Jim cspmfm THE YEAR BooK OF GONZALES UNION HIGH SCHOOL Published by THE CLASS OF 1937 in its Senior Year Q. . To Mr. Leon D, Lilley, the students' choice for Principal, at the end ot his first year as Principal of the Gonzales l-ligh School during which time he has earned our respect, admiration, and friendship through tair play, understanding and co-operation, we dedicate this Spartan Annual. aj 3 md We are America's future. The written evidence of our efforts at making it a glorious future is embodied in this Spartan Annual. ln pictures of us and our lives it is seen what is being done in today's High Schools to make us the ideal of generations. ln the memory of its passing youth the Class of i937 submits this complete picture of the Gonzales Union High School as we see it. ,A!!!,,,s ,S eses - -fa --V-aff- 1 'Jr - Because our lives depend on it and because it's gorgeous if you see it from the right angle, we choose the Salinas River, temperamental -subterranean stream, as the th f h' eme o t is year book. The strange rush of its unseen, unheard waters down to the restless Monterey Bay is somehow symbolic of lives begun in a small town, such as Gonzales. ,f THE PEOPLE n THE LEADERS rr SPARTANS IN SPORTS THE LTFE Jim Pmpla, ,,,,.1 ' 1' , X , ggi' ' X I QW, Q .1-' wx '. 'lv 5 MR. LlLLEY MR. MCLEISH PRINCIPAl'S MESSAGE Enrollment during this past year has been the largest in the history of the school. This increased enrollment is gratifying to those engaged in the field of education. lt is an indication that young people are beginning to realize that many years must be spent in preparation for life as an individual in this com- plex modern society. An education in this age of science is much more vital than during the period of our forefathers. Life's problems are more complex, competition in industry is keener, and oppor- tunities for sustenance are lessened. More time is provided for leisure and individuals have to be trained for the proper use of idle time. The great problem in school work is to determine what changes or adjustments in the educational program are necessary to meet the demands of society, and how best to make these adjustments within the school program. Accomplishments must be preceded by preparation. l-low you use today will determine how tomorrow will use you, X M. HATTAN H. HILL i l R. FORCE W. SECREST E. BOUGHER E. PITMAN A. DIAS K. ABBOTT B. HOBRECHT E. ALCORN HBR it Senior Class ol 1931 We are very big frogs in a very small puddle, but we make just as big a splash and do the same things as anybody any place. We are the best Gonzales has ever had. We've done great things in our past. The play was an achievement, the sports would've been helpless without us, and the clubs would've lacked life without the magic of our presence. Piini and Hampton are our star athletes, Piini having won a sweater for four years on first string football, and Hampton having won medals for running in many track meets. Most ot the girls, we are proud to say, wear Block G's , and are really brainy, too. When we start to do things where the world can see us we will do things that will make the people of our past proud. We are going to be happy. From the very beginning we've broken records and set the pace. Not only do we make up over half the Honor Society, but we comprise the first string of many athletic teams. We point to our Block bearing boys and girls as proof of our athletic prowess. Our play Charm School was a marvelous success, and showed what Hi talent could pro- duce. Those who had the good fortune of seeing this play will no doubt agree that it is one of the best ever presented in this school, and one hard to beat. lts successful presentation showed that we have among our ranks some really talented actors and actresses. Also from our class come the Presi- dents of the Honor Society, Girls' Block G Club, and of both the Girls' and Boys' Archery Clubs. This is sufficient proof to show that we take great interest in school activities, and that we are eager and willing to do our part in making this school bigger and better than it has ever been. We are also proud to say that a girl from our class has been chosen to represent our school in the Salinas Rodeo this year which we consider quite an honor for her and for our class. Next year when we rule the school, we will go on record as having accomplished more than any Senior Class. We've got what it takes to bring the school out of the rut. Our Senior play will be a marvel, our athletic record spotless, and our scholarship standards higher than ever before. We can do big things. Watch us! .IUNl0RS . , , SOPHOMORES President . . The COMET is published weekly, keeps up a lively inter- est in school activities and reflects all types of personalities and projects. The COMET staff is kept busy, for it turns in stories for weekly school columns in three county papers. CHORUS 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 GIRLS' Bl0CK G The busiest club in school is an athletic club for girls with a select membership known as the Block G Club. ln order to belong to the club, the aspirant must prove herself an athlete and a scholar by earning l25 points in sports and scholarship. The awards are e presented at a reunion banquet held annually. Every girl in the school has an equal chance to make A and B teams in the following sports-hockey, basket- ball, field ball, volley ball and baseball. The girls on the championship teams have the distinc- tion of having their names on the coveted plaques. Money making is the chief problem but the girls solved it by selling candy at games and noon hours. The