The des- olate, 320-acre tract cost him 5936 in silver dollars. Spokane was a settle- ment surrounded by Indian country, the founding Jesuits of Gonzaga es- tablished a mission school to educate the natives. Now, in 1981, a hundred years later, a lot of Spokane river-water has flowed under the bridge and away down the falls. Spokane is a growing city of 180,000 people, Gonzaga is a modern campus alive with the busi- ness of the present. But as the year- 7 book records the present, it creates the past, paints historical pictures that we will recall, years hence. And thus my purpose in combining the historical Gonzaga with the G.U. of today is to show that it, as are so many facets of our life, is in process. We enable it to progress. We record the smiles, the sunsets, the scenery that merit remembrance. We criti- cize the faults we see and present an ideal to be strived for. We pray that we spring from this school, green shoots from an old stump, intelligent and good men and women, to spread Gonzaga's Christian influence throughout the world..-Mimi Brady Above: an old etching showing the original college building from Lake Arthur Qnamed much later after Father Art Dussaultj. The college was founded in 18877 its name was taken from the family of St. Aloysius, the patron of youth. This building was built in 1889, and in 1900 was hoisted up on rollers and moved by horses back near the present lesuit House so that the new building could be erected.
