CLASS PHOPHECY When I graduated on Nlay 28 19:19 little drd I realize that the class I graduated with would achieve so much success I recall several thmgs that happened that year which had some influence on the present The summer before the 59 school term began the citizens of Goodlettsville voted to mcorporate Although we were sometimes a little lazy we became the first class to graduate from the city of C-oodlettsville We went out to seek our fortunes just as the seniors had done many times before us perhaps a little bewildered but with determination Tonight we are returning to Goodlettsvllle wearing the laurels of success As a town grows its interests grow too In he past ten years Goodlettsvtlle has changed considerably It has recently become the proud owner of a Communrty Auditorium The eminent architect Kenneth Douglas was the designer of the building the interior decorating bemg done by Brenda Tune Several of us decided to use the opemng of the auditorium as an opportunity for a reunion of the class of 59 Brenda Settle editor of the Nashville Banner was helpful tn spreading the news As plans for the reunion circulated Sonny Ralph star of the current Broadway hit MacDuly used his influence to bring the entire cast of the show to perform for us Incl dently the play was written by Mecca Cummings who teaches history at West Pomt Also in the cast is Kathy Webb Well the big event rs finally here and I bemg on the wel commg committee get to see everyone as they arrive First to appear is the Mayor of Goodlettsvtlle Henry Key who will serve as NI C for the evening Next is Sam McPherson who IS president of the Chamber of Commerce It looks as though this rs several of the members of the or chestra commg now Yes there s Raymond Wauford Roger Fttz atrxck Mickey Bagsby Pat Crabtree joe Pryor and Judy Snellgrove Although these people have various other jobs they agreed to furnish the music tomght Oh here comes Mary Garrrson and jerry Penmngton Nlary will sing tomght jerry has written several good songs lately Who knows maybe hell be another Irving Berlm Who ever thought that Sylvia Parker and Doyle Meadows would be disc jockeys? That reminds me remember who got mtty in the semor class? Yes it was Judy Lantus and Don Rrcheson Well theyre doing a weekly show on TV They are really great By the way I saw Harold Cates on wrestling the other mght Here comes a group of distinguished looking men They re 59 graduates too jerry Galbreath who was president of our class is now president of Life and Casualty jerry Scott is also an executive at L 8a C Gerry Strother ts an important man at the Telephone Company Also m the group is jack Howlett now an accountant jack also writes a sports column for the paper Speaking of executives here comes a large group of secre tarles Our class sure furnished Nashvtlle with some top notch ones Theres Faye DeWxre Betty Latham and Barbara Dob son who are all working at the Capitol Some of the others include Gatl Tate Rebecca Burns Btllte Hamtlton Mary Mc Murtry Pat Hutchison jame Reasonover jackie johnson and Barbara Hutchison Of course many of these women are mar rled now Linda CuUman rs a private secretary at the Naval Academy and Faye Whzte is a switchboard operator Opha McPherson is a receptionist for an eminent bram surgeon Whos that gettmg out of a taxi? Why its Barbara Walker Ruth Frey and Carolyn jones They seem to be discussing something probably teaching methods The music ts stoppmg it must be time for the play to begin Here comes Maureen Wilson and Pat Grrgin Ill watt and sit with them so they can tell me about their careers in nursing Programs for tomght were furnished by Alton Bybee and Frank Preston They are rn the printing business There 15 a hush as the curtam rises The play is very mterestmg Not until the end of the second act is my attention dtverted I hear someone calling my name Why it s Ina Ingram She and Frances Smrth are professtonal models Tommne jean Carroll is fashion co ordmator at Cain Sloan Co Sitting behmd them is Carol Wtley wearing a beau uful dress probably one she designed Carol ts talkmg to Annette Cantrell and Carolyn Thomas who have become cos metologxsts I think Ill wander out mto the lobby and visit with some more of my old class mates I see a group of engineers chat ting by the door Lets see theres Emmett Snell jackte Golden lthat famous Vandy football playerj Ion Hall Mztchell Larry Galbreath jnnmy Waggener and kenneth Massey Looks like they re talkmg about old times Did I see some untforms pass by? Why yes thats Glenn Roberts and Kenneth George They are policemen They are talkmg to Iackze Calhs who IS working for the FBI Ill bet they could tell us some mterestlng case histories Dld I hear someone mention law? Theres Bzll Mott I-I seems to be debating something with Gail Car-uer and Vtrgmta Chrtstzan They are all line lawyers Ioan Sandltn is a legal secretary The house lights are going out I have to hurry back to my seat Oops pardon me I didnt mean to bump you Why hello Irum Phelan Gene Harris and Ball Flatt I hear you are all makmg a million at farming The play once agam has everyones attention Seems like I see a familiar face in the chorus line Why its Carla Dzllard Shes quite a dancer By the way the sets were done by Elnora Howell and Elizabeth Ellzthorpe They sure did a good job There is qutte a bit of tension at the climax of the play and then everyone bursts into applause as the final act is over The cast takes a bow I have to rush downstairs to help Rosalee Mzller and Arla Ruth jackson home economists with the refreshments W bought them at a Super Nlarket jointly owned by Wzllxe Mark ham Steve Hyten and Robert Ragan Everyone is invited to meet the cast and talk wlth old fnends I see several people I didn t meet before the play There is Douglas Fox chief mechanic at Hxppodrome Xfotors I heard that Porter jones and Norman Waldron were 1n the filling station business together Ronme Maggart has a motorcycle shop and Billy Wtles and Btlly Taylor run an auto repair shop Coming m the door rs Etta West Carolyn Frazter Faye Castle man and Betty Drake I see them often uptown they are all Here comes some of the married girls There is Helen Steele Patsy Ozanne and Delorese Pomeroy Wonder who is keeping their children? Oh I see Vivian Cuffman and Nancy Shockley They write a comic strap for the newspaper Wayne Kent and Paul Cole sketch ads for the paper The cast rs just commg m for refreshments Sonny says that David Tennyson was their pilot from Nlew York and the stew ardesses were none other than Faye Carter and Audrey Hunts man He also mentioned seeing Bally Harrxs at the airport Billy is an airplane mechanic Speaking of atrplanes Ive been reading about Margaret Coakley testmg Jets for the Air Force What a surprise! Lrlltan Kmsolvmg rs a soctal worker now I noticed her pic ture tn the paper just today with Ruta Norm who rs a juvemle psychologist I also saw a picture of Liz Fabrx who is an atomic scientist Something else in the evemng paper whxch made me proud vsas a picture of Margaret Leslte Evelyn Baker Madean Wllwrl Sylvxa Phxpps and Peggy Wheeler They are on a professional womens basketball team still playmg ball together They were one of the best teams Goodlettsvxlle ever had Our boys team was good in 59 too Many of the boys are still tn sports Randal McGtboney rs an athletic director at a junior college just outside of Nashville while Ray Whtte is coachmg football at jordonla Itm Hutt ts now coach of a pro football team and jam Hall rs coachmg basketball at Vandy Don Presley is gaming fame as a pro football player Also an the field of sports George Boldmg and Douglas Alsup are com petmg tn the Olympics this year It seems like almost all of our class was here tomght It was good to have our former teachers and princtpal with us too You know I remember a statement that was made about the class of 59 Several people said that it was the best class that ever graduated from Goodlettsvtlle High Im sure We have proven ourselves so Tonight we have renewed old friendships and recalled many happy hours spent at our Alma Niater Maybe those years were the best years of our lives after all Anyway were glad we spent them at Goodlettsvtlle High Page 27 ' - ' . - n . . - 1 , , . , , D . 4 ' - .
