Born in a meager farmhouse in Sotto Il Monte, Italy, Angelo grew up and Worked alongside the men in the vineyards. When only eleven he decided to enter the priesthood, and after much hard work he received a scholarship to the Pontifical Seminary in Rome. Nor is our Pope merely a pious old man ignorant of the world around him. He was drafted into the Italian Army ten years after ordination and served in World War I first as a medical corps sergeant, and later as a lieutenant chaplain. In 1925 Pius X gave him his first diplomatic assignment, Apostolic Visitor to Bulgaria. In 1935 he was sent to Turkey and Greece as Apostolic Delegate. When Ron- calli was informed he had been made Nuncio to France, he asked his superiors if they were mad. He, a poor bishop, a Nuncio to France? But his humble- ness was overshadowed by his ability, and in 1953 our dearly beloved Pius XII made Roncalli a cardinal, and Patriarch of Venice. And now as Pope, this thought typifies the character of the man Who is indeed our spirtual father, Above all else think of me as a priest . 3 INTRO CLASSES 20-39 ACTIVITIES 40-65 SQKKW 511551 KB- DuC'rloN ln W? Dear Graduate: When you receive your diploma at the Commencement Exercises, you will feel a sense of achievement. It will mean the successful completion of four years of work with the approval of many instructors. Many of you have taken the opportunity to expand your abilities in the various fields of debate, elocution and sports. ln those fine extracurricular activities you have acquired the spirit of cooperation, self-sacrifice and devotion to your school. However the real test of your accomplishment will come within the next few years. Just how deep did the roots of self-sacrifice and faith really set? We will Watch your progress with the greatest of interestg and We hope that you will be such a man in a life of devoted duty, that we may continue to be proud that we were a help to you. 6 PRffNCIPAL'S MESSAGE 5 Ny. Z Q FR. RICHARD O'DAY, S.J. Over four hundred years ago, St. Ignatius instructed his Jesuit followers ever to seek the greater and longer lasting goodifor God's glory. Since that time, Jesuits have determined that good to be two things: The missions and the education of youth. They have been convinced of this for four hundred years and they maintain that same conviction today. Many other important and great works are undertaken by the Society of Jesus, but still the Jesuits feel that even now the missions and the schools are their most important works. The importance of the missions is obviousg the importance of schools, not so obviousg for here the results are neither evident nor are they dramatic. Only years later do the seeds of Catholic education flower and blossom into a devout family life and a Christian-civic leadership. Ephemeral academic or athletic success is not the aimg nor is it the justification of the Jesuit system. The success or failure of your education will only appear in the future. That future begins the day you leave Gonzage Prep and concludes with the end of your lives. May God grant that what you have been given here will prove durable, durable enough that you may seek His greater glory in all places, at all times, in all things. 7 fs, 11 wfm Mlfmlll ' 1 A: K N WV 'i 5 5 S s 5 s a s 2 X f E gs T? ii Secretary Rod Adams y U . J. , comple- ted a very successful year. The first meeting foreshadowed an excellent year when the members elected Dennis Olson as Student Prefect and Mike Moran as Secretary-Treasurer. Some of the very successful activities sponsored by the Senior Sodality or in which they participated were several days of recollection, a food drive for poor families, Sodality-sponsored dances, and raising money for the missions. These and the diligent performance of their daily spiritual duties helped the Senior So- dality put to practice the high ideals of the Sodality. Interests, as varied as the members, oxi- dized to white heat by movies and informative talks, led the neo-scientists to new realms of knowledge. One of the projects initiated by Mr. Lynch was that of sci- entific shows beamed by the members toward