In the dignity of the noblest sense he has guided, encouraged, and instructed us by his example. A gift of spirit on his part which, in countless ways, aged the stu- dent in the quest for learning and good citizenship, has meant throughout the years a greater Goldsboro City School System. With respect and gratitude so rightfully his, we dedicate this 1957 Gohisca to Mr. Ray Arm- strong. lm- W V -Y4 ---main -- Kzfnfenfs Sclzalastic Activities Orgaizizatims Athletics Advartising Classes Marshals Faculty Superlatives Stunt Night Socials Publications S.A. To the Members of the Senior Class of l957: Please let me congratulate you on attaining this hiqh peak in your search for the truth. Do not feel that you have arrived. There is much more ahead. You are now in a position to begin to learn some of the great which have been arranged for you by those who have gone before you. You will be asked many times during the next few years about your formal high school training. We hope you will give answers that will compel your younger brothers and sisters to strive even harder than you have in this business of growing up. The world today demands young men and women who are prepared to do something and do it well. Push on to higher goals. The best is yet to come! Hass History Four years ago we had our first look at GHS, and that year as Freshmen we par- ticipated in Stunt Night with our Dennis the Menace theme. Though our stunt didn't win, we felt proud of our first class-wide project. Our Sophomore year we met with better success and won the coveted Stunt Night with our portrayal of Julius Caesar. As a special treat for the seniors, we took them on a visit to Fantasy Land via our junior-Senior. Everything was strictly according to that wonderland, even the cotton candy trees, the peppermint flowers and the lollipop shrubs. Of course our Senior Year was filled with the necessary order blanks for calling cards and invitations, but we still found time to work on Stunt Night and again came up with an original and entertaining theme. As we slowly walk from the doors of GHS, we seem to realize all at once that, truly, the most wonderful days of our life are slowly coming to an end, and that the more serious days are ahead. Years from now as we look back and recall the happiest moments of our lives, GHS and the classmates of '57 will be among our fondest memories. 611155 Advisvr Many thanks to the advisor of the class of 1957, Mrs. Esther Lee Cox Irby, who was an ever present help to us throughout our final year at GHS. Her job was most certainly not an easy one and many were the times she worried over a stray pansy plant, an unbalanced invitation order or a last minute Stunt Night theme. It was only with her help and guidance that the class of '57 became a class to be remembered in the halls of GHS. -237 i il ll l I,i ir 4. l l l l l l z l I. l I l I i i I , i l 'i ,. i I I I ll! li li ai l 1 l I ! l 5 fl E1 l . i . ..-,AL -v -e.r.,.n.'..z:.4.-,Lew- -,.x.1.,.-. ..,. ..,. ,v....,.,,....--,..e .v.. . .,-,v,,., , , 616155 of I 95 7 I Kms Song 67010149 QTune: When Irish Eyes Are Smilingj Red and White We're the flair of '57 0 - - f dear old G.H.S. Z9 aphecy New York's Bowery February 4, 1965 As I sit here on the curbstone, smoking my two cent cee-gar and looking about me at the limited scenes of Skidrow, I can't help but think back to those dear carefree, careless days with my 1957 classmates at good ole G.H.S. Being Queen of the Bums, I seldom have a chance to associate with those I knew then, but in many ways I keep up with them. For instance, the other day my bare foot and the pavement got a little foo close to each other, and so I picked a newspaper up from the gutter to patch my shoe with and who should I see right in the front page picture? Why that famous game hunter Paul ''Get-emfbefore-they-get-you'' Grantham. He had just returned from a trip to deepest Africa and brought back a few rare animals. Accompanying P. A. on the trip were Bob Haskins fwho was Chief Safari Foremanj, Bobby Bizzell who was Chief Scout, since he had such a good view from his now 7 foot 6 inch heightj, and Pete jarrell Qwho was Chief Wardrobe Man, and who personally clothed all the natives from his own bountiful closetj. As my eyes scanned the page, my attention was drawn to a story headlined Girl Finally Gets Man, and who should that story be about but Agnes Lawler and Lloyd Gurleyl According to the paper, Lloyd invented the world's first atomic powered razor for use in Agnes's barber shop, and then skipped the country before telling Aggie the formula- for making it work just right. In the meantime, she had accidentally mowed down H. B. Carter, Malcolm Blackman, and Reba Grice. Flipping over to the society page, I read about a gala fete held at the White House last week-end, in honor of Lenora Pate, ambassadoress to Lower Slobbovia. Many dig- nitaries attended including Secretary of Deterior, Mary Bea Heeden, Secretary of the Secretary of Deterior, Dorsett Clement, Vice President of the U. S., Roy Savage, and his songstress friend, Betty jean Williams, and of course President and Mrs. Tom Strickland. Mary Frances johnson was caterer for the affair. Further down the page I noted the hospital news which stated the admittance of jill Game. jill was diced up into bite-sized pieces while trying to teach Macbeth to the natives of the Congo. In spite of the suggestion that they leave her in her present state f2,629 bite-size piecesj and let her spend the rest of her life on a Chinese Checker Board, jill is valiantly trying to pull herself together. Turning the page, I noticed an advertisement of a forthcoming movie This South of Mine, co-starring Colonel Tommy Brown, Esq., and that famous screen beauty, Billy Herring. The fine print at the bottom of the ad stated that ushers for the two performances would be Sheila Edwards, Cornelia Hales, Geraldine Potter, and Raymond Allen, while popcorn would be sold by Dannie Ruth MacDonald. jackie Howell