The system of planning of the buildings of the local school has been kept uniform yet modern in construction since the forma- tion of a unit of learning. The equipment in the buildings has been maintained at best in all departments to afford the students all of the necessary advantages for vocational guidance. Yet, even with the best of these, the instructors of the students hold the greatest responsibility. Their selection has been made accord- ing to the maximum educational qualifications available for their respective duties. With these to form the fundamentals of an institution of learn- ing, the student can be offered every preparation for the respon- sibilities of American citizenship. FRANK S. CORDA. cc 10 an 1 ff . ELEVENTI-I YEAR STUDENTS The successful career of the Class of '39 has been brought to a close. The class has been outstanding for its interest and spirit in all Worthwhile affairs during its past three years in school. To us, as upperclassrnen, falls the responsibility of seeing that the school traditions are upheld in the following year to come. The lunior jarnboree and dance were our social activities of the year, and proved to be a great success. The lunior class was well represented in athletics and scholarship through-f out the year. aloe -Gulp' SKY: , 'Er ..- Top: Harold While, Walter Buckley, James Okamoto, Tom Nomura, Jackie Franscioni, Ernest Corda, Fulvio Brazzi, Robert Scearcy. Even now we are looking forward to graduation, and hope to enter a uni- versity, or secure a good position. Our big eyent of the year was the Freshmen initiation-and what a success. The Sophomore boys played a great part in football and basketball, and the girls attained membership in the Honor Society. xl7:: Top: Louie Nunes, Arnold Morisoli, Clarence Vosti, Leo Bigiogni, Reno Breschini, Harry Rhodes, Paul Bassi, Morris Cassinelli, Robert Bernard, Center: Frank Cotta, Wallace Cassatt, Dick Baumann, Mary Walker, l-laroldene Vaughan, Genera Figueroa, Donald Bontadelli, Tatsuo Matsuda. How mysterious it all was at first. We remember distinctly the pityina glances We received from the Seniors as they tiled into the gym. Now at the end of our Freshman year, we look forward to our own Dumb Frosh to tease and we hope we can do as much for them as the Sophs did for us this year. - 44182 THE GYM As every Wheel has its hub, so our gym each year is the center of all school activities. From athletic contests to dances, movies and dramatics the gym lends its silent support to student functions and acts as a clearing house and outlet for youthful enthusiasm. 44192 I-XCTIVITI Z:+1lE'l 1 A 11. 1. -1 -1 . 1 3 1.1. Students earning membership in this organization are awarded a novitiate pin, which they may keep if they have been members for six semesters. These six semester members automatically become life members and on graduating they are given a life membership pin and the Chapter Seal is embossed upon their diplomas. The club is one of the most active in the school. The members not only enjoy the semi-annual initiations but many other interesting things. Money was raised by food sales and movies. The club also sponsors singing assemblies which are very popular with the Student Body. s a26x nl GIRLS LEAGU Ardene Eckford T ease Zan Pairrcna Bmsacca Lols Pura L ence Howe!! FOOTBALL Another light but scrappy football squad represented the Spartans this season. Playing all home games at night the boys never failed to put on an interesting game, and the huge crowds set a new record in attendance. No outstanding man can be singled out on the tearn. At ends, Harry Poirier and Bill Bondiette played strong games, stopping most plays coming their way. Tackle positions were ably handled by Ken Fredson and Donald Osborne. At guards, Gene Bisi and Floyd Wilkerson opened up holes tor the backs, and cou- pled With Art Brazzi at center, formed a strong combination. In the backfield, George Cramer again played outstanding ball at quarter- back. Henry Corda, just beginning to find himself at full, really started bowling down opponents toward the season's close. Haltbacks carrying most of the load were Bob Baurnann, Iirn Menetrey, Babe Bondiette and Archie Harnpton. Losses this season by graduation will be heavy and the task of building next year's team depends on those who saw little action this year. 1540 cc nr-w 1 . McLEISH COACI-l'S MESSAGE The theme of a Coach's Message is usually based on thoughts which are up- permost in his mind at the time of writing, and therefore differs with changing school generations. Perhaps you present students would be interested in knowing some of the impressions you create. On the whole you are a young group compared with some who have preceded you and your attitude is therefore an enthusiastic one. Your lack of knowledge and ability find compensation in high spirit and Willing- ness to work. You are unspoiled by any mistaken opinion of superiority and your participation in sports is spontaneous. Any success you have had has not caused you to take on a veneer of boredom to cover up conceit. You realize your limita- tions and instead of letting present successes give you complete satisfaction, you seek greater perfection in your abilities. Many of you who have attained athletic fame while still underclassmen, are carrying your popularity well. You have not mistaken it for superiority. ln short, you make a good impression. But remember, impressions can change quickly. Take special note of the impression you now create, and swear that it will be the same on the day your high school career is over. 44412 -I .4 Va: .3 VK UPPER GROUP Back row: Floyd Wilkerson Archie Hampfon Gene Sanderson Alan Sommer Anker Fanoe Fronf row: George Cramer Alfred Binsacca Arthur Brazzi Harry Poirier Left: David Perez Riqhf: Henry Corda LOWER GROUP Back row: Vernon Hiserman Babe Bondiefre Adolph Brusa George Oriarre Dick Baumann From' row: Leo Cassina Gene Bisi David Perez Earl Cassah' Bob Boekenooqen BASKETBALL From the standpoint of crowds, interest, and good basketball games, Gonzales enjoyed this year one of its most successful seasons. LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL. The