Court were Ieanne Block and Diana Burke. ln the field of sports, the I-V football and basketball teams completed successful seasons with Chuck Bloedorn and Larry Olson playing on the varsity football squad. Chuck, demonstrating his athletic prowess, was also a regular on the golf team. Iim Lee, Iay lohnson, and Ricky Gilmore furnished the track team with new blood by turning in outstanding records in running and relays. Scholastically, the sophomore class proved their abilities by placing a high number of students on the school honor roll. In addition, Bruce Petri and Frank Disbrow qualified for an honorary correspondence course from the University of Minnesota by receiving superior ratings on a standard math test. At the Berlin music festival April 2, eight sophomores received first place honors in class B solos and duets. Three sopho- mores, lim Gaffney, Mike Gulig, and Bruce Petri, obtained a first place rating in Class A, thereby entitling them to compete in the state music festival at Madison. The prevalent atmosphere among the sophomore class as they ended their first year of high school was one of pleasant memories. The sophomore class, we feel sure, will continue to foster the high ideals they held in the past year. George Kaufman and Moss Hart's Pul- itzer prize winning comedy entitled You Can't Take It With You. The curtain rose to reveal the unusual living room of the Vanderhof household. Al Grant portrayed Grandpa Vanderhof, the philosophizing head of the household who had suddenly left a thriving business many years before because he felt he'd have more fun at home collecting snakes. Other members of the household included Cathy Collins as Penny Sycamore, a flighty would-be-playright: Dick North as Paul Sycamore, whose experiments in the firecracker business often exploded and rocked the entire house: Helge Tolleshaug as Mr. De Pinna, who came to the house to deliver ice eight years previously and had been there ever since helping to make fireworks: Ianice Iudson as Essie Carmichael. an aspiring ballet danccer who also operated a flourishing candy business: Ioe Hupfer as Ed Carmichael, who delivered Essie's candy whenever she was able to tear him away from the printing press, his pride and joy: Renee Louis as Rheba, the negro maid who dished up both food and hilarious comments: David Osgood as Donald, Rheba's boy friend who helped out occasionally as the butler and managed to confuse everybody: and, finally, Sharon Hanson as Alice Sycamore, the sweet and completely normal granddaughter. The Vanderhof's ever confusing family life was made even more involved when Tom Hitzler as Henderson, a representative of the International Revenue Department, was mistaken for Alice's new boy friend, who later turned up and turned out to be Tony Kirby, the son of an influential Wall Street executive, played by Steve Elliott. This budding romance seemed doomed when Tony's extremely prop- er parents, played by Rob Shirey and Barbara Rogge, arrived on the wrong night to find Essie in the middle of a ballet lesson by her voluble Russian instructor, Mr. Kolenkov, played by Scott Rodman, and the house in an uproar which ended only with a raid by three F.B.I. men. Gary Loucks, Carl Roehrdanz, and Ed Russell, who expelled Gay Wellington, an inebriated actress played by Sandy Giese, from the upstairs bedroom. All ended happily, however, with a family gathering attended by every- one including the pacified Kirbys and an extraordinary guest, the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina played by lean Goldberg. The play, which was considered a huge success, was well worth the many hours of practice and the hard work put into it. However, the production could not have been possible without the help of the stage crews. Our thanks are extended first of all to Mr. Iames Schroom, who so enthusiastically and willingly directed the play to its success. He was ably helped by the assistant directors, Pat Maison and Mr. Donald Lubitz, a practice teacher. In charge of properties were Lois Piotter, chairman, and Bill Haase, Marge Hall, Carl Roehrdanz, Paula Wright, and Carol Kleineshay. Q59 ' f-+A. ' . - 9 w X Senior Class Prophecy -- 1960 Our scene opens at the launching site at Cape Canaveral, Florida. An ex- pert launching team com- posed of Dave Schwark, Fred Schultz, Peter Gilles, and Dave Eggers is com- pleting a final check on the first rocket destined for Venus. This rocket, made by the Wright Paper Box Company, Paula Wright, manager, and designed by Penny Kilmer, Torn Hitzler, Iudy Koplin, Dave Goron and Les Reese, was as- sembled by those two world renowned rocket as- semblers, Robby Edgarton and Don Ahonen. The head of the whole