For the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the 1980-81 basketball sea- son proved to be successful, but at the same time, bittersweet. The 19 wins posted by Dan Fitzgerald's squad was more than any Bulldog quintet had man- aged since Hank Anderson's 1966-67 team went 21-6. The surprisingly successful season was the third con- secutive winning year for the Bulldogs, once again something that had not been done for a long time on the Boone Avenue campus. But despite being in the thick of the race for the league title down to the last game, a final night loss to the Portland Pilots, and the NIT bid that never was, left a bitter taste in the mouths of all concerned with Gonzaga basketball. But what cannot be overlooked, is the fact that the 1980-81 Bulldogs were a very fine college team. Coach's comments: This has been the greatest team I have been associated with. They have done everyth- ing we have asked, they have played hard all year long. The four seniors have been just great. They are responsible for our success. Looking at the season in review, the highlights had to be winning the Champion Holiday Classic in Mon- tana, and the big win in Kennedy Pavilion over the USF Dons. Even the early season loss to the DePaul team stands out, as the Bulldogs proved to themselves they could play with the best. So now the 1980-81 season is in the books, as in the Dan Fitzgerald era. Fitz closed with a fine mark, 51-29, in his three years of guiding the Bulldogs. His animat- ed antics, and his burning desire to win will be missed by all Bulldog followers. si?
