Within their schools these students join together in work and play, their teamwork brings glory to themselves and their school. As the graduating seniors leave to take their knowledge and skills out into the community, nation, and the world, the incoming freshmen join in the activities of the school. Our school may be small, but it is a part of America, and its students are a part of the great American team which makes our country such a wonderful place in which to live. Come with us as we bring you a panorama of the teamwork within Gonzales Union High School. LAWRENCE BOSIO ,. ,lay I :H ,Qs W Gp Y.. IO, l952, the class of 53 entered the portals of Gonzales Union High School as mighty seniors. The forty-six seniors did extremely well this year under the leadership ot their Class President, Lupe Correa, Vice President, lnes Rubbo, Secretary, Wilma Macklin, Treasurer, Betty Redtern and Frank Vanoli as Sergeant-at-arms. Ines Rubho A big undertaking was the putting on of the Senior Play, V'Ce'P'eS'dem Glamour Boy, which was directed by Miss South and proved to be a big success both dramatically and financially. The Seniors made up nearly one half of the l-lonor Society this year, with ten members, Don Boysen, Charles Lanini, Joel Rodriguez, Marlene Ambrosini, Shirley Bales, Lorraine Corda, Shirley Gnesa, Evelyn McCabe, Wilma Macklin and Bernette Wimer, Many students also honored the class by participating in l-lonor Wilma Macklin Band, chorus, ,orchestra and in all sports during the year, On May l3, Secretary l953, the Seniors were royally entertained by the Juniors at a lovely banquet, which was followed by dancing. The annual Senior Ditch Day was held during the last part at the year and also the Annual Senior Ball, given in the school gym, was a joyous affair. As this school year comes to an end the seniors venture forth into other schools ot learning, to careers, or to homes of their own. The days at Gonzales l-ligh will always be remembered and will grow as treasured memories as time goes on. Betty Redf rn , Treasurer e by Norman Braga and Joel Rodriguez wziofc Ufass Under the excellent leadership of Gary Stubblefield, President, Josephine Hook, Vice President, Nancy Lee, Secretary, Ruth Barn- well, Treasurer, and Amado Saenz, Sergeant-at-Arms, the Junior Class proved their ability as upper-classmen. Our financial status was greatly helped when we sold hot dogs, cakes, coffee, candy, and gum at the football and basketball games under the care of 4June Brooks, Jean Skanse, and Charlene Morris. Our class rings were ordered as soon as possible, and we received them in December. At the Homecoming Game Josephine Hook reigned as Queen and Joan Hook her assistant. At the games, Patsy Pura led the band as head majorette with Nancy Lee and Lavella Dionne assistant maiorettes. Joan Stockdale and Eugene McRae rallied our school spirit as assistant yell leaders and Doyleen Hooks led the pom pom girls in their first appearance. Jim Kosinski was placed on the mythical All C.C.A.L. and led the B-Section basketball teams in scoring. Patsy Pura was our Queen at the Barn Dance. Dena Shanks and Ruth Barnwell represented us in the Honor Society. Ruth Barnwell won the Lion's Student Speakers Contest in Gonzales. Dena Shanks was chosen to go to Girls' State and David Gularte and Gary Stubblefield were chosen for Boys' State. The Junior Carnival proved very prosperous and the Junior Senior Banquet at Mission Ranch was enjoyed by all. We wish to thank our advisors, Mr. Woodruff, Miss Fossel, Mrs. Bassi, and Mr. Harper. We got underway under the leadership of Bill Macklin, Presi- dent, Alfred Bosio, Vice President, Frances Ambrosini, Secretary, Rodrigo Castillo, Treasurer, and Leandro Perez, Sergeant-at-arms. During the fall many of our boys playedkon both Varsity and Junior Varsity football teams, After the successful Freshman Return Party Alfred Bosio Vice President came Christmas vacation, the semester, and exciting basketball sea- son, We were especially proud of Rodrigo Castillo, high scorer in the B League lightweight division. Other sophomore boys on that team were Rudy Yniguez, Robert Celaya, and Jessie Dominguez, who all played outstanding games. The Class elected Norma Pedevilla as Barn Dance Queen Candidate and sent Sondra Gronningen, Vernon l-levrin, Carolyn Murray, and Beverly Nielsen to l-lonor Band, and Paulette Antrim, Ann Lopes, and Sammy Grijalva to Honor Chorus. Frances Ambrosini S Y The Honor Society claimed Sondra Gronningen, Irma De Pratti, ecre ary Dolores Caprara, and Melva Griffin, while many other Sophomore girls joined the Block The class accomplished things such as voting on a standard school ring and raised money on dances and the Talent Show. ln all these there was the guidance of our advisors, Miss Rodgers, Mr, Titus, Mrs, Lovett, and Mr. Cahaon, whom we wish to thank sincerely, The '52-'53 year wound up on June twelfth, graduation, and