They are the ancestors of our spiritual life and we regard them with reverence and awe. May we, who draw on the rich treasury of the past, be quickened and refreshed and made strong to march with equal courage to all that the future holds for us. With prayerful lips and grateful hearts we return thanks this Holy Year to those staunch figures of the past who have left us such fine traditions of good living and sterling Faith, and who gave us such challenging examples of noble sacrifice. To all of them and to our present Pontiff, gloriously reigning, we dedicate our l.uigian. ST. PETER'S BASILICA HIS HOLINESS POPE PIUS XII l ava l FR. GORDON E. TONER, S.J. FR. FRANCIS E. CORKERY, S.. During the i949-i950 school year there was seldom any activity at Gonzaga n which the band did not participate. Though poorly uniformed at the start of the ear, they were one of the most skillful marching groups at the annual Merry-Go- sentation, demonstrating its musical ability at Gonzaga Night, and in the city High School football and basketball games. To show their appreciation, the Student Body went all out to purchase fifty new band uniforms through the Curtis Magazine Sub- scription drive. Richeson also received the award for the best male debater in the league. ln the March State Tournament at Pullman Gonzaga won second and a W.S.C. scholarship for Richeson. The club's success depended greatly upon Mr. James Reichmann, S.J., the debating coach. Whatever the debaters gained is due ultimately to his careful instruc- tion and example. Although Gonzaga has received a large share of trophies, the true success of the season is not to be found in that fact. Rather the season was successful because of the training given the debaters themselves. They have learned a quality which will help them all their lives. The final stanza of the league schedule saw the fighting Irish defeat the West Val- ley Eagles and trounce the Lewis and Clark Tigers for an upset victory. Gonzaga was once again forced to bow to the Rogers Pirates and the championship, tournament bound Indians. 68 Rip Corrigan Chuck Beckel Tom Sprague Roy Velling Competition was keen among the Zag hoopsters during the l95O season. The starting five was sel- dom determined until shortly be- fore game time. Leading the ball-hawking speed- sters in the front court were Neil Cronin and Tom Sprague. They were followed closely by Chuck Beckel and John O'NeiI. Domination of the backboards was a specialty of the lofty, rugged combination of Captain Rip Corrigan, Bob Helbling, Roy Velling, and Pat Lynch. The fans could always depend upon Roger Steele and Don Curran to turn in a fine performance when they were called upon to do so.