project is that famous rocket ex- pert from Gennany, Dr. David Von Osgood, and his assistants are Carole Miller and Ann Moersch. With the time drawing near the zero hour, there is a mad scurry on the launching pad as engineers Bob Hochrein, Bob Tadman, Bob lung and Bob Shirey make final checks and preparations on the rocket. Before any further preparations are made, the rocket was manned. With the crew completed and the rocket poised for takeoff, the time has come for the boarding of the passengers. The first couple to buy tickets were Sherry Bruns and Lonnie Rauls, who stated that they are tak- ing this trip for their second honeymoon. The rest of the passenger list, which is made up of prom- inent people from all over the United States, reads as follows: Steve Bassewitz, a successful gov- ernor from the State of Louisiana: Ieanette Ackerer, an artist from the Ceaser Cibik Art Studio: Cathy Collins, a homemaker and wife of Harvey Aschenbrenner, the famous bread tycoon: Pat Brunet, manager and only patron of Al Grant's Expresso Coffee Shop: Barb and Betty Green, popular sing- ers from Broken Elbow, Nebraska: Peter Ochs, a Chicago doctor and his two assistants, Pat Merk and Ieannine Marvin: businessmen who represent everything from baby bottle manufacturers to the United States Census Bureau are Tom Cutler, Dick Daleiden, Gary Iaberg and Bill Haase: and our favorite linguist, Scott Rodman, who will do all our interpreting on Venus. The very capable chaperones, who represent the rocket manufacturer on this trip, are Donna Ziegenhagen and Vince Prehn, and Sharon Hansen and Dick North. With final preparations made, all passengers aboard, and the rocket fueled up, the countdown be- gins. l0-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-l Blastoff!!! 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-l Blastoffl Silence. It appears that there has been a miscalculation by our team of engineers. Since there is only one thing to do, we place a long distance telephone call to the Civilian Space Agency, where receptionist Polly Rickleffs trans- fers our call to the heads of the agency, Dick Sandberg and Helge Tolleschaug. After talking to Page S ty-two us, they feed the information we received into their computer, Iim Masarik, who gives this answer to our problem, You are in dire need of a crew that will not experience technical difficulties. I suggest the follow- ing crew to replace those who must be replaced for obvious reasons: Sandy Giese, Sandy Bloedorn, Sandy Schuppe and Sandy Firle. When this infor- mation was relayed back to Cape Canaveral, it was followed to a tee. Two days later, with the crew in position, it was again time for takeoff. 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Blastoff. This time the firing was a success. As our ten day journey begins, we are all recovering from our blast- off blackout. Due to this, we accomplished nothing during our first day in space. After traveling over 100,000 miles, we were fully recovered and ready for nine days of enjoyment aboard our ship. This superb rocket has all the features of a modern hotel: pool: dance floor and bar. The recreational director for our trip, chosen by the passengers, is lean Goldberg who has planned everything from shuffleboard to post- office. In the bar there is a combo consisting of Pat I Buslaff, Ianice Schoepke, Carolyn Posey, Luane Let- tau, Mary Priest and Barbara Bunker. Performing with the combo is a chorus line with these favor- its from Radio City Music Hall: Ianice Iudson, Carol Wollersheim, Karleen Behnke, Louis Bird, Mike Murphy, Nick Micklos and Ray Spies. Setting up drinks at the bar are Nordis Heyerdahl and lim Keifenheim. The lifeguards at the pool are Lana Haack, jim Hausinger, Ianet Kirchoff and Karl Koehler. For the more intellectual passengers on the trip, there is a movie starring Corrine Com- mins and Ray Christ. The movie is entitled Those Terrible, Terrible Years, or My Many Years of Teaching by Miss Stepnoski. For the nine days of our trip, we lived in comfort and ease as our government travel agents, Mike Senger, Gary Friess, Mary Michels, and Iosie Redman, had plan- ned. As we start to land, we can see the city of Molehill below us. Stepping off the rocket we are greeted by the president and his wife, Roger Demboski and Barbara Allen Demboski. Ioining the president are dignitaries representing the many states of Venus, including: Dick Blarney, rep- resenting the Northern State Of C0f1fUSi0I17 loe Hupfer from the State of Shock: and Mis- ses Pat Malson and Nancy Sommers who are appearing for the premier, Gary Loucks, from the State of Hangover. After enjoying a meal at the l0lVz Club run by Bill laber, we were