We leave anything in the condition to be dedicated or given to the less fortunate and minor characters of Goldsboro l-ligh School, Article I To the faculty, because they loved us so, we leave a bottle of soothing PEPTO- BISMAL to take for the bereavement which they will feel when we leave. Article ll To the rising Seniors we 'leave our class spirit that has achieved for us the highest honors in everything, particularly the magazine drive and stunt night. Article Ill To the rising Juniors we give our exceedingly high Intelligence Quotient and our amazing ability to get along perfectly with the teachers Article lV We gladly donate part of our dignity, reserved manner, and sophistication to the rising Sophomores. lWe have so much they could not use it alll Article V l tem 1 l, Jackie Smith donates her Southern drawl to Vicky il love all lvlANkindl Kershaw. 2. Jesse Ray Daughtry awards Dick Combs his experienced skill in learning English without studying. 3. Carolynne Harwell leaves her bottle of Black Noreen hair dye to that lovely Albino Peggy Roberts. 4, Janet Stanton leaves her worn out two-way stretch what-cha-call-it that was left to her last year to Patsy Jenkins. 5. Martha Wallace leaves her ability to enjoy her own jokes to Bobby Royall. 6. Clifton Sneeden assigns his speed in getting dressed and undressed at football practice to Squeaky Frazier. 7A Wilbur Creech leaves his musical talent to the Gene Krupa of '56 Tom Rose. 8 Roy James assigns his sorriness, laziness, slowness, and ability to bum a cig to Jimmy Pearson. To Elizabeth Davis, Catherine Raper loans her parking place by the band house hoping she won't get into trouble for parking in the wrong place. Jo Ann Williams leaves her place as head maiorette to anyone tall enough to see over Lewis Sutton's head. Herbert Hill leaves Barbara Godwin-but not for longl Bobby Johnson leaves his fsolid hickory number i8 cue stick to Jimmy Askins. James lRedl Carter bequeaths his miraculous power to blush to Alyene Smith. Kitty Brown and Emily Newman sacrifice their broken and false teeth to lvlri Twiford, who may need any kind he can get before long. Paul Magill leaves his place in Anthony's radio room to Tommy Hines, hoping he will continue the fine record of breaking everything sent to be repaired. Julia Ann Jones leaves her wise and other-wise actions to Barbara Bridgers. Durwood Wiggins leaves to do his BEST to join a red headed alumna, Betty Ann Lewis leaves, hoping to find something better. Pete Malpass hands out nothing. He's taking Four-foot with himl Laverne Kleinert leaves her silver flute to that pretty Newbould girl in hopes that she will tooth it in memory of the best section in the G. H. S. Band. The great lovers, Jimmy Bradley and Alton Ward, leave Hillcrest' Drive- lt's posted. Harold O'Tuel, the great orator, is fortunate enough to inherit Paul Glisson's be-bop and Shirley Shrago's smile. Barbara Bagwell leaves her out-of-town connections to Hazel Watson, Pete Evans leaves his ingenious facility for taking pictures without any film to all enterprising young photographers. Dorothy Dail leaves her quiet and unassuming manners to Katherine Harrell. Edward Caviness, State Tennis Champion, leaves his form and physique to the great Billy Walker. Betty Bryan leaves her seat in LJ. S, History to anyone who has the unusual luck of making 5's. Harry Morris hopes to leave his ignorance to Billy Brock who doesn't have any. Nancy Holland parts tearfully with l99 8f9 pounds for Barbara Britt, who needs a little extra weight. And lastly, the whole Senior Class wishes to leave precious memories to future generations of Goldsboro High School. PRUPHECY As the sun pulls away from the shore and our boat sinks slowly in the west, we approach the island of Manhattan. As we leave the ship, clutching tightly our Foreign Legion discharge papers and mumbling gibberish to each other, iEgad, what ten years in the desert can doli who should we see but an old friend, Prohibition candidate for president, Snyder iOlla Rayl Pate and his assistant, Happy lLiquid Dieti Smith, kissing babies on the dock. He invites us to stay and listen to his temperance rally. Having some time to kill before attending Snyder's Alcoholics Unanimous meeting, we wander into a movie. We notice that it's featuring Making Mush in the Moonlight, but not until we get inside do we connect this with Valentino Gurley and Jargon Jinnette, who seem to be starring. Sixteen torrid kisses and thirty-three warm, lingering embraces later, we stagger out. Cn the street we meet Rear Admiral lno wising off nowi James