It is also a many shadowed thing. For the process of liberation is like a war. The enemies of wisdom stand as so many sentries blocking the avenues to light--weakness, ennetvation, confu- sion before multiple goals. lt is hard to elude dark- ness if it is all that you have known. The struggle to become learned, to become good, to build into oneself ideals which will pull one up when inertia pulls one down, goes on end- lessly here at Gonzaga. For all the toil that a son- net or thermodynamics may demand in order to master a skill there remains the even more pro- foundly human difficulties which have to be grap- pled with at the age of twenty. For in one's own room in Dooley House or Crimont or Chadin, the bivouac goes on, the soli- tary confrontation about what one is going to do and be. The aim of the university is magisterial. The teacher does not abdicate the chair. With all due assent before the value of inquiry, his job is also transmission, the laying bare of thought, the done and the said, even the speculations as to what might have been. Gonzaga likes to feel that she provides the milieu in which the young grow, the aegis under which mature judgments take place, the warm and hallowed spot, a point in place and time from which great men and women will emerge. You are the great men and women. John P. Leary, S.J. President
