Our ship, the USS Goodhue PA 1075, named after the Minne- sota county bearing the IILIIHC of the publisher of the state s hrst newspaper, was built in San Francisco by the Western Pipe and Steel Company and commissioned on November 11. 1044. After shakedown, amphibious training and Christmas at San Pedro and San Diego, we set out for Manus Island in the Admiral- ties, crossing the equator and initiating the lowly pollywogs into the mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep-making them trusted shellbacks. XVe transported easuals from Mantis, via Hollandia, to Leyte. lleing designated flagship of Transport Division 51, we embarkcd and trained elements of the jjth Army Division for the Kerama lletto-Okinawa operation. llaving participated in the taking of Kerama Retto, we were standing by with reserves for Okinawa when we were attacked by a llight of Nips, three of whom our gunners shot down. But the third suicitled into our ship, hitting one of the masts and exploding in mid-air over the after decks and gun positions Material damage was light, but casualties, both killed and wounded, were heavy. On l.-Day plus sixteen, we put ashore the assault troops on le Shimag and it was the Goodhue's ensign which lluttered over the island when the operation was completed. XfVe had thirty-two days and eighty-two air raids at Okinawa, then we landed our reserve troops and retired to Ulithi, whence we returned to San Francisco. After minor repairs for the ship and very short leaves for ollicers and men, we embarked two battalions of Army lingineers and stood out for the Philippines, calling enroute at lrlonolulu, Eni- wetok and Ulithi. Discharging the engineers at Manila, we entered a program of amphibious refresher training in Lingayen Gulf, with elements of the 35rd Army Division. In the course of these exercises peace came and the operation was discontinued. VVe lifted the Americal Division at Cebu and transported them to Yokohama to participate in the occupation of Iapan. From there we returned to Manila with a load of Recovered Allied Military Personnel-released prisoners of the laps. A scheduled second trip to 'Nippon was cancelled while we lay at Cebug and we returned to Manila to embark naval dischargees for transportation to San Francisco, and were diverted to San Pedro. 'lihough there is extra duty in the ioh, there is nevertheless a distinction in heing a tlagship. The Cioodhue has earned that distinc- tion. lt has heen thc hest ofthe five fiagships that have flown my pennant in this war. lt's a small world and the hond of shipmates will luring many meetings. VVherever you may wind up-whatever your part in our way of life, you will he renienihered as a fine cross-section of America-solid citizens who hecanie real fighting men. Good luck to you.