the parochial grade schools. A field trip to the Atomic Works at Hanford was highly regarded by all. At final count-down , those rockered into offices were Pat Hurley, presi- dentg Bob Luger, vice-presidentg Pat Ford, secretaryg Howard Platter, treas- urerg Jeff Duenwald, sergeant-at-armsg and Bill Plummer, club reporter. Awful' :Q ., , 1 nik 2 Wwrin, N. 4 ,, X. if or' 3 5 lu X Q ,Q 1, Sm xg Q A 1 ,,,A PHOTO STAFF The important thing for students is to get into some activity Where they can unselfishly give themselves. This giving generously brings happiness to school life and is the heart of school spirit. The dark room is one of the many outlets at Prep where a boy can learn something useful and give something to the school. The purpose of the photography room is to furnish the yearbook and the school paper with the pictures they need. It also gives pub- licity for the bulletin board by the cafeteria and any of the various clubs within the school. This year, thedark room has been in the capable hands of STEVE MENARD. He has been helped by Dan Ritchie and Mike Herzog. These men have Worked long and hard and should be commended for their generosity and school spirit. Preparing to print pictures are Dan Ritchie and Mike Herzog. Focusing the enlarger is Steve Menard The leads of the operetta. As the LUIGIAN goes to press, the drama club is working on Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance , and it promises to be a finer success than last year's op- eretta, H.M. S. Pinafore . The leads in the operetta are Larry Zimmerman, Mike Strong, Tim Merriman, Walt Weller, Harry Denenny, Mike Parks, Jim Maguire. The pirate chorus consists of Joe McGinn, Denny Olson, Larry Eldridge, Tom Shine, Mike Burns, Pat Kunz, Denny Biallis, Dean Hicks, Bill Lowry, Chuck Van Marter, and Larry Geisbush. The policemen's chorus includes Myron Jacobs, Bob Rainer, Bill Lander, Mike Reilly, Wendy Winslow, Mike Taylor, and Gary Bye. General Stanley's sons are played by Jim Leonetti, Keith Kragelund, Pat Hurley, Louis Rector, Jim Sharp, and Harry Batty. The stage manager is very capable, Charlie Schoenberg, assisted by Dave Shikany. Publicity men are Larry Menegas and Joe McKinnon. The backdrop painting is by Dean Hicks, and the accompanist is Dick Tausch. Father Chapman, S. J. is doing his usual excellent job of making all the costumes. His assistant is Doug Bullis. The pirate chorus SOCK AND MR. ROBERT GOEBEL, S. J. Jay Trembley won the highest award at the Catholic High School Play Festival. Seven of these boys are two year veterans of the club. The rest are one year members. Outstanding, is the word to describe this year's glee club. According to the director, Mr. James Kaufer, S. J. , this is the finest group in his three years at Gonzaga. There are three main reasons for this. First, the majority of the boys are upperclassmen, and their voices are naturally fuller and more mature. Secondly there are 37 boys in the group, giving it a nice, full effect. Lastly, the boys have Worked hard to bring out all their potential, and this third point is probably the biggest reason for their success. Some highlights of the year include the full-length concert at Walla Walla which was received so well that the club was invited to make the concert a yearly affairg the half-hour radio broadcast over KXLYg the Associates Banquet at the Davenport Hotelg and the performance at Mt. St. 1vLichae1's for the Jesuit Scholastics. Other engagements Were: the Mass of the Holy Spirit, Gonzaga Prep. parent-teacher, St. Francis of Assisi parent-teacher night, Gonzaga night, Catholic Women's Business Club, Fairchild Air Base hospital, Mt. St. Joseph, Good Sheperd, and many other school and city functions. Looking over a selection are Jim McGuire, Dan Jones, and Larry Weller. These boys have been in the club three years. Remarks of visiting students are often to the effect that our plant is com- parable to a palace, but few students or visitors realize what a job it is to keep a building of this size in good condition. Nor do they realize the amount of work necessary to provide tasty meals for the students at noon