J., President Foreword Contained Within the covers of this book is the history of another glorious year at Gonzaga. Many have been her achievements and victories and truly Worthy of honor has she become during her fifty-two years of teaching and service. We have endeavored to reflect some of her greatness in this l939 Luigian. In these pages her progress in all forms of education, mental, moral and physical, is manifested. May Luigi Gonzaga, our patron, better known as St. Aloysius Gonzaga. bless our efforts, so that this 1939 edition of the Luigian may be worthy of him Whose name it bears. THE LUIGIAN 193 9 COACH JOHN W. UPUGGYH HUNTON Dedication For the past eleven years he has been at Gonzaga, coach- ing Gonzaga athletics and developing her teams to be among the best in the state. Recently he was appointed head coach of the Gonzaga university football team. To us in the high school this means that he will no longer be our coach, inspiring our teams to victory, though we know he will always be with us in spirit. Thus in gratitude for what he has done for us and with best wishes for success in his new position, we, the students of Gonzaga high school, dedicate the 1939 Luigian to A'Puggy Hunton. But the team had the same characteristics as all Gonzaga teams, especially those coached by Puggy Hunton. They more than made up in fight for what they lacked in experience, and consistently outplayed their rivals to annex their third consecutive city football title, and secure permanent possession of the coveted Quackenbush Trophy. SEPTEMBER 23-GONZAGA 0, BUTTE 6 The Bullpups opened the 1938 grid season away from home, and lost a heart- breaking game 6-O at the hands of the Butte High Purples in the Copper City. The Butte lads played heads up football all the way and avenged the defeat which Gonzaga handed them last year. The Bullpups were too green to make their soon-to-be-feared razzle-dazzle plays click and could never overcome the six-point advantage Butte gained on a second period touchdown. OCTOBER 6-GONZAGA 14, ROGERS 0 The Bullpups showed no sign of greenness in the first game of the city series, and romped to an easy two touchdown victory over the Rogers Pirates. The out- come of the game was never in doubt as the Bullpups had things their own way throughout the contest. Late in the second quarter Frank McBreen added the second touchdown on a reverse play. Not wishing to disclose their trick plays, Puggy's charges relied on straight football for their victory. OCTOBER 14-GONZAGA 12, LEWIS AND CLARK 6 In one of the most thrilling high school games ever played in Spokane, the Bullpups eked out a very hard fought one touchdown victory over the highly favored Tigers from Lewis and Clark. Gonzaga drew first blood in the open- ing period when Prank McGuigan crossed to pay dirt on an end-around play. The South Siders came right back and scored a touchdown on a long pass from Wouters to Gilberg. But the Bullpups were not to be denied, and after a long drive lVlcBreen scored on a reverse from Wick. The remaining minutes of the game were full of thrills for the seven thousand fans that attended. Lewis and Clark threatened a number of times but could never penetrate the strong Bullpup defense. When the game ended, Gonzaga was in possession of the ball on their own five yard line after checking a strong Lewis and Clark threat. OCTOBER 21-GONZAGA 20, NORTH CENTRAL 0 Continuing their victorious march toward a third consecutive city title, the Bullpups soundly drubbed the cellar-dwelling North Central Indians in a night game before a crowd of five thousand rabid fans. The game started slowly, but once the vaunted razzle-dazzle Gonzaga offense started to click the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Prank McBreen then followed with another score on his now famous reverse play. The score stood 13-O in favor of the Bullpups at the end of the first half, and during the second half, Gonzaga kept up the pace and finally added another touchdown. Higgins scored once more, this time on a fake reverse. Mauro added two extra points from placement in three at- tempts. OCTOBER 27--GONZAGA 14, LEWIS AND CLARK 0 Opening the second half of the city series with a bang, the inspired Bullpups proved conclusively their superiority over the Lewis and Clark Tigers as they outclassed the South Siders before a night game crowd of ten thousand fans. Mc- Breen opened the scoring as he crashed over from the five yard line early in the second quarter. Walsh added another in the third period as he intercepted a Tiger pass and galloped 65 yards to pay dirt. Mauro converted after both scores. The Tigers were helpless as the Pups had things their own way in winning this all- important tussle. NOVEMBER 3-GONZAGA 13, NORTH CENTRAL 0 The devastating Bullpups clinched their third consecutive football champion- ship when they downed the spirited North Central Indians