money is used for a page in the Spartan and for various social functions. This play was delightful and will stand unapproached as a new high in Hi comedy and dramatics. CHARM SCHOOL .Spnntan Spmu, ftifgi s r 1 l i OUR CHEER LEADERS Gloria Juri and Eddie Tonini Boys' Athletics for the past year enjoyed the same success which has marked previous seasons. Improvements in equipment ushered night football into the community and interest in the sport increased greatly as a result. The biggest tribute all Spartan teams can pay to school authorities is their appreciation for the excellent manner in which our athletes are outfitted in facilities, wearing apparel, and all necessary items which go to make up a successful squad. I--A V ,, . FROM THE COACH The athletic advantages for a boy in a small school are so great and compare so favorably with those in larger institutions that they warrant consideration. Competition for positions on teams is less keen. More boys of average ability gain athletic experience. 'WO .,', Pill The smaller boy has a chance where beet is not at such a premiumq Every member of a squad is an individual and not just another candidate for a positiong there is little danger ot his being lost in the shuttle. A high school boy needs more coaching than an older youth. He must be taught how to do things correctly. Where but in a small school can he get the advantages of individual help, personal interest and better development. Add to the above one more item. A youth comes to know every other youth intimately and as a companion. By knowing others he can better judge himself. Yes, the small school need make no apologies. n . , . ' . , , .. A . Top row. This year's gridiron season was a pleasant surprise in many ways. Prospects early in the year were none too bright, with a green and inexperienced squad to build from. Such men as Joe Piini, Walter Hayes, Jesus Mangrobang, George Cramer and a few others were the nucleus around which the team was built. The manner in which new men developed was most gratifying, and within a few weeks another fighting Spartan team was on its way. The only loss suffered was to the strong Gilroy team. The scoreless battle with Pacific Grove in driving rain proved a new experience to all the players, while the final game of the season against the Alumni proved the high spot of the season. Losses by graduation lett only Joe Piini from last year's squad and the new men could never seem to develop any scoring punch, although defensively, their game was good. Lack of any good shots kept our scores down, and inability to handle the ball well kept the team from working for good scoring opportunities. Bill Bauman and Ed Rucker handled the forward positions well, with Argal Hampton at center, Joe Piini and George Cramer proved the best guard combination. The team as a whole was always in the game doing its best and proving a worthy representative of the Orange and Black. E. Breschini, A. Binsacca, A. Hampton, G. Cramer, B. Bauman, E. Rucker, J. Bondietti Limited basketball proved somewhat like football this year, in being a slow starter. Freshmen had to learn the game and fill most of the positions, the result being a disappointing start but a very successful finish. With Joe Franscioni and Archie Hampton only veterans on the squad, such Freshmen as Henry Corda, David Perez and Bob Boekenoogen were soon filling the other positions, with Clarence Bondietti also playing an important role at forward. Lacking height as a team, the squad had to use a short passing game to work the ball in for short shots. Franscioni proved as adept at dribbling as he was last year. LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL SFU? Every boy in school had an opportunity to play, and judging from the interest shown by even the tail-end clubs, this activity is one ot our most worthwhile ventures in High School Athletics. w I. With a few outstanding performers the Spartans had another season dotted with indi- vidual triumphs in Invitational Meets and in League competition. Our outstanding distance man, Argal Hampton, fulfilled early season predictions by never failing to break the tape in his events and his brother Archie proved himself the best lightweight discus man we have ever had. Other men who did well in track and field were: Henry Corda and George Cramer in weight events. The former showed his class in the shot, while the latter bids fair to become our future discus champ. Bill Bontadelli as a freshman shows promise as a future distance man. Eddie Tonini will be our speed flash next year. Each season the Spartans add to their ever growing list of records in the CCAL lBl Meet. We now hold all sprint records in both limited and unlimited divisions. This year were added records in the varsity distance events and lightweight field events. TRACK GIRLS Ill SPORTS Under the supervision of Miss Hattan, Girls' Physical Educa- tion instructor, girls in sports had a swell year because interclass rivalry was so keen. Because the state department permits no interscholastic competition the girls put all of their energy into very exciting intramural games which were played at noon with the whole Student Body in the cheering section. a This year there has been more interest taken in tennis than in previous years, with several girls developing into championship material. In May over halt the feminine population of the campus attended girls' Play Day, representing GUHS at Santa Cruz. Jessie Roddick was appointed Girls' Athletic Manager at the beginning of the term, and has done a fine job of fighting for our rights in cabinet meetings.