taken on a tour of the city by our four guides, Ianet Avery, Tony Ferdinand, Gretchen Hansen - w and Charles Faber. The first place we visited was the An Museum where the main at- traction was a painting by that famous Venecian paint- Pagn- 5 only-thrvv er, Louise Whelan. The gallery also included canvasses by Tim Tindall. Ianet Beusch, Rosy Willes, and Shar- on Trescott. Along with the paintings there was a great deal of sculpture by Ierry Pollom, Les Huck, Orville Snyder and Margaret Whitford. Next we were taken to the capital of Venus, Peyton Place, where we view- ed spectacular buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Mesner. To round out our exhausting day we were iak- en by the president to the house of the Elsa Maxwell of Venus, Karen Guyette. After one of her famous long parties, we returned to our hotel for a good night's sleep of two hours. The following morning we met in --4 the lobby of the hotel where we were introduced to realtors, Marlene Glass, Marge Hall, Lois Piotter and Dave Kopp, who will aid us in finding a residence in Peyton Place. Before looking at homes, we were conducted through some of the industries in the city. The 1959 football season opened on a highly optimistic note with eight veterans returning from last year's thrilling team which finished second in the Fox River Conference. The performance exhibited in the first several games, however, gave every appearance that the Cards were headed in the wrong direction. At this point Coach Capicik reshufiled the line-up, worked the squad harder than ever, and instilled a determination that transformed them into a rugged, highly respected organization. The revitalized Cards, in their next encounter, our Homecoming, soundly walloped Sheboygan North, but then lost a heart- breaker to a highly-favored Manitowoc eleven which was clearly outplayed. The following contest was played in a downpour that not only allowed a scrappy East Green Bay team to beat us but also saw our top-rated passing attack washed down the drain. Against Appleton our Cards all but tore the Terriors apart for three quarters only to have several bad breaks result in two cheap touchdowns and turn the tables on us l3-7. Against our arch-rival, Oshkosh, however, Coach Capicik's stalwarts were not to be denied: they came through in great style by earning a well deserved 10-7 final season victory over a rugged Indian team, With this year's squad composed mostly of underclassmen it is quite likely that Coach Capicik will field an aggregation in the autumn of '60 with the experience, speed, and desire to give us a winner. Some promising sophomores coming up from the Iayvee team will fill in the gaps and provide good, strong reserve strength. Two members of the team were selected for special honors. The Valley sports' writers named Iim Flaherty, a junior, and Mike Murphy, a senior, to the All-Con- ference team. ln addition Mike Murphy was honored by the state scribes by being placed on the All-State honorable mention list. Mike was also honored by his teammates who selected him as most valuable , and as co- captain along with Nick Micklos. Although Coach Gerald Pol lei's Iayvees had a disastrous winvloss record, they often came up with some sound, tough foot- ball. SMEDBERG Basketball COACH OF THE YEAR title was bestowed upon Smedberg by his Con- ference fellow coaches for the splendid job he did in developing a young, in- experienced squad. Fellow coaches were quick to recognize the superb coaching of the Cardinal mentor plus the spirit and exemplary conduct dis- played by his proteges. Coach Carl Swede Srnedberg's resignation at the end of the season was a disappointment to his many friends, fellow workers, and players who train- ed under him. Basketball Honors During '59-'60 Season The fact that so many of our able mention list. Murphy Tadman Brown Wxlderman Nussbaum Esther Hochrein P hoopsters won special honors was clearly an indication of their fine teamwork and unself ish attitude. Al Esther was A awarded an All-Conference po sition and Bob Hochrein was chosen to the second mythical five. In addition, Ion Brown lack Nussbaum, Bob Tadman Mike Murphy, and Ken Wilder man were named to the honor age Se e ty Bob Hochrein Ray Christ Mike Murphy 1-toger rreinerg non ran Basketball With the loss of such fine performers as Bestor, King, Damm, and Rose from the '58-'59 squad, Coach Smedberg was resigned to a rebuilding year. Even the dopesters, in their pre-season ratings, had the Cards pegged as the weak sister of the Conference. However, our boys had other ideas. After losing the first three of four games the Cards jelled into a smooth working aggregation. In the next four contests