Senior Class Prophecy One day I was wandering around in the attic of the home that my husband and I had rented and found a strange looking object. It resembled a small flower vase. My curiosity was aroused, so 1 picked it up. At my silghtest touch, a small man appeared, as if in a cloud of smoke. He said, I am a genie. Your wish is my command.” This put me to thinking of my classmates of ’54. What could they be doing now? Ten long years had passed since we had last been together. I told the genie my desire and he handed me a long, narrow object that reminded me of a black bottle. He said in his slow, coarse voice, Look into this, my friend, and you shall have your wish.” Slowly taking the magic bottle from his smoky hand, I gazed into it. What I saw really surprised me. I could readily see my classmates whom I had not seen in a long time. First, I saw Sylvia Fields, who was the number one Charleston dancer on the Arthur Godfrey Show. Next, there came Shirley Burke, who was having a time looking after her husband and house full of kids. Looking again, I saw Leonard Barber, completely settled down in his and Shirley’s cozy little house. Ronnie Gaines appeared next. He was the owner of the large chain of Gaines’ Service Stations. Mary Meeks, having speeded up in sewing, was the proud owner of the Meeks’ Sewing School. Wayne Jacobs was really having it easy—sitting back and letting his wife support him. Augusta Hancock was reconciled to a troublesome married life with Ronald Gilliland. Erma Gaines was still trying to hook Billy Scott. Elvette Mclver was playing his harmonica with the Grand Old Oprey.” Shelby Wicker was teaching English in Goldston’s new ultramodern school. John Palmer was directing his own band over Goldston’s new radio station W. N. A. G. Ola Hart, a baby specialist, was in the Siler City Baptist Hospital. Reynolds Mason, a tobacco farmer, was making plenty of money for his wife and six children. Peggy Harris, an Air Force Nurse, was taking care of all the alcoholics and love sick two-timing males. Jeter Dowdy was a math professor at Duke University. Eugene Oldham was trying to publish a geometry book that required no work from the students. It looked as though it were raining, but no, it was only perspiration dripping from Ronald Gillilands face as he was working with his 25,000 chickens. The last one I saw was Lataine Oldham, who was living in a beautiful country home on the outskirts of Sanford, with her husband, David, and two children. The genie noticed that I had finished, so he reached for the Magic bottle. I was still a bit hazy from the ordeal that I had just witnessed, but I relinquished the bottle. He vanished as quickly as he had appeared. Slowly I smiled a wee smile, for I knew that the dreams of longtime friends had come true. Prophetess LATAINE OLDHAM
