THE HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF '49 It has often been remarked that history has a peculiar way of re- peating itself, and so to a certain extent the history of this class is much like the history of classes which have gone before, and of others which will follow. So, remembering that to many people history is a rather dull subject except to those who have taken part in it personally, the Historian of the Class of 1949 will strive to be as brief as possible, and to touch only upon those subjects which are of significance not only to the class but to others. In September, 1938, 17 members of the present Senior Class started to school at Goldthwaite Grammar School. Everyone was -interested in making the honor roll the first year, but as the records show, we began to enjoy life to the fullest and forget the lessons. In the second grade some dropped out and some others joined us as was the case allthrough the years. Finally at the end of our seventh year Qeighth gradej , nineteen members graduated from Goldthwaite Grammar School. As a Freshman Class more members we re added to our number. Fortunately we entered high school with Mr. H. E. Patton as our superintendent, and even more for- tunately, he has continued to be our superintendent through the years. As freshmen our sponsors were Miss Laura Nelson and Mrs. Mary Bigham. Naturally, everyone tried to get in every club and activity possible. All through our high schooldays our class has had amajority of the football, basketball, and baseball stars. In our sophomore year we had Mrs. Beatrice Rucker for a sponsor.' During this year, too, we enjoyed many social activities. Of course, our studies were not Completely ignored. As Juniors we had Y. B. Johnson as sponsor. Our Class President was Robert Henry Johnson. Our year was indeed a success. With Mr. Patton directing, our Junior play, Papa Say's No , was a hit. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was gypsy style and indeed everyone was in a gay mood. Our Senior Year What memories The historian must pause for a moment's thought. Whatwas most important? There were our sponsors, Mrs. Margaret Thompson, and inspiration personified, and Mr. Bert Brewer, and cut-up if there ever was one. Our,Senior'Play, Great Caesar's Ghost , was another success.

The Junior-Senior Banquet! Another beautiful memory! The show under the big tent was the greatest circus ever witnessed by the Senior Class. The many other honors and events of this, our Senior Year, are too numerous to mention, but certainly they will remain at the top of our beautiful service. Mr. J. E. Tomkins, Jr. is to be our speaker at Commencement. We hope that all 39 of us receive our diplomas. The curtain is going down on the history of the Class of 1949, but in reality the Big Parade is just commencing. The bugle calls--Forward March!
