Charles Aycock happily works on a motor at the Industrial Education Center while fellow classmates look on. Learning to be a photographer, Charles Stafford, a D.O. student, is employed by O'Tuel Studio. Gaining Needed Experience Providing opportunities for students to gain the experience, which serves as a means of meeting day-by-day needs, is the main objective of the courses taught in the Vocational Education Program. With a great many advantages to offer, the Department is divided into the following programs: Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Distributive Education, Diversified Occupations, and a new one conducted at the newly formed Industrial Education Center. Students who select courses from these groups are taught numerous things one would not otherwise have received. Only a few of these are selling hints, grooming procedures, civic intelligence, and many physical skills. Mrs. Autery and her students enjoy, quite often, the re- laxation of the li brary. Presently working on a Master's Degree, Mrs. Autery is a graduate of Baylor Uni- versity, where she obtained a B.S. Degree. She joined the GSHS faculty in November, 1959. Mrs. Balkcum, who is presently working toward her Master's, teaches five classes of Sophomore English. She has attended East Carolina College and Long Island Univer- sity. Advising the Reception Committee requires a part of her time. The Director of the Goldmasquers and a teacher of radio and drama, Mr. Britton, received his A.B. Degree after attending East Carolina College and the University of North Carolina. A well-known Senior English teacher, Miss Grant, attended Woman's College, the University of North Carolina, and William and Mary and received her A.B. Degree. She also teaches Creative Writing and U.S. History, but she still finds time to advise the Student Association. A teacher of junior English, five classes a day, is a newcomer to our school, Miss Hatley. She attended Flora MacDonald College and the University of North Carolina. She has obtained her A.B. Degree and is presently working on her Master's. A teacher of junior and Senior English and also US. History, Mrs. Powell, attended Brenau College, the University of North Carolina, and Columbia University and ob- tained her M.S. Degree. Advisor df our Hi-News Staff and teacher of printing and journalism tends to keep Mr. Roberts busy. Mr. Roberts received his M.A. Degree after attending Wake Forest College and various other colleges to do graduate work. Advisor to the junior Class and Latin Club and a teacher of English and Latin tends to require most of Miss Simpson's time. She is .1 graduate of Dulce University and received her A.B. Degree there. Mrs. Ward received her A.B. Degree from Meredith College. A teacher of Sophomore English, she joined the faculty in 1957.
