Cllldlllllillillkg To be sure of an excellent spirited year, the cheerleaders spent a week of intensive cheering at a national cheerleading clinic held in Portland. Oregon. The Cheerleaders came back with a totally new concept in cheerleading and all were prepared for a full year of cheering. This year, the cheerleaders brought some new dimensions to their office. Some of the new ideas involved starting an all boys Pep Club and raffling off the cheerleaders and cheerboys for an evening out. Although, all the cheerleaders agreed that cheering for a winning team was great, there was quite a lot of work to do behind the scenes. After practicing all week long, the real work began. Before every game, signs had to be made and pep cons prepared. lfrom left to rightl Debbie and Greg strike a nostalgic pose. ls this how you decorate the halls? The Pups continued this show of power through the season, with the excellent quarterbacking of Nate Swagel and Steve Cronin aided by the fantastic running of backs, Tim Lappano and Joe Hare plus the great kicking efforts of Tom Hodl and Brian Moreland. The Bullpups continued their winning streak with a 28-7 victory over the North Central lndians. The following week spirits ran high when the Bullpups trounced Shadle Park 62-14. Lewis and Clark was the Pups next opponent and the outlook was rdoubtful as to whether or not the Bullpups could defeat LC, for our opponents were undefeated. In his three years here at Prep Mr. Long, the head coach of the Freshman football team, has produced three champoinship teams. The Freshman team established a 4-1 season record with their only loss to North Central l8-6l. The offense of the Frosh team scored an amazing 59 points while the powerful Bullpup defense gave up only 22 points. Frosh standouts included Joe Feist, H.T. Spirit day was similar to years past however the Pep con this year set new precedents in spirit week tradition. Some five hundred seventh and eight graders, along with the Marycliff, HolyNames and Gonzaga Prep student bodies attended this year's spirit day pep con. Included in this day of mass hysteria and pandemonium were contests in pie eating and bike racing and human pyramid building. Capping this illustrious day off was a pep con with Barney Cantrell, the satirized disc jockey who after insulting our school and football team, barely escaped with his life. The new features this year were the inclusion of girls at the con and in the pyramid and pie eating contests. The basketball cheerboys added acrobatics to their wide and varied repertoire of cheering skills. In order to produce revenue, the innovative cheerleaders staged a 50's dance at Holy Names. Two local disc jockeys, Bruce Cannon and Bruce Murdock, served as emcees. Dance contests and free refreshments highlighted the evening. The duties of the cheerleaders, in addition to attending home games, consisted of cheering at road games, special acrobatic stunts, and devising new cheers. The Glee Club presented in conjunction with Eastern Washington State's Symphonic and Chamber choirs, a presentation at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Cathedral. Highlighting the program was Gabrieli's Gloria, a rarely performed sixteen voice work. 'J IIDANQIES This year the dance committee has continued their outstanding performance at the dances: taking peopIe's money. supplying them with pizza and coke. and keeping order. Once again along with weekly dances, the dance committee decided to throw a big concert at the Coliseum. lFlare Earth, R.E.O., Speed Wagon, and One Shot Deall. But in a show of humility. the Dance Committee did not want it known that they were sponsoring the concert, so they went by A.M.D.G. Much credit must be given to the Green Machine, especially Frank Ross who sacrificed many hours for the car raffle. On the day of the drawing the Junior Miss of the State of Washington. Debbie Scholtz drew for the prizes. Also on that memorable afternoon the top salesman, Terry Tombari was recognized for his outstanding salesmanship. WW4 FOUND IIDllRllWlIE This year's food drive was a success with almost half of the food brought in on the last day. Both the food and money totals surpassed last year's and many families had a happier Thanksgiving because of it. Each advisee group was put in charge of a certain number of families. Food was kept in the advisee group's room as well as in the B-Squad property room. A Knights of the Leash member was assigned to each room and a crew of Leash went around every night to weigh the food. Mr. Perley was the director of the drive. This year's club, the Tri-School Drama Club. was made up of: Mike Barber for Gonzaga, Erin Rooney for Marycliff, and Tracy Maher for Holy Names. Under the leadership of Mr. Delehanty the club helped in much of the preliminary planning of the plays. The first play was I Never Saw Another Butterfly. The play was a resounding success with two performances of standing room only crowds. The second play. entitled Grease was a 50's musical. Presented in the spring. this play was a Theatrical gem.