loss of only three games out of ten played, landed the lightweights in second place in league standing. After a slow start, in which they lost two games, the team won consistently for the remainder of the season, losing only one other game, an overtime affair to Watsonville. George Oriarte and David Perez were the mainstays of the squad, the former with his consistent scoring, and Perez with his steadying influence in directing the team as Captain. Bob Boekenoogen played an excellent game at guard, and was well matched by Vernon Hiserman as a running mate. Dick Baumann showed promise for a freshman and Leo Cassina was put into the game at any time without weakening it in any way. After a late start Clarence Bondiette played some good games, although his lack of practice kept him from attaining his best form. HEAVYWEIGHT BASKETBALL. The calibre of play in the heavyweight di- vision this season in our league was not up to past standards, and our own squad enjoyed little success from the standpoint of victories. Built around graduates from last year's limited team, the heavies did not have sufficient speed, ability or accuracy to compete with most opponents, and while many of their games were by close scores, they could not muster quite enough drive to come out on top. Henry Corda was the most consistent performer and did more than his share of scoring from his guard position. Arthur Brazzi teamed with him at guard, as did Harry Poirier. Archie Hampton, when on his game played good ball, and Alan Sommer did some good scoring when given the opportunity. George Cramer and Anker Fanoe at forwards, while not high scorers, were good floor men. Whatever their success may have been, one thing must be said of the heavies -They were a bunch that worked together and enjoyed playing the game despite the score. 44 432 , , V I - ' 2111 ' V I , 1 I T P Q. - It 1 f 1 --x iii - 1 'Ii Bob Dennis 4. A six-team league playing a twelve-game schedule found about fifty fellows engaging in one or two games per week for two months. The most gratifying feature of the season was the fact that, although every squad played to win, both the winning teams and the tail-enders enjoyed even more, the actual playing for the fun ol the game. e452 Lu Arnold Morisoli Henry Corda Richard Handley George Cramer Harry Poirier Arthur Brazzi Clarence Vosti Jin-I Menetrey Harvey Asmusscn Joe Simonetti Gene Bisi Fulvio Brazzi David Perez ls fa BASEBALL This spring marked the resumption of Spartan baseball after a two-year period. At the time this is written, the squad is slowly shaping into a very representa- tive team, good at bat and fairly strong defensively. George Cramer, Archie Hampton and Arnold Morisoli hold down the pitching assignment, with Henry Corda doing the catching. A snappy infield with lots oi fire makes a good ball club. Floyd Wilkerson at first, Clarence Vosti at second, David Perez at short and Harvey Asmussen at third, promise much as a supporting cast for their battery. A good sluggging outfield will undoubtedly develop from candidates such as Art Brazzi, lim lvlenetrey, Fulvio Brazzi and Gene Bisi. c4659 Ernest Corda George Oriarte Herman Machado Jack Moffitt Henry Corda Archie -Hampton Bill Bontadelli George Cramer Bob Baumann Eddie Tonini TRACK Gonzales always seems to boast of a few track men who become outstanding in their event. This season finds George Oriarte proving to be the outstanding performer. His distances in the shot and broad jump stand him as a record breaker. Archie Hampton follows his brother's footsteps in the distance events. In the same type of running, lack Moffitt, although just a Frosh, shows great prom- ise as a future point winner. Eddie Tonini, Hank Corda and Ernest Corda again hold down the sprint events with George Cramer making a strong bid for success in the shot discus. Our most successful day will be the C. C. A. L. meet, when a few good men can score many points and a balanced team with men in every event are not needed to make a showing. cc 47 2 COACI-l'S MESSAGE MISS MELVA HATTAN Girls' Coach After four years of high school training, evidences of increased mental, physical and social development of every girl should be apparent. The physical education program is one of the means through which this development may be ac- complished. Active participation in this program should give a girl greater resources for spending her leisure timef a better knowledge of the factors that influence health and a greater appreciation of the benefits of good health, a better understanding of people and greater ability to get along with people. lt should increase her ability to conduct herself nat- urally in difficult situations, to guide herself and solve her own problems. e489 Wll.MA WHITE Girls' Athletic Manaq I A . . 2 ' T tg., ff 1, A 1' - 1 gn. Because the State Department permits no interscholastic competition in girls' sports, there was much enthusiasm in the interclass games and there was a good show of sportsmanship during all the contests. In April most all the girls attended Girls' Play Day, at Santa Cruz, representing the Gonzales Union High School. The girls oi the Gonzales Union High School competed in six consecutive sports this year, namely, hockey, baseball, basketball, volleyball, speedball and track. Every member oi the girls' gym classes had an opportunity to make these teams, which were chosen by Miss Hattan. The girls displayed keen competition i laces on the championship plaques. during interclass games or p 44 50 2 4 1 9. N in 3- 1 1 r A' e ' 3, . Softball was played instead of baseball due to the increasing interest in this sport. Those who did not Wish to compete in track were allowed to play tennis during the last school quarter. Nineteen thirty-eight marks the second year speed- ball and track were included in girls' physical education for Gonzales. Girls' athletics tends to increase the interest in physical education and to pre- sent the girls with a more complete understanding of sportsmanship. The inter- class games greatly assist them in grasping these factors and seeing their full significance. G 52 :J K S X 1 qi., , dx l -5.