Potter, just in from commanding the USS. lvory. After a brief conversation, limited to adverbial objectives, he informs us that the best way to find out what good show is playing at the James is to buy a newspaper. We hoist one from the nearest news stand and there, staring us in the face in big red letters, is a headline and a slightly censored photograph of Shirley iShimmyi Shrago, who in a recent popularity contest, it says, came out ahead of money. lt seems she has sworn out a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon against Leroy lBinocularsl Strickland. He has reportedly been sitting on the front row with a rubber band and an evening's supply of staples. lt goes on to state that Miss Shrago may be seen nightly in her -uh-act on top of Kitty Brown's piano in Al's Hash House. Further on down the page we see that Gorgeous George Hill meets Masked lthank goodnessi Ellis in the TV wrestling bout of the century. tHow do they have one of these every week?l Further more, it says, at the ringside wi-ll be Mealy-mouth Dupree representing Radio City lpopcorn standi, Feeling faint, we look for a water hole, Seeing one in the middle of the street, we cross over, take off the iron cover, and who should look up at us but Morris Conekin, Ph. C. G. lPhloating Crap Gamel. He invites us in. Two hours later, poorer but wiser, we continue on our way. Still scanning the paper, we see that Emily Newman, star of North Atlantic, has gone crazy trying to reach Ab above high C, and that Janet Stanton, kindergarten teacher, was fired for teaching minors what even majors shouldn't know. Tch-tch-tch. We are now passing a small establishment run by J. Bradley, professional basketball star, according to the sign, Going in, we find that he has now reached the astounding height of 7 feet 3 inches. We couldn't stop, since we wanted to go to the Met, where, according to the posters, Mario Glisson is playing opposite Dorothy Dail. From the theatrical section of the paper, we see a nasty rumor that she is about to be fired for shaking plaster off the back wall with the power of her tre- mendous bass voice. The tickets to the Met take the last of our shekels lEgadl-The things they pay you within the Foreign Legion-oh, well, last week it was quetzelsl. We struggle out to the edge of town and sit down to await a ride. The blue streak which stopslong enough to pick us up was a Perkle B chauffeured by Elwood Batten. While huddled on the floor behind the seat, we finish off our trusty paper with the rest of the thaetrical section. Donald Montague, it seems, directs the Lost Colony, having completed his class in pencil-rolling with honors. One last, back page squib informs us that Roy James, Nuclear Physicist, has developed a method for splitting the atom with your bare hands and a nut cracker. As we roll the last cigarette from the sports page, the blue streak screeches to a halt and Elwood's patented back-seat ejector kicks us out the side window. Each of us makes a beautiful three-point landing-two knees and a nose-on the sidewalk in front of Johnson's Medicated Pool Hall. Striding in fto get a glass of milkl, we find the owner seated in the back chalking cues under his favorite work of art-a calendar picture of Carolynne Harwell. Staggering out the back door, we notice that the alley is papered with posters from Stinkling Bros., Burnup and Bailum Circus advertising Bobby Cousins as the midget. fl-le must have lied about his heightl Another poster advertises an appear- ance of Miss Susan Campbell, Miss Raw Tomato of l968, l-lmmml We decide to walk out to see the old alma mutter. At the school we find Ernest still trying to pass English but he makes O'es in Miss lpock's room since he proved that all angles are right angles. A little further down the hall we open the darkroom door and are greeted by a scream of anguish. lt is Pete Evans trying to improve his .087 developing average. Followed by coarse language, we dash back up the hall. Louis Marriner is in the art room putting another coat on the Sistine Madonna. Melvin Sauls is in room 20 presiding over a N, l-l. S. Meeting. GULDMASQUERS il ISTURY We stand here in the stilled hush of the auditorium to sing, for perhaps the last time, our class song. Clutched in our hands are the sheepskin parchments for which we have worked for so many years. lt doesn't seem possible that soon all we will have left of Goldsboro High School will be a memory. Thewords are clear and the realization of their meaning bring a smile to our lips and a tear to our e es. Y The halls of dear ole Goldsboro High, will always