Kunz was chosen as the first Rector of Gonzaga Preparatory School after its separation from the University. Suffering, rightfully accepted, tends to temper the personality and forge the character into a man who is patient and just. Having been tried in the crucible of suffering, he constantly used his head to handle himself and used his head and his heart to handle his subjects. Character is a victory, not a gift. Through the years Fr. Kunz built character in himself by daily weaving the little threads of habit, each a tiny thing in itself, but all contributing to produce a tapestry displaying a model Priest of God. Fr. Kunz worked like a man,not a machine. He worked thoughtfully and gratefully, he worked when racked with pain, and no matter how great the pain or how severe the attack, he merely pushed himself the harder, yet never allowed a word of complaint to pass his lips. He not only said a prayer- he lived one. To him this LUIGIAN is gratefully dedicated. To Fr, Michael B. Kunz, S. J., humble Priest and first Rector of Gonzaga Preparatory School, this book is dedicated. faculty seniors sports classes activities 38-69 70-9l 92 - ISI l r 4 Y r J WC1'Qrio0c'h Rector Ft, pa V4.6 Q1 Q, Fr. We must learn to take effective steps to achieve it. The only real success is heaven, just as the only real failure is hell. All other victories or disappointments are secondary to this. We must all learn to use the other creatures on the face of the earth for God's Glory and for the salvation of our own or our neighbors' souls. Our Lord by his life and death showed us how to use creatures. You, the graduates of 1960, have for the past four years at Prep been imbued with the way of life proper to a Christian gentleman and now you stand on the threshold of the future ready to heed the call of Christ, 'Go ye also into the vineyard. If you have made your education a part of you in such wise that you can live the principles that you have been taught, then you have no fear of the future. You will find a way or make one. We, your teachers and friends, sincerely hope and pray for your ultimate success, the Beatific Vision. Please God may we join you there in the Great Beyond. Dave's terrific rebounding and shooting helped win these games for Gonzaga. Dave was third in rebounding in the city and high in points, scoring twenty-eight against L.C. Left: George Asan, the most determined of any player, shows his agility in basketball. Second in rebounding and among the best five in the city, George as captain, led Gonzaga to many victories. Gonzaga completely outplayed Shadle in this league game. The job of a manager of sports is no easy one, but Mike Reilly, Bill Oxrieder, and Pat McKenna under Mr. Church, SJ., did an excellent job. This year's GONZAGAN staff has met and realized the tradition of high school journalism. Although Gon- zaga Prep is the only school in the city to lack a regular journalism class, the GONZAGAN still leads in journalistic achievement. At the Gonzaga Univer- sity Press Conference held in October, attended by journalists from five states, the GONZAGAN was awarded first place in Class A newspapers. Feature editor jay Schille received a third place in feature writing. Steve Kuder, editor-in-chief, was president of the junior Press Club, and Ron Schoenberg, associate editor, was vice-president. Many Prep! students write for the GONZAGAN as one of their extra-curricular activities. Writing for a school publi- cation gives the student an unparalleled opportunity to develop his writing abilities. Sports writers are: First row: Bill Allen, Denny Arndt. Mr. Denis Dennehy Steve Kuder Mr. George Dick Barbieri Essay Editor St. Hilaire Fiction Editor Moderator ESPRIT proved it was no flash-in-the-pan, short-lived publication by appearing twice during the school year. The two issues featured short stories, essays, criticisms, poetry, and book reviews written by the students and effectively illustrated by the ESPRIT artists. Despite the high costs of publishing the magazine, ES PRIT charged the students nothing and maintained its original layout standards of twenty glossy pages, color, and artwork. Since its first appearance last year, it has garnered praise and letters of congratulation from many of the leading high schools and colleges of the country. Many expressed their surprise and delight at the fine quality of writing, artwork, and makeup. For the future, as the student editors express it, ESPRIT plans 'to maintain the high-class standards we have set for ourselves in the first issue. For we feel that only the best layout is worthy of the high- est literary efforts and academic excellence of our fellow students. With three issues under its belt, Prep's literary magazine is ready to join the school newspaper and yearbook as a full-fledged member of Gonzaga Prep's fine student publications. Finley Brown was presented through the combined efforts of the Gonzaga Prep student body at the annual Gonzaga High Night of 1959. The objective of this year's High Night was to portray for the audience a light-hearted interpretation of what happens during a student's four year stay at Gonzaga. This typical student took the fictitious title of J. Finley Brown and was played successively by a member of each of the four classes. School spirit was the sub-theme of High Night and each Class Marshall spoke about the school spirit of his class before introducing the skit. The program was put under way by a welcoming speech by Grand Marshall Chuck Shannon. The four Class Marshalls were Frank Etter, Bob Henderson, Jerry Mooney, and Dennis Caffrey. An entertaining musical program was also conducted by the Prep Band and Glee Club. Freshman numerals, B-squad numerals, and Varsity letters were presented after each skit. In conclusion to a wonderful evening, Senior Bill Farley was awarded the Inspirational Award for out- standing example shown on the football squad. Hundreds of times this was but the beginning of a modern alchemy process that would capture the latent images of fleeting moments of glory on field, stage, and soapbox for the glossy memory of the LUIGIAN or GON ZAGAN. But lest time should efface the memory of long hours of labor over the developing trays or the darkroom race of enlarger versus deadline, let us inscribe in this printed memory the names of those who did a very generous job in covering Gonzaga's greatest moments this year. Steve Menard was ably assisted by class- mate Dan Ritchie and by Mike Herzog and neophyte Marv Feist, both sophomores. These boys sacrificed their own time and labor during room hours and after school to insure the multitude of photos needed not only for student publications but for other sources of publicity. Though no letters are awarded for non-ath- letic labors, the very real 'letter' of g-ratitude is awarded these fellows by Gonzaga Prep. Mike Herzog Mr. john Lynch Marv Feist lift?