and the hungry Jesuits three times a day, all year long. Last Friday the Indians surprised the strong Lewis and C111-r Tigers in the second half, and fought to ga. 19-19 tie. Larry Summers . Tom Collins were the big guns in the second half of the contest. Summers kept the Tiger defense alive by flipping flat passes that a up the yardage, but Collins was the workhorse in lugging the ball for a net of 182 yards. Prep will again test their defense against a good run-pass team as they did a week ago against the Rogers Pirates. The Zag offense rolled and the defense tightened as Gonzaga cupped the opener of the season from Rogers 13-7. Quick Score ' After receiving the opening kick- off, Gonzaga marched straight for paydirt. The drive, highlighted by a 38 yard pass from Pugh to Mil- ler, set the stage for the hard run- ning of Tim Connors and Mike Mc- Canta who brought the ball to the one' foot line. Pat Pugh piled over for the counter. The try for extra point failed. Just before half time, a few tense mom-ents were on hand as Pat Pugh tried unsuccessfully to click with big John Miller as four times the ball fell incom- plete in the end zone. I Rogers Scores The third quarter elapsed with- out a score. In the fourth quarter Rogers' Al Rhodes put on his run- ning shoes and made up most of the 92 yards from Rogers' own eight yard line to the Prep end zone himself, After Rhodes crack- ed into the end zone, Robbie Eisen- sohn added the point and Rogers was ahead 7-6. With only 6 minutes, 30 seconds left to play, Tim Connors came back into play after being side- lined in the third period, and im- mediately began to roll. A smash- ing 21 yard drive by Connors brought the ball to the 40 yard line. Climax Three plays later the hustling fullback proved his running abili ty in powering 10 yards to the 15. Pat Pugh clicked with Joe Mc- Ginn for seven ,and Connors bulled his way within six inches of the goal. Pugh again scored on a tricky bootleg. Not that all the Prep supporters follow this to the letter, or anyone else for that matter, but if a person filters through the Gonzaga crowd after a loss, and then after a win, comments would lead right back to our little phrase. Well, I guess it's just human nature! 2. ,, its 21 Looking back to the biggest upset of the year, fGonza.ga. over L.C.J, most of the seniors and some of the juniors, if they can re- member back about four years, can remember another Prep team. That team, Trauba, Sprague, Hunting, August, and Sim.ms would be the precedent of Stephens, Shine, Sadler, Ferrier and Asan. Pit if 514 str Not that the former team knocked off L.C. with some excellent slow- ball control, but they played well as a team just as our team did two weeks ago. Who says that history doesn't repeat itself. :lf Ik Sis Bk John Stephens has been picked as this month's Athlete of the Month, but we can't go any further without mentioning the fine play of his team mates. Tom Shine hits 1000 percent from the floor: Sadler drib- bles the legs off anyone on the L.C. team: Asan shoots and rebounds with agility: and Ferrier and Stephens dominate the boards over the L.C. big men. All in all, we have five athletes for this month. all 41 if lt! While we're picking over Lewis and Clark, we reflect back to last yea.r's second L.C. game. In that tilt which went into overtime, when Mike Carl dumped i.n nine points in the extra period, we de- feated the Tigers and cinohed at least a second place tie. G. Pups vs. C. V. Bears In Tonight's Finish of City League Basketball The Gonzaga Bullpups wind up the '58-'59 basketball season against the Central Valley Bears tonight. Prep hopes to knock off C.V., and 4-limb out of the cellar before the termination of the season. Gonzaga played with spirit against West Valley. Prep over- came frequent five and six point defecits. and fought down to the wire only to lose 34-33. Pat Pugh led the Pup scorers with 12 points. L. C. Tough Gonzaga found their hands full in going against L.C. to repeat their first round victory. John Stevenson and Steve Grover con- trolled the boards for the Tigers. and L.C. cruised to a 52-40 victory. Prep sought