the Class of '55 found themselves looking ahead to the year as Juniors, and another happy, fun-filled time at G.U.l-l,S. Avfzcvzfan cl-fi-fifs The members of the journalism class have had times when the Thursday dead-line was hard to meet, but all in all, they have presented the student body with an informative and interesting paper. At the beginning of the year, the members so'd ads and subscriptions to help with the expense involved in running a school newspaper. The average paper costs about 54500. This year's Spartan l-li-Life has featured pictures in every issue, a practice which has added in- terest and enjoyment to those reading its Other weekly attractions were, the boy of the week, the girl of the week, and the teacher of the week, The Sartan Hi-Life had excellent coverage on Gonzales basketball and football games. The readers of the features will remember the enjoyment they gained by reading The Snoops and Snickers and The Spartin' Spartans. For the first time in many years, the paper had signed articles, in which a reporter expressed his views on certain matters. The members of the journalism staff are indebted to Miss South for her tireless work in helping publish the newspaper, Mr, and Mrs. Jacobsen of the Soledad Bee can't be thanked enough for the wonderful co-operation they have given in publishing the paper. A trophy was given to the most athletic ot the Senior. girls. This girl was chosen by her fellow members, The girls in the organization enjoyed two playdays this year The host schools were Watsonville and Monterey. A new system will be initiated into the school next year. This system will be known as the G. A, A. or the Girls' Athletic Association. Next year, and through the following years, the Girls' Block G will be an exclusive club tor those girls who have 375 points or over, Congratulations to this outstanding organization which has proved itself to be superior in all events and activities. . The Boys' Block G is an organization not tor the purpose ot wearing a sweater or being a hero. Rather, it is a club composed of many boys who work together as a team, not only on the field of glory but in school matters also, They try to encourage the lower classemen to try out for vari- ous sports and to take part in all school activities. This is the basis ot our Block G This year we started to work on this idea. At first it seemed to be a long way from being true. But after a few adjustments we began to roll and we soon found out what team meant. ' On a new idea we passed a law through the Student Council to have blocks awarded to those seniors who try out for the team and iust don't get enough points to be awarded a block. We held various basketball tournaments and track meets tor the various elementary schools in our valley to promote the better sportsmanship among them. As a new activity this year we got together with the girls' Block G and held a boys and girls basketball game using girls rules. This proved to be a very amusing and interesting game, enjoyed by all the students. --Lawrence Bosio Oysfefoai James Kosinski Secretory Treasurer Tony Vasquez Larry Truman President Vice-President Shirley Bales Secretary Sally Cowon President Annie Daoro Vice-President Shirley Gnesa Treasurer gizfa f fm ue The Girls' League, under the guidance of Sally Cowan, President, and the able help ot Miss Barbara Johnson, advisor, has had a prosperous year One of the outstanding events chalked up to this organization was the annual Mother- Daughter banquet, which was held at the l-ligh School gyrn in the Fall. At the football games and at parodes you could always see our five majorettes leading the bond. They were alwoys there, although it was cold at times, If you have ever watched them in action you would say that they made every effort to add spirit to the occosion. This is the last year for our senior majorette, Florene May, but Patsy Pura, Lavella Dionne, Nancy Lee, and Yvonne Boysen will be with us next year. We are especially proud of this organization and hope that it keeps up the fine work in the Coming years. The memories for the year are many, highlighted byi the all-star girls' football team, the girls' basketball game played against members of the Boys' Block G , the new game of speed-a way which is as near as we can get to football, the individual sports program introducing badmin- ton, archery, and tennis. Softball season is now upon us and the intramural softball games will give us much to talk about. With Annie Daoro holding the reins and with the cooperation of her cabinet and the members, the Girls' Block G organization had an outstanding year. The girls showed enthusiasm and interest. Therefore, partici- pation was strong for the year round activities. All this contributed to the wonderous success of the year i952-53. lt was my pleasure to work with the girls in the Block G program and the every day sports program.