they leveled off the three top-rated clubs of the Conference, Oshkosh, Appleton, and Sheboygan Central, respectively, with Green Bay East included for good measure. Then, in the second round, they assured themselves of a successful season by administering the double wham- my to Oshkosh in an exciting 60-55 game on the opponent's floor. From that point they were contend- ers for the title right down to the Wire. Coach Smedberg employed a clever possession-type ball interspaced with a running game which kept the fans on the edge of their seats. The defensive press was no obstacle to our fighting five, but even more noteworthy was the balanced attack, teamwork, and a hunger for victory. Al Esther, a transfer from Green Bay West, was an All-Conference selection while Bob Hochrein was named to the second team. Ion Brown, lack Nussbaum, Bob Tadman, Mike Murphy, and Ken Wilderman all received honorable mention. In a vote of teammates, Bob Hochrein was chosen team honorary captain, and Ion Brown was awarded the distinction of most valuable player. Additional lettermen were Roger Freiberg, Bud Aspatore, and Chuck Brunau. Clark Palmer and Steve Eckles were granted letters for their excellent job as team managers. The loss of Hochrein, Murphy, Tadman, Freiberg, and Christ by graduation will be keenly felt. Coach Lautenschlager, who will assume head coaching duties in '60-'61, completed a highly successful year with a battling Iayvee squad. With a Conference record of 10-4, this gang of warriors missed first place by the margin of one game. This fine array of spirited boys will surely give next year's varsity a boost. C. SMEDBERG M. After enjoying a most successiul '59 season during which his charges won two triangulars, three duals, and seconds in both the Fox Valley Conference and the Valley Relays, Coach Del Stacy appeared skeptical about the new campaign. Could it be because heavy point-getter Darrell McArthur plus several other reliables had moved on? Nevertheless, seventy-five likely looking prospects, including nineteen lettermen, were on deck for opening drills. Senior lettermen were Dan Meiss and Pat Brunet, halt-milers: Lon Rauls, high jump and high hurdles: Mike Murphy and Tom Cutler, weights: Gary Loucks and Caeser Cibik, pole vault: and Frank Mesner, mile. Iunior lettermen reporting were Larry Mueller, pole vault: Tom Stevens, high hurdles: lim Gilmore, 440 and relays: Dick Bender, weights. The two sophomore lettermen returning were Rick Gilmore, who specializes in the 440 and relays, and the versatile speed- ster and broad jumper, Iim Lee, who recently underwent a serious knee operation and wasn't expected to compete this spring. However, Iim has made an amazing recovery and can be counted on to pile up points in the 100, 220, and broad jump. Because illness and jobs drastically cut into the overall strength ot the Cards, they got oft to a poor start against West Bend, losing 56-52. In the second outing, however, the Stacymen took the measure ot the strong Appletno and Neenah squads in a triangular. Outstanding were Iim Lee with three tirsts: Frank Messner, a winner in the mile: and both Dick Bender and Mike Murphy in the weights. In their third encounter, another triangular against Berlin and Ripon, our Cards were way out front when the rains came, forcing a cancellation. On May 3, the squad, per- forming below standard, bowed to Sheboygan North in a hairsplitter. Firsts were won by Mike Murphy, Pat Brunet. lim Gilmore, Lon Rauls, Caesar Cibik, Iim Lee, and by the sprint medley team consisting oi Rick Gil- more, lay Iohnson, Paul Frank, and Dave Miess. In the Fox Valley Conference Meet on May 15, our sprint medley team put on a thrilling record-breaking performance. The best the team could do, however, was sixth. A dual with Oshkosh, the State Qualifying Meet, and the Valley Relays are still on the docket. Coach Stacy and assistant Coach Harold Knueppel are still expecting big things from their chargers. With only tivo lettermen returningeirom a crack '59 squad, Coach Fritz Loutenschlager was laced with a tremendous task oi whipping together a winning combination. In all, fifty-nine enthusiastic aspirants reported to Coach Lautenschlager and Assistant Coach Woody Bilse. The championship '59 club compiled a neat l0-2 record in regular season play, and then won eight successive WIAA tour- nament games only to lose out to Oconomowoc, 3-2. in the State Finals. Lost from that superb nine are such stars as Bob Felda, Dick Bestor, Tim Hurst, and pitcher extraordinary, Hub King, who posted a spectacular 33-2 over-all record in high school and American Legion competition including several no-hitters. Cold. rainy weather has not