revenge from the Shadle Highlanders, but the privilege was thwarted as the Scotties won 53-42. Dave Fei-rier :mil Pat Pugh led the Prep scor- ing with 15 and 12 points respectively. The sharp - shooting Rogers pirates found the range from 30 feet. but couldn't stop the team work of the Bullpup-s as Gonzaga eaked out a 51-50 victory. George Asan's jump shot with three seconds left won the game for the deserving Pups. Pat Pugh and Dave Ferrier led the way with 15 points apiece. Asan, Pugh Lead With the help of George Asan's 16 points and Pat Pugh's 14 points, Gonzaga romped over the favored North Central Indians, 56-39. Bees Seek Victory After Tiger Loss Prep's Bee squad was pulled down to .500 Percent, 9-9 win- loss record by Lewis and Clark, who defeated the Pup Be-es 46-39 last Tuesday. This was their se- cond loss in a row, including a. loss to North Central the Friday before. In the L.C. tilt John Bruce led the Zag 'scoring with 21 points. Bruce has scored 21 twice this year. Bees Rally The Pups lagged behind in the first half. and left the floor at intermission at the short end or a 28-14 score. The second half was a different story. The JVs, despite L.'C.'s height, outplayed, outshot. and outrebounded the Tigers for the remainder of the game. It wasn't enough, however, as the final buzzer sounded with the score 46-39 for L.C. Defense Tough Mr. Daniel Meyer, S.J., had some praise for Joe McCullough, who not only shot eight points, but did a good job of defense, hold- ing the T'iger's Jacoy to only two points. Other -scorers for Prep were: Bud Hare, 63 Ed Schimmels and Pete Farm each had two. Gonzaga Hopes to Dump C.V.g Finds Going Tough in W.V. Loss In tonight's game with Central Valley, Gonzaga hopes to regain that something with which they toppled Lewis and Clark two weeks ago. The Central Valley Bears appear to he the team to beatg and everybody knows it. Prep lost its polish last week in losing to West Valley, 40-26. The West Valley game was at disappointment for the Bullpup supporters after the previous win over Lewis and Clark the week before. WV moved well, :ind made everything count, while Gonzaga on the other hand coulrln't get going, and had only eight points at half-time. Gonzaga finally rallied in the 1'o1.u'th quarter, but it vas too late. and West Valley won their first game from Prep since 1956, 40-26. Tom Shine had nine and George Asan had six to lead the Bullpups in what little scoring there was. Upset L. C. The day was January 165 the time was 8200: the place was the Spokane Coliseum. Here, the Gon- zaga Bullpups inflicted an am- :izing defeat on the Lewis and l00 Clark Tigers. The remarkable shooting of Tom Shine, the ex- cellent rebounding of Dave Ferrier, John Stephens, and George Asan, and the brilliant ball-handling of Frank Sadler all but drove the Tigers crazyp Prep took the lead, and never lost it, and the end was inevitable. Gon- zaga beat the highly-touted Tigers, 41- 34. Tom Shine led the Prep scoring with 12 points, Shadle Wins In the first meeting with Shadle Park in Varsity competition, Gon- zaga found its hands full. What 'started off to be an excellent close game turned out to be a had night for the Prepsters. Shadle hit consistently, and Gonzaga had only spurts, as Shadle won handiiy, 53-40. ami, im A M ff 'iffy ,W as Ms rf X QM fb M 9 M573 Y 1 s fQEz'i:Si5:1s?vif:ff' f Y21 121 Q .w 7 Q ,11 5 yy, ,...,. v., WA, ui f A , A-Wm Lfmmmf,-fWm5q,fX,,,ff, -L, . ,gy .,s1 'ff1A,1xq5qg '11 ,,,g'j,yf,gfcVi,Lf ,. w ,, 35,l.,xf-35,53 ' - l 'rf , V -L2t1wQzfQ:vQ5SisE'f ivfliizwsxs-,Q , M: Q., Q.,,fg wh. 1:4 .mf If, x . S The top performers of the season were: Mike Flynn, Don Durall, Mike Shanks, Mike Keegan, Fred Marshall, and Maurie Flynn. Still the one difficulty of not being able to meet the seconds and thirds needed to win dual meets remained. Gonzaga Prep had good representation at the State meet in Pull- man, with Don Durall winning the half-mile and Mike Flynn placing fourth in the quarter-mile. In the Tri-City district, Don Durall set a new city record in the half-mile, to go through the season in that event undefeated. S n Prospects for this