COIVIIVIANDING OFFICER Z l Gilbert E. Schmidt Commander US Navy Commander Gilbert E. SCHMIDT was born in Oakland, Cali. fornia in September 1924. After attending high school in Patterson California and Modesto Junior College, Modesto, California, CDl2i SCHMIDT enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve in January 1943, During World War Two CDR SCHMIDT served in the Pacific with the Naval Air Transport Service. ln 1953 he was advanced to Chief Aviation Machinist Mate and participated in an operational evalu- ation of land-based airborne early warning systems in Korea, Subsequently he was ordered to Officer Candidate School and commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in August 1954. CDR SCHMIDT has served sea tours as a gunnery division officer in USS ROCHESTER lCA 124l, Operations officer USS COGSWELL lDD 651l, operations officer for Commander De- stroyer Division 212, operations officer USS LYNDE MCCOR- MICK lDDG 8l, and commanding officer USS GALLANT lMSO 489l. His shore assignments have included duty on the staff of Commander FIRST Fleet, the command and staff course at the Naval War College, and duty in the Strategic Plans and Policy Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Prior to assum- ing command of GOLDSBOROUGH, CDR SCHMIDT was Com- mander of Mine Division SEVENTY-TWO.
