History of the Class of ’56 AS TOLD BY THE GOLD-DIGGER I was here the day they came and I can tell you, in all my experiences of seeing kids come in and go out of Gold- ston School, I have never seen more promising looking classes than those taught by Miss Grace Burke and Mrs. Ollie Garner in 1944. They were so promising looking, in fact, I decided to keep an eye on them right through their school days. Weil, this class went from the first grade clear through to the eighth grade at a rather steady pace. Then one day in 1952 they entered high school. All of them liked high school, they told me, because of the refreshing class changing schedule. Their leaders for this year were: Mosely Barber, Mollie Sims Cheek, Jerry Gaines, and Ruth Ellen Jourdan. I witnessed their Sophomore year, too. It was a successful year with Russell Palmer, Mollie Sims Cheek, Gilbert Ruth, J. T. Griffin, and Vivian Gilliland as class officers. The excitement ran high the next year when they got into the upper¬ classman bracket! There were so many things to make the Junior year a satisfying one. Besides a lot of hard studying, there was the Junior-Senior Banquet (the theme was April Showers ), trip to Florida, Hi-Lites, the Junior Play ( Aunt Cathie ' s Cat ), marshaling for the Senior Play and their part in the graduation services. Their leaders for the Junior year were Vivian Gilliland, Wesley Miller, Jimmie Phillips, Fairbell McMillan, and Jerry Gaines. Then came that grand day when they became Seniors. Jerry Gaines, their Senior president, told me to say a big Thank You to all you parents, teachers, and friends who have been such nice leaning posts for them these last twelve years. Other officers for this past year were Tommie Wilkie, Ruby Dowdy, Ruth Ellen Jourdan, and Ann Gail Murchison. After their Senior duties (the Senior play, The Cannibal Queen and the annual) will come graduation and my separation from them. But God will always be with them, and with Him, they cannot fail. Article III. Freshmen, we leave our urge to hurry to the exciting incidents through school and es¬ pecially the one of graduation. Article IV. To Mr. Andrew, we leave hopes that your next Geometry students will remind you of us. To Mr. Williford we leave hopes that the next year Seniors will not lose your hammers. I, Elmer Woody, do leave my bus to Johnny Hilliard. to Prophecy As some of the Gold-Diggers of ' 56 were out on a Sunday cruise, there appeared be¬ fore their eyes a strange bottle floating in the stream with a piece of paper in it. With much curiosity they picked it up and started to read. It was dated back in nineteen hundred and fifty-six, the year they graduated. This looks to be interesting, said one of the gold dig¬ gers, because it is now 1976, and nearly twenty years have passed. Another one said, Let ' s see what the class¬ mates of ' 56 are doing. William Barber is still taking it easy while his wife supports him, like he did in school. Next we see that cute little girl, Ann Gail Murchison, working as a private secretary, sitting in her boss ' s lap, very, very private. Now appears the great redhead of 1956, Tommie Wilkie, playing fullback in the Orange Bowl. Ruth Ellen Jourdan, our class ' s greatest artist, has an art school of her own set up in Gulf. There has been a McMillan service station put up in Goldston of which Bobby McMillan is the proud owner. Now comes Ruth Jeffries. She ' s very busy keeping house and taking care of the chil¬ dren while Lynn, her husband, is at work. What ' s next? Music! Why, it ' s Jimmie Phil¬ lips who has formed a hillbilly band of his own, and is going on tours all over the coun- try. There seemd to be a vacant space on the paper. No, it was a chicken farm with Wil¬ liam Griffin, the owner, taking it easy while the chickens make his living. What ' s that I hear? Yes, it ' s Gilbert Ruth still handling those bowling balls. Maybe some day he will have an alley of his own. Now we see Wesley Miller at the Univer¬ sity of North Carolina struggling after twenty years for his M.D. degree. Good luck, boy. Here comes that blonde, none other than Vivian Gilliland, going to take the tempera¬ ture of the gold-diggers of ' 56 in Antioch ' s modern hospital. Now we see Elmer Woody selling doodolys at the county fair. Russell Palmer now has his own television show and is the world ' s most famous banjo player. Fairbell McMillan is a beauty operator working in her own beauty shop: she has the latest styles. Norma Jean has moved into her new home, built by her husband, Robert Stone. Now we see Sherman Fields, the owner of his own sawmill, hiring some of his class¬ mates of ' 56 to carry slabs. Next we find Dan Gaines and his Chevy passing Herb Thomas on the Darlington Speedway. Coming into the spotlight is Jerry Gaines dancing to his rock and roll records on the Ted Mack ' s talent show. Ruby Jeffries, now a Home Demonstra¬ tion Agent, teaches the girls of Goldston School How to be Better Housekeepers. Helen Phillips, an electronics wife, now lives in Fayetteville, and is a secretary for her husband. Mollie Sims Cheek is back in Goldston School teaching her children to say Bon jour to her every morning. Last of all, we see that laughing girl, Ruby Dowdy, still laughing as she tries to find a spot on the Red Skelton Show. Then as we came to the end, our eyes be¬ came misty with happy tears. Today we had brought twenty years of the past to the fu¬ ture. Again the gold-diggers folded the paper, put it in the bottle and sent it on the way, in hopes some more of the class of ' 56 would find it.
