Band l,Z,3,4,p Sunshine 1, Class g ' . . . 5 , 1 0 1 vi 1 a f ,S ' Hlstory of the Class of 1947 Tlme 9 O0 A M Place Goodland Grade School Date September 1935 Cast of Characters Txny Tots As the curtain comes up we look ln on the first grade room Miss Hogan is trymg to get all the lxttle boys and gzrls settled an seats Naturally we all wanted to get front seats and there were quite a few of us dlsappolnted But Miss Hogan flxed that Every few days we got to change seats each person mov mg up one seat and the person m the front seat golng to the last seat ln the row This way we were all happy because we all got to sat ln a front seat several txmes a year Durmg thls year we learned our letters and how to read a few short very short storxes We also learned to prmt our names Most of us were smart The fxrst year of our school lxfe rolled by and after a few weeks vacation we found ourselves back 1n school but ln the Second Grade During the course of events of our second year in school we had a sand pile ln our room Oh were we happy Another mam feature of the second grade was when some of us got parts 1n the School Operatta We were fa1r1es flowers amrnals and all sorts of funny thlngs How thrllled we were when we got dressed up for the performance We learned our numbers this year and also acquu-ed the art of wrntmg a few thmgs Even though Mlss Meade thought we were all hopeless cases the following September found us back in school and 111 the Thxrd Grade Miss LeMasters was very good to us She tried her best to teach us a few tables xn arithmetic but our tiny brains just couldn t soak up the stuff We learned how to write with pen and ink in the latter part of the year too What we enjoyed most during the thxrd grade was our parties We had a party for just about every holiday on the calendar, not to mentlon all the birthday parties we had The best party all year was in May when we all got our grade cards saymg we d been promoted to the Fourth Grade When September again rolled around we were all back in school, and in a new room with a new teacher We didn't do much this year We were reading more fluently and after a lot of practice were doing much better with our nurnbers Mxss McGraw read stories to us, and we learned to draw a few things. ll 'I ' . We knew that before we came to school. l-lxstory of the Class of 1947 Contmued In fact we deczded the fourth grade was the easxest we d had And weren t we thrilled when at the begxnmng of September 1939 we mounted the staxrs to the next floor where the fifth grade room was locoated Th1s year we accompllshed a lot Not only dxd M1ss Thompson read a lot to us but we were reading books ourselves During thxs year we gave a play Robin Hood and the Merry Woman jam Welsh played Robln Hood and Helen Wimer played the Merry Woman We all had something to do from mam part in the play to Stage Manager We thought our selves quite grown up when we gave the play which wasn t as bad as lt could have been or as bad as we thought lt would be In the sxxth grade Mxss Verrlll spent a lot of time teachxng us thmgs we ought to know when we entered hlgh school I..1ttle did we know then that the musxc room was goxng to be made lnto a jumor I-hgh assembly Were we mad when the school year 41 42 rolled around and we had to stay m the Iumor Hlgh Assembly We had one comfort though a new teacher jack Wllhams who was the boy s xdol The glrls hked hxm too Everything we dxd was planned around hxm He was assigned our class sponsor and were we happy then During the elghth grade we had a lot of fun too even 1f we were still ln the junior High As sembly We had a Star Party one mght at Mr Hart s house The purpose was study the stars We were all given a name of a star and that 1s what we answered to all evenmg Our boys got up a basket ball team thxs year and played with different teams around They were thrllled with the ndea of playmg ball especxally wlth play1ng out of town teams At last High School How long we have waited to get to sat in the Hxgh School Assembly But now we are here When the year began we had 30 students ln our class They are Lols Graham Lawrence Green L.aVerne Hartsock Carroll Heck Melvm I-loaks Ball johnson Barbara McKee Marie Muller Patricia Molter Mary O Nell Phyllis Bond Ruth Bower joe Bower Vernon Cox Ray Cudworth Robert Deno Barbara Farrell Richard Farrell Denver Flynn Donald Flynn Betty Peck ane Proud Eileen Reuter Raymond Troup Cecllxa Vogel Lois Welsh Patty Welsh james Welsh Mary jo Weiss Helen Wlmer Mr Hart fpoor man was gxven the Job of bemg our sponsor ' ll O9 c ' D ' ' 9 U I 1 . , . . , I . O 11 0 - ' H1story of the Class of 1947 Contmuedl At our flrst class meeting we elected Lois Graham as Presxdent and supportmg her we had Ruth Bower as Vxce Presldent Patncxa Molter as Secretary and Exleen Reuter as Treasurer