in a rough game under the lights. Held effectively for almost the entire first half, the Blue and White eleven cut loose with a double lateral reverse followed by a long forward pass from Wick to McFarland, who safely scampered across the last chalk line. Point- ing for their first win of the season, the Indians were hard to stop in the second half, but luckless as they were they bowed again in defeat. Mauro added the extra point. NOVEMBER 10-GONZAGA 6, SEATTLE PREP 0 Invading new fields for their annual game with the Prep school, the Bullpups added new laurels to their already many by virtue of a win. There was never any doubt as to the outcome despite the low score. The Spokaneites romped up and down the field almost at will, but monotonously failed to click near their opponents' goal line. The Prepsters couldn't find a weak spot in the Blue and XVhite defense all evening and failed to invade Gonzaga territory. Both offenses were hampered by a mud-soaked field, and the famous razzle-dazzle of the Bullpups was not displayed. Wick scampered around end from the ten yard line early in the first quarter for the only score of the game. NOVEMBER 18-GONZAGA 0, ROGERS 13 A slightly over-confident eleven took the field for Gonzaga against a primed. determined team from Rogers in the last game of the year. For the first time in the season the Bullpups were outplayed. They got off to a bad start and before they were fully conscious of what was happening, Williams of Rogers had crossed their goal from the two yard line for the first score. Vainly the Bullpups were trying to come back as Brown scored the second Rogers' touchdown after recovering a fumble. Williams proved too much for the Zag defense and fre- quently penetrated it for long gains, This was a sad closing to another glorious year for the Bullpups. Because of bad breaks and lack of experience, the Bullpups lost twelve games is as many starts in the city series. The games lost were, on the whole, very close, the Bull- pups showing superior power and ball handling during the first half, only to lose out in the closing minutes. Lack of efficient reserves spelled defeat in many cases. However, the dogged manner in which the team would keep fighting even when hopelessly defeated won them the title of the fighting Bullpupsf' It is doubtful if there ever was a more fighting team to don the blue and white. 54 THE LUIGIAN-1939 i x Trac X 7 U ' rw i JJJUC1 Above: Bob Bunch, George Staeheli, Bruce McFarland, Tom Campbell Back row: Jack Dean, Jim Haas, Ray Smart, Jack Holmes Joe Carroll Bob McGoldrick, Jack Dube, Mike Bogle, Dan Beaulieu Dick Love Second row: Bob Bunch, Bob Harrington, Conrad Eronson Dick Vomaske Tom Campbell, Al Budig, Ken Carpenter, Geo. The pitching was probably the greatest source of consolation to the new coach when he began the year. I suppose you al- ready know that it is sponsored by the Mackie Smackie Macaroon Company? i'Oh, yes, I listen to it occasionally, but personally I'm not particularly fond of listening to the radio. I would rather step out in the evening, Have you ever been to Bachaud's 'French Chateau'? He built it last summer. It's quite popular here. According to his account Harry Brown and Jack Dean carried away all honors and stole the show. Nl see that Tony Medved, first base- man for the Cincinnati Black and Blues, knocked three teeth out of news cameraman Ed Burns, who took a pic- ture of Tony when he wasn't posing. mln a dispatch from the training camp of the world's middle-weight boxing champ, Trainer Jim O'Connor says that Champ Pete Little is in fine condition for his championship battle with Rough Russ Esposito. There's a big story here that says President Jim Mahar of the New York Athletic association has sent an invita- tion to Captain Art McDonell of the Canadian Maple Leafs to play off the world's hockey championship in Madi- son Square Garden. What's this! Only four Americans are invited to participate in the Olympic games to be held in Java in the spring! lt says that the only ones who made the tryouts are toe dancer Al Little, marble champion J. E, Murphy, murnbly-peg champ Ellsworth Connelly and tight rope walker Ralph Bockmier. I won- der why John Cowgill isn't making the trip? Oh, haven't you heard? He must have had something to forget, for he joined the French Foreign legion two weeks ago. For the second time during the course of the evening l glance at the Colistro Chime Clock and suddenly realize that l have spent nearly four hours with my old friend talking over the doings of our former schoolmates. So interested have we been that we did not notice the passing of time, and now the hour is such that even a traveling salesman feels the urge to catch a few winks of sleep, So I bid my host Good evening, and take my leave of Porta Plaza, not without the realiza- tion that l have spent a most pleasant evening and one l shall not soon forget.