was to sell the salt. Also, at the very bottom, extremely small print said This ad was sold by Jane-I-Iic-Smith, business manager of almost anything. The editorial page carried three fine editorials, the first dealing with the Hendersonian Institute which recently opened in Washington, D. C. john Henderson, former Class of '57 mate, opened it as an outlet for all the many wrestling trophies he has received throughout these last few years. Special tribute was given to chief trophy polisher, Pudgie Farmer, who keeps all the brass shining. The second editorial remarked about the extremely high taxes of today. Many people it said, would doubtlessly hold back their money, if it weren't for the head of the tax department, Patsy Sasser, who always could get money from anybody. The last editorial on the page commended Goldsboro business woman Carolyn Rollins who is making such a name for herself in the manufacturing world. For those of you who haven't kept up with the business scene, Carolyn makes and sells wax candles for use in N.H.S. tappings. She is really making a hit since she has finally found a way to prevent those who are tapped from being singed or scalded by dripping candle wax. Scanning the sports page I read Bill's Build-up, a column by Giant Boddie, and learned that the two top pro-basketball teams in the U. S. were about to clash for the Championship. Bill Moore, captain of one of the teams, seemed pretty confident since his manager, Bill Allen QHajiej had hired a few of his followers to be scorekeepers and timekeepers. Bruce Lucas, captain of the other team, felt that his team would have Iittle'chance to win, were it not for the grand support of his private cheering squad, led by Edith Bell. Turning to the International News, I saw that Nicky Kopp had sent his private plane over from Rouen, France, to the states in order to fly a few of his classmates from G.H.S. over for his graduation party. From all accounts it seemed that everyone who attended had a wonderful time. It seems as if every one in my class has done well for themselves-everyone except me. I think I shall go to see Dr. Vfilliam George Crawford tomorrow, and be psychoanalyzed. He's helped so many down-and-outers, perhaps there is hope for me too! Until we meet again, here's wishing you the best of luck in all you do. bn, FK sm f -ann-Q Ta AF ax jg., ass..-4-ww .Y QA ,,,-, .1-'-' H. A f U!UNl0R' Sfmo , 2-My f. MY FIFTEEN YEARS WITH THE GOLDMASQUERS Clifton Britton This year marks my fifteenth year with the Goldmasquers, an organization that has won for itself a national reputation. These years will probably be the richest in my life. NY'ithin that period of time I have worked with more than three thousand students. Some have gone into the professional field of radio and dramatic art, others are still in college preparing themselves for the vocation of their choice. Some have given their lives for the rights of freedom. There were many who were never confident in themselves. They were afraid of life and the future. They did not want to face the real issue. In my own way I tried to make them a part of the high school theatre. They needed something to do that would make them successful before the eyes of their fellow students. They found their confidence in painting a flat or speaking a line in front of an audience and hearing someone say, that was goodf' Those words gave them the courage to fight for what they believed. In a fast moving age the public is prone to publicize the wrongs of youth more than what they do right. Sometimes it becomes rather difficult for them to decide which gives them more at- tention. There were those who were timid and afraid. The timid soon learned that he had a voice that would be heard when the cue was given. Democracy thrives on free speech. Each person should be so trained to add his to the great chorus of freedom. Those who were afraid found that fear could be conquered by- driving themselves to forge ahead despite the barriers which held them back. The arts have never thrived under the pressure of fear. It destroys rather than creates. Many times after rehearsal there would be some visiting youngster who would shyly come up and ask can you discover men? This young life wanted to be known. She had a secret desire to do something that would put her name among those who were remembered after graduation. After many hours of thinking I would be fortunate to find a way to discover her. Sometimes these ideas surely come from God. The world today must discover its youth and find that deeply hidden desire of what they want to be. If it is not recognized and cultivated, it will die or grow up the wrong way. Of course there are those in every theatre group called Glory Seekers. These people only work when they have a place under the bright lights. With the Goldmasquers, they soon learn that the true glory is working in the shadows of the side-wings helping another attain success. They discover the value of a new friend and the strength of unity. Soon they learn that scrubbing the stage floor reflects pride and glory of a great people. Success is only attained by hard work and climbing the ladder from the first round. Far too many are pushed up rather than earning it. For fifteen years I have seen them play the roles of the American soldier in prison camps defending our heritage, and I have seen them play the roles of kings and queens for an evening, giving it the nobility of just rulers. They have lived through the period in which Our Lord was born, and suffered the last crucial hours-with Him at the cross. In these moments they are not wasting their time but learning by living. In the hours of despair, the memory of one being a king or a soldier defending his country can restore faith and give confidence. My fifteen years with the Goldmasquers introduced me to johnny, Sue and Bob. They have given me a rich, full life. l ' 436 ff' x 4v 'lLi 4, - -s an fb. k X I 'G 'filqff-'WS X ?,,A.,-Hx. .Q: 5f,4.