year look somewhat dim. There is a need for many more boys to turn out for track. r Returning lettermen are:Tim Connors in the sprints, Paul' Swift and Scott Rice in the quarter-mile, Dan Vollmer in the hurdles, Ed Stachofsky in the shot put and high jump, and Maurie Flynn in the mile. APO Loca ETICS CONTEST 310' Shown in action at the Apologetics Contest are Mike Hood, Jerry Mooney, Steve E. Kuder, Jay Schille, Charles Tilford, and Tom Carey. Gonzaga Prep had no sooner become adjusted to its new principal when things began to happen. Using an old magician's trick, Fr. O'Day pulled out of his hat not a furry rabbit but an old idea-- an apologetics contest. Immediately, religion teachers received the command that all students must write a speech in defense of some facet of Christian doctrine. After sifting through a mountain of essays, Fr. O'Day announced the finalists. Now the stage was set. On December 3, decked out in tuxedoes, six amateur theologians shook the walls of the ultra- modern Washington Water Power Building with their speeches. Mr. Robert Dellwo was master of ceremonies. To prevent any minor heresies, Archbishop Roberts was on hand to judge the contest and give a criticism of each speech. Junior Mike Hood carried off the first-prize silver crucifix, and junior Jay Schille, the second- prize missal. ' 116 ESPRIT This year, with the inauguration of its new literary journal, Esprit, Gonzaga Prep has launched out on an entirely new idea. Begin to stimulate interest in the best creative writing among the students as well as to give them a taste of printer's ink, it is the first of its kind in the city. Off to a slow start, Prep produced only one issue this year, but its first editor, Jay Schille, and its moderator, Mr. George St. Hilaire, S. J. hope to make it at least a tri-yearly publication next year, if not a quarterly. Esprit welcomes and encourages articles from all the students in wide varieties from the realms of feature, essay, literary and historical criticism, poetry, short story, humor, and book reveiw. It will remain Esprit's policy to by-line every contribution and to strive to maintain the classy style it set as a norm in its first issue. Since the finest in the art of writing from Prep's students is to make up its contents, Esprit will continually endeavor to match this excellence with an equally ar- tistic layout of glossy pages, color, and exquisite drawings. The production staff is Paul Swift, Chuck Van Marter, Editor Jay Schille discusses plans for the first Dave Rolfe, Dean Hicks, John Mtufnm. edition of Esprit with moderator, Mr. George St. Second row: Chuck Cory, John Aslin, Paul Schlicke, Hilaire. Second row: Mike Kane, Wendy Winslow, master of ceremoniesg Mike Adams, Bill Condon, guest speaker. The oldest and perhaps the most popular contest at Gonzaga is the Elocution contest. The contest is divided into two divisions, Junior and Senior, which give Prepsters a chance to display their fo- rensic talent in competition. Because of the late date of the Junior contest, it is not covered in this year's book. The Senior contest took place in early February at the Student Union Building on the campus of Gonzaga University. Before, it has usually taken place before the student body. The wide variety of selections made the judging difficult. After much debating, Jack Delehanty earned first place, Bill Trudeau, second, Mike Kane, third. The three days set aside to consider the salvation of one's soul are the most important of the school year. This year's retreat was very orderly. The usual noisy groups were outstandingly quiet. All of the students concentrated on making a satisfactory spiritual agreement between themselves and God. Below: Father John Gouldie conducts a special series of spiritual talks for the frosh in the school chapel. SPIRITUAL FATHERIS MESSAGE FR. JOHN GOUDIE, S.J. On the facades of many Jesuits buildings, in the sanctuaries of many Jesuit churches and on the pages of many Jesuit documents, one can readily read the motto of the Society of Jesus, A. M. D. G. ad majorem Dei gloriam . This watchword of the Society's founder, Saint