only hindered the conditioning oi the '60 squad but has already caused several postponements. However, in games to-date, our Cards have split in a home and home series with Menasha St. Mary's, 7-12 and 7-5, gained a split in a doubleheader against Oshkosh, 7-2 and 2-3, and dropped a doubleheader to Manitowoc by the identical scores ot 3-1. Although Dave Schwark has been meeting the ball consistently, boosting a near 500 average, the ability to hit with regu- larity has been the real bugaboo ot the Card nine. Pitching, with Karl Schmidt and Iim Kalk shouldering most of the burden, has been improving with each game. Completing the mound staii are Dan Buss and Bill Eiring. Doing the greater share of the backstopping has been Randy Hop- ton. Bob Bestor, and Ron Bradic. Infield chores has been in the hands oi Larry Wetzel, Tom Soukup, Chuck Bru- nau, and Dick Wirtz, and rounding out the outfield are Dave Schwark, lim Schmidt and Bob Hochrein. The util- ity problem gives Coach Lautenschlager no worry as Iim Macksam and Tony Meade are everready for the infield or outfield respectively. With continued good pitching plus some improvement at the plate, the Cards can still turn the '60 regular sea- son into a winner. Also, with the WIAA tournament opening on May 16 against Kewaskum at Fairgrounds Park, our Fondy nine could cut a real swath in the ies- tivities-perhaps win the iinal one this year. M. Merriman, after a one year respite from all tennis warfare, was anxious to get his candidates in condition tor a tough schedule. In this group were three lettermen, all juniors, consisting ot Ion Brown, Bud Aspatore. cmd last year's number one man, Ken Wilderman. The composition ot the rest oi the squad included eleven juniors, three seniors, seven sophomores, and three freshmen up from Roosevelt. The 1959 squad, under Coach Woody Bilse, was eager but seriously handicapped by inexperience. The best they could garner in the strong Valley Conference was a fifth. This spring, however, with a trio of tried cam- paigners, Coach Merriman is in hopes ot improving that record, The schedule calls tor eleven dual meets prior to the Conference meet on May 21 at Appleton. Seven of the scheduled eleven dual meets, including West Bend, Waupun, Manitowoc, Oshkosh, Sheboygan Central, Sheboygan North, and Neenah are slated lor the home courts. Away, we will tangle with Menasha, Appleton. Oshkosh, and Sheboygan Central. At this writing, four matches have been played, resulting in wins over West Bend, 4-3, Waupun, 7-O, She- boygan Central, 6-l, and a loss to Manitowoc, 6-1. This was the thought foremost in everyone's mind when, on May 5, 1960, news was received of the death of Mary Wagner. Teachers and classmates alike fondly remember her friendliness toward everyone. As one of her closest friends remarked, She never passed me in the hall without saying 'hi' or stopping to talk for a while. Mary's quiet, sweet disposition, her ready smile, and her bright hello are the fine characteristics for which she will be remembered. An excellent student, Mary attained high scholastic honors throughout her high school days. Although much of her time was devoted to school work, Mary found time to sing in the choir and to assist the business staff of the Cardinal. Teachers admired her cooperative attitude and dependabiltiy. School was an im- portant part of Mary's life: however, she also had many outside interests. She enjoyed church work and participated in many of its activities. Working on handicraft projects and sewing for herself and her family filled many happy hours. When death chose Mary Wagner, it took a very special person. Yet because Mary joyfully and successfully lived life, her life somehow seems com- plete. Memories of Mary are happy ones which will be retained forever. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Fellow classmates, at this commencement time we are to go our individual ways. As president of the Senior Class, I take this opportunity to thank the faculty and all who helped us to prepare for this new phase of our lives. It is our responsibility to build on the foundation we have laid with their guidance. Our days in school have been filled with many memorable occasions, but not until May 5, 1960 did tragedy enter into our high school lives. Mary Wagner passed from us. She was the kind of girl that always wore a smile and never tried to hurt anyone. She was always ready to help her classmates with an extra hard physics problem or a confusing sentence in English. Her kind smile and radiant good will made an everlasting impression on all who knew her. Because Mary was that kind of person, memories of her will live forever with her friends.