We trred to get green hats for our class, but s1nce the war was 1n full swmg mater-1a.ls were scarce, and we dtdn t get them Everyone knew we were Freshmen anyway so we d1dn t need hats Durxng the year we had several partres mostly flops and sponsored a show Some of us were lucky enough to get prom dates durmg our fxrst year m high school and weren t we proud of ourselves ln new suxts and long dresses Our flrst long dresses too The prom brought to a close our first year nn high school and most of us had earned enough credits to be classified as a Sophomore durlng the next year Our class officers elected to serve durlng this year were Presldent Bob Deng Vice President Marie Muller, Secretary Rayrnond Troup and Treasurer This year some of our boys got down to work and made the first team in basketball How proud we were to see some of our own class playing on the first team During our second year in high school we were saddened by the death of one of our classmates LaVerne Hartsock We ordered black class sweaters thls year with a white shield on It de signed by Betty Peck Although they didn't arrive before school was out we got them in the early part of the summer We were very proud of them. and wore them constantly during the surnrner When the school year 45 46 rolled around we found ourselves classlfied as jumors During this year we gained quite a few students Barbara Farrell Betty Long Vearl Perry Lucille Woods Herman Tegtrneler and Josephine Besse We lost Denver and Donald Flynn To have an orderly class we need officers, so during our first class meet ing we elected a new group to serve us They were Presldent Bill johnson, Vice President joe Bower Secretary Ruth Bower and Treasurer jim Welsh The first thing we did was order class rings which arrived three months later We were as proud of them as we were our sweaters even though they dis appear at times Next we selected a class play and in November we began practicing for it joe Bower played the leadmg role with a supporting cast of 18 members domg their share On December 7 1945, at 8 00 P,M, the curtain went up and we dzd our stuff Although there was a flu epedurhc on at the txme we had a good crowd. - Ae it 4 - . . . , I . . . . History of the Class of 1947 Contlnuedl Next on our jumor Program we made plans for the prom The date was set for May thlrd and we hired B111 Pzrtle s Orchestra to furnish the music After so much argumg we declded on South Sea Islands for our theme for decoratlons From the ceiling we hung dozens of balloons We built palm trees and put up a lot of crepe paper At one end of the gym we put a wzshmg well Each glrl as they arrived received a wishmg rmg to be wished on at the well during the evenmg When we began our last year in high school we found we had a total of 31 students Quite a surprise that so many of us made It We had three new students Mary Ellen Lowry from Morocco, Don Denny from Evansvxlle Bosse and Bob Mxller Goodland Don and Bob are both veterans of World War Il and we are mighty proud to have them ln our graduatxng class To start off the year we elected the following officers President Ioe Bower Vice President Lois Welsh Secretary Pat Molter and Treasurer Jim Welsh On November 15 the people of our community were undoubtedly surprised when moving vans unloaded cameras at G H S Yes they were going to try to get some pictures of us The Smith Studio did the work and after breaklng a lot of cameras and spending a lot of money most of us were satisfied After the Kentland Goodland ball game we sponsored a dance We had Lowell Mead s old band from Purdue down to play We had a good crowd and made a good profit We felt more like we were going to graduate when the order for our announcements and name cards was sent ln Then when Mr Norrls ordered our diplomas and measured us for our caps and gowns we really felt like Semors On Friday March 7 we went to Indianapolis on our Semor trip We chart ered a bus and left Goodland at 6 30 A M We went to the State House visited both the Senate and the House of Representatives and saw quxte a few bills passed in both houses We went to the museum and cllmbed to the top of the Soldzer s and Sazlor s Monxunent We ate lunch in the cafeteria then went through the news paper office of the Indlanapolis News Next to the radio statxon WIBC Some of us got in on the P M Party Tlme Program It was a 45 minute program and we enjoyed It very much We sang our school song on the radio Next was a tour of the stores and at 6 00 P M we went to the Bamboo Inn for a chop suey dmner After dmner went to the lndxana Theater, and at 10 00 PM we started our journey home all of us very tired Mr Hart has our class play ordered and as soon as we fmxsh thls annual we will begin work on 1t This brings to a close the history of the class of l947 .