Ignatius Loyola, every- thing to the greater glory of God , has guided the grace life of the Society for the past 400 years. For this, the Society of Jesus works, for this, the Society of Jesus lives. It is not strange then, that in the school of the Society of Jesus, of which Gonzaga Preparatory en- joys membership, that an insistent effort is made to mold all young men coming under the Society's influence according to a very special pattern of grace. In this very special work, our Holy Father, Pius XII, of happy memory, has given us a valuable assist in his new Eucharistic legislation, his Constitution, Christus Dominus . This document has made the life of grace flow more easily to all souls. To Gonzaga Preparatory students, it has offered the occasion to go to Mass more frequently and to receive the Holy Eucharist more readily. Each day, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered twice, at 11:00 a. m. and 11:45 a. m. Grace is a free gift of God. With the new available and easy law of Eucharistic fastg i. e. fasting from solids three hours and from liquids one hour, with the added help that the drinking of water no longer breaks the fast, no student has any reason to be wanting in the grace life that is offered him so superabundantly through this most understanding law of our late Pontiff Puis XII. The society of Jesus is most humbly thankful to God and his holy mother for inspiring the Holy Father to grant such a benign favor. Each of her sons in loyalty will strive manfully to compensate for this relaxed law of fasting, opening wider the avenue of God's grace, by striving through the new grace gained, to be shining examples of Christian life, especially through their works of penance and charity, as the law requires and in fulfilling the motto of their Jesuit teachers, everything to God's greater glory . I GONZAGA NIGHT Gonzaga Night, 1958, opened in a blinding blaze of tal- ent. The game but undermanned Prep band entertained the audience until the curtain parted, and out stepped Grand Marshal Terry Flannery to open the show. The frosh started the entertainment ball rolling with a dramatization of a teacher's impression of Gonzaga. Next, the sophomores staged a cutting parody titled Gunsmoke and featured several bad-land episodes. The act ended in a burst of mis-timed gunfire. Then came the upperclassmen. The juniors won the best-act award for a versatile program with juniors de- picting the Everly Brothers, Xavier Cugat, Dick Clark, and calypso singers. The seniors presented a touching story of Christmas narrated by Bill Condon and assisted by the glib comments of Bill Trudeau. They also dra- matized a pseudo SOCIAL CLUB act. Class Marshals, Larry Zimmerman, seniorg Hank Matthew, junior, John Keegan, sophomoreg and Mike Cun- ningham, freshman, introducted their respective acts. The evening was climaxed by the awarding of football letters by Mr. Frazier and the cross country awards by Mr. Schlim, S. J. The Kennely Inspirational Award was given to All- City, Tim Connors for his outstanding example on the football squad. Mr Conyard, S. J. , hands out midget football numerals. From Chrysostom to Churchill, the words of great men have filled the centuries, have altered and plotted the course of history. Today more than ever, we find that the Words of men are forming the wor1d's way of life. It is not enough that we have ideas, but it is necessary that we be able to express them. As social beings, our lives are spent communicating with others. Through the medium of speech, we share with others our thoughts and aspirations and they share theirs with us. It was for this purpose that the toastmasters' club was founded, that its members might learn to communicate their ideas to others in a coherent, clear, and interesting manner. In our science-laden era which is so concerned with teaching men to exist, let us not forget or hastily throw out those processes which teach men how to live. Other members are Dave Rolfe, John Aslin, Jack Dele- hanty, John Martin, Dick Bumgarner, Jerry Mooney, Keith Weller, Rod Adams, Kevin Martin, Don Spencer, Pete Kombol. 5 rffiig A L.
