FOR NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-TWO Published Under the Direction of PHILLIP GAINES - BILLY CULLIPHER GORDON ELKINS Co-Editors Associate Editor DONALD BARBER Business Manager Presented by THE SENIOR CLASS t)eclica ion MR. CORBETT S. GAINES Mr. C. S. Gaines, now serving as chairman of the Goldston School Board of Education, lias endeared himself to the students of Goldston School. They recognize in him a comrade of youth and a warm friend. As a youth Mr. Gaines accepted Goldston School as his own and has shown his willingness to serve for the continued advancement of the school not only by his generosity but also by his interest in the school’s progress. Students and faculty alike would praise him for his unselfishness, reward his reasonableness and practicality, and know his kindness. To the love and accord that is already his, the Senior Class of 1952 inadequately adds its tribute. PRINCIPAL G. P. CULLIPHER Leader, Teacher, Loyal Friend 3ii tentorium In the fall of 1951. many students were shocked to hear of the death of Miss Louise Womlile. She had been closely associated with Goldston School since her enrollment as a first grade student. She established herself in the hearts of ' the students whom she taught as an up¬ holder of the highest ideals. Siie lent her personality and sober guidance to the molding of children and the general prog¬ ress of the school. Mrs. Milton Garner First Grade Miss Grace Burke Second and First Grade M rs. Just yesterday—those twelve long years! We’ve labored hard, and now it’ s done— Through hopes and fears—it lias been fun ! The path sometimes seemed long and gray, But it’s changed to a brighter day; For with our colors, red and white, Our battle has been lighter to tight. To most of you along the way We owe the joy of this new day, For your kind words and deeds and thoughts Are the main gifts that we have sought. Now, as we are leaving these halls, Loudly every students calls— Oh, memories of work and play, Nothing shall take your charm away! Our hearts swell with joy, thrill and pride, Because you have stood by our side, And, now. whatever life shall send. We ll always love you to the end. C (a Si - J hitor v Often history is considered rather dull, and it seems that each class has only a repetition of facts to offer; however, we seniors of 1952 feel that we have accomplished much. We entered Goldston High School in 1940. The following year Mr. G. P. Cullipher succeeded Mr. W. F. V easey as our principal. We should like to extend thanks to Mrs. Milton Garner, Miss Nina Ferguson, Mrs. Fave C. Moore, Miss Catherine Ward, Miss Louise Womble, Mrs. Mary A. Bar¬ ber, and Mrs. Helen Jeffrey for carefully and patiently guiding us into high school. Twenty-seven of us began high school as Freshmen. We gave the Seniors an “Old Fashioned Garden” style banquet. At the banquet Phillip Gaines gave the toasts to the Seniors; Victoria Moore, to the Guests; Isabelle Campbell, to the Faculty; and Billy Cullipher, to the Waitresses. Class marshals were Lynn Moses, Victoria Moore, Billy Cullipher, Lucy Fields, Isabelle Campbell, and Hal Oldham. Nineteen of us enrolled as Seniors, for we had lost Richard Baker and Lucy Fields. ' KATIE MAE OLDHAM A fitting introduction to the sports’ section of the Gold-Stone is a picture of Kate, Goldston’s ace basketball player and All- Stater. Kate showed her ability to hit the basket immediately upon her arrival in high school four years ago. Every year she has led the team from victory to victory, and thousand s of spectators have thrilled at the sight of her steady aim and agility on the hardwood at Goldston. This year the girls’ basketball team won the Bennett Lions’ Tournament, and the Goldston Lions’ Tournament. Jearline Han¬ cock, Marie Powers, and Katie Oldham will not be on the team next year. So long, girls. It’s been good to know you! GOLDSTON HIGH school id gymnasium CHEERLEADERS Front row: Isabelle Campbell, Naomi Phillips, Jane Tysor. Back row: Betty Johnson, Shirley Jefferies, Chief; Max¬ ine McIntosh. Seated: Gene Causey. Bill Cullipher, Roger McMillan, Donald Barber, Johnny Gaines, Phillip Gaines, Elvette Mclver, John Palmer, Wesley Miller, Manager. Standing: Coach Presnell, Bobby Trogdon, George Beal, Charles Daniels Ernest illette, Joe Thomas, Jerry Oldham, Jackie Miller, Lyn Moses. Goldston’s football team ran many yards to win more fame for Goldston School. The team s success may be attributed in large measure to the fine defensive play by the entire team, while the offense was strong enough to control the ball and keep it from opponents most of the time. The team had great spirit under the efficient coaching of Coach Presnell, which accounts for the fine record made. The squad possessed power, speed, weight, intelligence, experience, no squad dissension, and fighting spirit with a desire to win. The team was made up of five seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, and four freshmen who continuously played hard and clean and performed well as a unit. Next year when the signal to play ball is given, Donald Barber, Phillip Gaines. Roger McMillan, Bill Cullipher, and Lynn Moses will be missed by the team and its football fans. Thanks, Seniors, for doing a good job well; and thanks, Team, for your splendid display of sportsmanship on the football field. G t(U 5 ' .
