IIDIIIIIIISTRIITIDII The chief instrument of American democracy is the public school system, functioning as a training center for the national leaders of tomorrow. The Amer- ican citizen, a product of the public schools, has met well the crises of two world Wars and has avoided any national disaster through periods of depression and prosperity. Public education is now challenged with its task of training citizens capable of achieving World peace if this nation or any nation is to survive the atomic age. Education faces the ever-continuing task of bringing the American people closer to the full realization of the aims of our Democracy, a realization of the privilege of freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom to worship. Education accepts the challenge with confidence, as years of experience have proven that education is effective and can accomplish its purpose, if aims and objects are clearly defined and a definite goal is established.