ring with memories, Of all the happy hours we've spent, of many schoolmates laughter. How true, these echoing phrases, we'll forever have a score of happy recollections to brighten life's journey. Our thoughts steal back to that first cloudy September morning when we, the greatest freshmen, first walked beneath those massive portals and glancing up glimpsed the words, Goldsboro High School. This was our new home-here we would laugh, cry, work, play, win, lose, and spend the four most important years of our lives. We'll never forget the freshman-week held in our honor, wearing those awful clothes, counting the bricks in the building. We'll always remember the feeling that overcame us, when with our first quarter reports, and everybody groaning, we realized that we had become an accepted part of the student family. By Christmas we had formed class committees and had our first swim in the busy tide of Student Association activities. Then with Valentines day we all chipped in and produced School Days as our contribution to Stunt Night. Quo Vadis, in all its splendor, will never surpass this tale of Pole- cassy Creek, with its spit balls and joyful hilarity, Bursting with pride, we took second place, to make our motto a near actuality, To strive for victory and accept not defeat. We worked that year, we attained high ideals and goals, and best of all, we made friends among our superiors, the upperclassmen. Exam time hit us in the face and we knew what it was to cram, to fail, to pass-whewl lf ever there were silly sophomores, it was us. lt was a year of fun beginning with a football sea- son in the new stadium, a gift of the touchdown club. Many of us faced the footlights with the Gold- mascjuers, some of us broke into Varsity Sports. There was Stunt Night again, Vaudeville Reminis- cences, and we took second place for the second time. Our can-can girls were the talk of the school for weeks. Easter came with its holidays and we gave our unforgettable Easter program, proclaimed by many as the most effective one ever presented. Graduation time and we were impressively handed the Ivy Chain to become jolly juniors. What a junior year: Our Christmas program, Christmas in Many Lands , Stunt Night, and our Mountaineer Feud, a very pleasant memory. ln Angel Street, our junior class play, we truly scored a victory. Amidst the play of razor blades and terrifying suspense, we raised enough money for the crowning event of our junior year, the junior-senior. And if there ever was a superb prom, it was ours. The old southern mansion, the moss covered ceiling, the rock wall covered with flowers, these trans- forming the gym into a southern plantation for one marvelous evening. Prior to this, were hours spent in planning and cultivating our ideas, debates over the issue of where to have the hop, the old gym or our brand new one. And the time spent in preparing the strawberry parfait and mint juleps. Who'll evegforget our program, with its colorful dances and songs? Yes, we were proud of our first accom- plis ment. Then as time sped along on its merry way we awoke one morning and found we were seniors. Just one year, the Autumn wind seemed to whisper, and every hurrying minuet was packed with felicity. Remember those nights spent in the attic working on the annual, and the way we flashed the beautiful new class rings. Suddenly, our senior class play and the senior stunt night were only memo- rious occasions. Prom time once more, and now we were the guests of honor at the junior-senior. The last quarter was upon us and we settled down with books trying hard. to reach that 2-aver- age for exam exemption. Our previously, ordered invitations came and we paid for caps and gowns, and diplomas, for Commencement time was near. Soon our i953 Gohiscas arrived and we had a busy combination of signing yearbooks, and learning to march to Pomp and Circumstancef' Class Day at Tuscarora, Baccalaureate sermon, and finally tonight came. There go the strains of the second verse, bringing us rapidly back to the present. Our rose will never wither, though hardships may sustain, And in the end we all shall see, our work was not in vain. We hate to leave all this, so much a part of what we are and will be. Yet, time must march on and we must seek greater goals. Oh, class of l9'53, let's keep our banners raised, We'Il always reach for higher goals, dear G. H. S. be praised. Tomorrow the halls will be silent, tomorrow we will be men and women facing the future. We lift our heads high for the last walk up these aisles. And so goodby, until we meet again . . . 3 5!
