She wins the school debate with an impassioned plea against drinking, but instead of attracting boys with her brains she only convinces everyone that her father must be a terrible drunkard. Despite Mother's horror at these growing wild stories about her husband she's moved by Hildegarde's fear that if she misses the prom, it's the beginning of the end--and that the final result will be a lonely old spin ster, and when the more popular girls start to lord it over Hildegarde, Mother takes action. She knows a nice boy, and she's sure he'd love to go with I-lildegarde. Hildegarde is in ecstasy at the thought and, though she doesn't know the boy's name, can t resist getting back a little at these popular girls Poor Hildegarde' How could she know that her mother would pick Freddie the one bay in school whose old fashioned parents force him to wear knickers He s a swell guy but those short pants make h1m the joke of the school ln a screammgly funny scene Hildegarde finds out the truth in front of everyone She pleads with her father to let her break the date but Father is mad for everyone is convinced now that he s a great drinker To make matters worse it develops that Hildegarde has given a little girl she was supposed to watch some envelopes to play postman wlth but the envelopes that get distributed to all the netghbors turn out to be her father s old love letters to her mother tone of them begins, Your darling green cat eyes l That settles it I-lildegarde can expect no mercy from her folks The whole school is getting ready to d1e laughing She reads an ad about Beauty Mud a substance which will work a miracle on her skin so she gets some in hopes that her fatal beauty will cause a stag line stampede Meanwhile Father in danger of losing his Job at the bank because of all the talk Hildegarde has started invxtes his boss out to the house to see for himself how sane and sensible his family really IS As Father tries to prove this I-Iildegarde her face smeared wzth beauty clay dashes into the room screaming QHer fxsherman brother has parked a large live bass in the bathtub I The boss is stunned Then his son Freddie goaded earlier by Hildegarde bursts into the room wearing long pants He s hooked them from her brother The br other rushes in after him an shortsj and cryxng Steal my pants will you? tackles Father s boss by mistake It looks like the end of every thing and they all turn on Hildegarde for one way or another she s at the bottom of every single disaster But in a laughter filled whirlwind finish the happy solution is reached We Shook The Famlly Tree 3 Act Play Comedy By Perry Clark Hildegarde who nearly turns the town upside down when she decided she no longer wants to be a wallflower Mary Jean O Reilly Sally her younger sister who aids and abets her Rose Marie Franklin Jimmy the younger brother who invents various hilarious George O Reilly Mother and father two parents with their hands more than full Joan Mehrkens and Richard Acquard Mr and Mrs Shermer who practically ruin the life of their nice son Marilyn German and James Lohman Freddie who wishes knickers had never been invented Harold Peper Ellie May and J ill two extra pretty and extra popular girls Phyllis Hilan and Elaine Shelstad Paige a mischief making little girl who eats a tube of toothpaste Mary Lou Majerus 41 I ' I . 4' - . as Bobby, the older brother: who has a passion for fishing. . . . . . . . . . . . .
