You have not only been tolerant of our short-comings, hut you have also boosted our mo¬ rale when we needed it most, sacrificing much that we might gain, and willingly helping us in all our problems. Your love and understanding have been ever-present. To you, we should like to express our deepest and most sincere thanks for your faithful co-operation and warm understanding through¬ out our past school years. Your guidance, your leadership, and your determination have enabled us to get the most out of life; your faith and your interest in us are the sweetest memories of our youth. THE SENIORS Senior Class Song Every day that we have worked, All these years that we have tried, Every hour that ive have shirked. Has now made us leave your side; Teachers, parents, friends, so dear — Keep our love locked in your heart. We shall want you always near. For from you we hate to part. Though it may break your heart and mine, The minute when it’s time to go. Remember, friends, each word divine That meant we hate to go. Til we all come back to you, Just the way we are tonight. To this school we will be true, For it is our guiding light. By SYLVIA FIELDS and AUGUSTA HANCOCK Ministration E. B. Mrs. Preston Holt Home Ec. and Social Studies Mrs. Vann Oldham English and French Class Mistory In September, 1942, a group of young students entered Goldston School to begin their long journey on the road from Ignorance to Education. This was not the brightest class that ever entered Miss Grace Burke’s and Mrs. Ollie Garner’s first grades; but, despite this, they were eager to learn, though sometimes they grew lazy and had to be reminded of the task before them. During the following years, under the direction of various teachers, they progressed rapidly and were soon ready to enter the long awaited doors of high school. The gates were opened, and the frightened, hesitant members of the freshman class slowly entered and groped their way through the seeming darkness of those first few weeks of high school; however, dawn broke upon their timid souls as the darkness dwindled into light. They grew accustomed to their new surroundings, their teachers, and their fellow students, the upper classmen. To steer them through this doubtful year, they chose as leaders, Frances Dawson, John Palmer, Sylvia Fields, and Lois Smith. The fall of ’51 found them no longer doubtful and hesitant, but quite sure, almost too sure, of themselves. Not out of necessity, but because of custom, they chose as leaders, Lataine Oldham, Shelby Wicker, and Ronnie Gaines. Ten students— Ronnie Gaines, Eugene Oldham, Shelby Wicker, Lataine Oldham, John Palmer, Jo Ann Yarborough, Jeter Dowdy, Lois Smith, Elvette Mclver, and Erma Gaines—served at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Without-waiting to be asked, they proudly proclaimed, At last, we are Juniors!” Spirit ran high with a determination to give the best Junior-Senior Banquet in the history of Goldston School. They selected ' ' STARDUST” as the theme, with Rev. Scott Poole as after dinner speaker. To supervise and encourage them that year, they selected Shelby Wicker, Augusta Hancock, Lois Smith, Erma Gaines, and Elvette Mclver. That same year, all Juniors who had participated in sports attended the first Athletic Banquet at Goldston with Bones” McKinny as speaker of the evening. Five Juniors acted as marshals with Shelby Wicker, Chief; Lataine Oldham, Erma Gaines, Augusta Hancock, and Mary Meeks. Many Juniors had roles in the Christmas play under the direction of Mrs. Vann Oldham. Made more confident by the success of this undertaking, they began their senior year as a group of happy-go-lucky youths. They chose as leaders for this, the most important year, Sylvia Fields, Mary Meeks, Shirley Burke, Erma Gaines, and Peggy Harris. They presented the Senior play, Cornin’ Round the Mountain,” which everyone seemed to enjoy thoroughly. After this they settled down again to books and lessons, but in their minds were thoughts of the Junior-Senior Banquet, the annuals which were due to arrive in March, their trip, and most of all, Commencement! Now that the end of their high school career is in view, they, the members of the Class of ’54, extend their sincerest appreciation and gratitude to their various teachers and to their principal. They are duly grateful for the guidance that they so willingly gave to prepare this class to face the future with a firm resolution to strive for success in all undertakings. Senior Class Prophecy One day I was wandering around in the attic of the home that my husband and I had rented and found a strange looking object. It resembled a small flower vase. My curiosity was aroused, so 1 picked it up. At my silghtest touch, a small man appeared, as if in a cloud of smoke. He said, I am a genie. Your wish is my command.” This put me to thinking of my classmates of ’54. What could they be doing now? Ten long years had passed since we had last been together. I told the genie my desire and he handed me a long, narrow object that reminded me of a black bottle. He said in his slow, coarse voice, Look into this, my friend, and you shall have your wish.” Slowly taking the magic bottle from his smoky hand, I gazed into it. What I saw really surprised me. I could readily see my classmates whom I had not seen in a long time. First, I saw Sylvia Fields, who was the number one Charleston dancer on the Arthur Godfrey Show. Next, there came Shirley Burke, who was having a time looking after her husband and house full of kids. Looking again, I saw Leonard Barber, completely settled down in his and Shirley’s cozy little house. Ronnie Gaines appeared next. He was the owner of the large chain of Gaines’ Service Stations. Mary Meeks, having speeded up in sewing, was the proud owner of the Meeks’ Sewing School. Wayne Jacobs was really having it easy—sitting back and letting his wife support him. Augusta Hancock was reconciled to a troublesome married life with Ronald Gilliland. Erma Gaines was still trying to hook Billy Scott. Elvette Mclver was playing his harmonica with the Grand Old Oprey.” Shelby Wicker was teaching English in Goldston’s new ultramodern school. John Palmer was directing his own band over Goldston’s new radio station W. N. A. G. Ola Hart, a baby specialist, was in the Siler City Baptist Hospital. Reynolds Mason, a tobacco farmer, was making plenty of money for his wife and six children. Peggy Harris, an Air Force Nurse, was taking care of all the alcoholics and love sick two-timing males. Jeter Dowdy was a math professor at Duke University. Eugene Oldham was trying to publish a geometry book that required no work from the students. It looked as though it were raining, but no, it was only perspiration dripping from Ronald Gillilands face as he was working with his 25,000 chickens. The last one I saw was Lataine Oldham, who was living in a beautiful country home on the outskirts of Sanford, with her husband, David, and two children. The genie noticed that I had finished, so he reached for the Magic bottle. I was still a bit hazy from the ordeal that I had just witnessed, but I relinquished the bottle. He vanished as quickly as he had appeared. Slowly I smiled a wee smile, for I knew that the dreams of longtime friends had come true. Prophetess LATAINE OLDHAM MASCOTS Michael Gaines, Sandra Lee Hammer CLASS POEM Tonight we come to Golds ton High To bid each one of you good-bye.
