Testator: Max Epstein Witnessed: Clifton Britton John Culloty IUII CLASS PIIIIPIIIIIIY Abou Ben Culloty, may his tribe increase, Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace. And saw within the gloom of his room so cold, Old Madam Morris writing in a book of gold. He asked, What are you writing in that book of thine? She replied, The future of the class of '49. He looked over her shoulder into this book of gold, And saw there the future written in letters bold. He was at first awed, then curiosity took hold. He wondered how in words the future could be told. And the Madam said, You too, in the ways of the future can be wise. Come closer boy, much closer, now gaze into my eyes. As I looked into her eyes, I had the vague feeling that I was being watched. Then all of a sudden I was engulfed in a cloud. As the cloud dispersed, I looked for Madam Morris-but she was gone. As I looked around the room and saw no one else there, I came to the conclusion that I was alone. My eyes casually crossed the room-then I casually crossed the room and picked them up. It was a double- cross. As I straightened up, I noticed a man staring at me. Gracious to Betsy, what 'kind of man is this? He had a suit with very wide shoulders and slim hips. It was a one piece iob, seamless, buttonless, and completely devoid of a collar. It was all white and as I looked closer I saw a label with letters on it, B.V.D. Hm-m-m, they must be his initials, Taking a better look at him, I had the strange feeling, that I looked like him, but it couldn't be me. Besides this man was at least forty years old. As I raised my hand to my mouth, the man did the same thing. Oh, No! It couldn't be, but it was! I was looking into a mirror. Looking at the desk, I saw the clock and noting that the big hand pointed at 3:00 and the little one at II:OO, I immediately deduced that it was the year I969. How did I come to that conclusion? That's a good question! Being confused I decided that the best thing for me was a breath of fresh air. After leaving the building, I received the first of a series of shocks I was to get. As I stepped off the curb, I was almost knocked over by an under fed 300 pound giant. I looked at him and at a second glance I recognized him as Lovelace, Lovelace Bell and he was cleaning the streets, and with, above all things a whisk broom. He must have taken me seriously, when while playing with the 'Quakes in '48 and having lost four straight games, I told him to do something even if he had to clean it up. After talking awhile the conversation naturally drifted around to the old gang-the Class of '49, I mean. Love said that some of them were still kicking around Goldsboro, but most of them were scat- tered throughout the country and some even in foreign lands. He said that Annette Edgerton had tak- en Clum's job as proprietor of the Opera Shoppe, and was doing very nicely. She's a BIG help to the city. Well, she's a help, anyway she's big! Chief soda ierk at the Old Shoppe is Dot Crawford. Mr. Walter Barwick, proprietor of the Goldsboro Cigar Store, has recently made an addition to his staff of employees, in the person of Jim Belote, who is assistant to the rack boy, succeeding Alvin Joyner, who is now head rack boy. They say Bobby Man O'War Gillikin is doing pretty good now. His trainer, Howard Caudill, and Mrs. Gillikin, the former Lib Handley, are planning on entering him in the Kentucky Derby this year. Jack Rose and his wife, the former .lean Daughtry, have just announced the birth of their fourth set of twins. This makes a grand total of fourteen. lTwo more and they'lI have enough to graduate.I The Honorable Isaac lFrank Daill Braxton Mayor of Goldsboro iust told Police Chief Brown-Nose was brought in two syears ago on charges of neck.ess driving . . . I5 cents is entirely too much to pay Mary Bumgarner had iust finished her second term as Principal of Dudley High School. Taking in a little rural life we find out that Rudolph Alexander is Mayor of Belfast. Betty Hollo- well is his secretary-in-chief. Jimmy Purser has just been promoted to Superintendent of the N. C. State Hospital for the Colored Insane. Lucky Jim, not a dull moment out there! Fulghum, to release Dana James Gulley, who by the way, has iust divorced her fourth husband. She I decided I would like to know more about the old gang, so I went to Greene Hollowell's Fruit and Nut Stand where Tommy Beamon, Assistant Manager in charge of fruits, was working hard, as usual. I bought a paper and looked at the first page. In big letters, I read that Jerry Sandford, pro- minent resident of Harlem, had iust published his last play, a mystery thriller- Who Broke the Fruit Bowl? David Holder is a well known blow for pay man now-he plays first trombone in Ray Bryan's band- The Merry Music Makers. Mary Gray Hollowell models gownless evening straps at Mademoiselle Bagley's Bargain Base- ment on Berkshire Boulevard in Boston. CBaby!l Reginald Griffin has his own radio show now on WLARD. This show is called The Thinner Man. His program is sponsored by Sutton's Syncopating SaspirilIas. Cotton Kluttz has just been interviewed by Associated Press newsmen. He is the Geek for Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. Cotton's favorite song is, I Get the Neck of the Chick- en and his favorite book is Chicken Every Sunday. Mike lCheckerheadl Pate is on the Olympic Checker team which goes into action next year at Lower Slovobia, the host-country to the olympiad. lncidentally Victor Herring is Emperor of Lower Slovobia, Lewis Bryan is his chief Advisor. Audrey Garris has her own Shmoo farm in the San Fernando Valley. Her chief source of income is Wild Bill Elliott who runs a Shmooburger Stand in Los Angeles. Lt. Commander Jimmy Lewis is now stationed in the North Atlantic region. He ioined in '49 right after graduation. Professor Jack Shine, of Paris, is now teaching French at Dix Hill. Judy Adams may be seen, at any time for the next six weeks, at the Palace Theatre playing the lead in Bennette Daughtry's new gala production, Life Without Father. Guess who's the Stage Mana- ger for this production. Yep! You guessed it. Nous Devez Wigginsl. Bobby McLamb can be seen co-starred with Lon Chaney in Finklestein, Grandson of Franken- stein. A Pete Jones Specialty. Graham Best, Attorney-at-Law, in New York, finally won a case, the first in fifteen years. He won a case of Four Petunia's at a raffle at the EIk's Club. Norwood Bizzell is making a small fortune with his flea circus. Norwood's chief source of fleas is from Al Wallace, better known as Bugs. Sonny Godwin, director of Acrobatics, at Shaw University, has just published his fourth novel, Forever Lumber Just as I got through reading the article about Professor Godwin the paper blew from my hands and I was again engulfed in that same strange cloud I fell into my normal state of unconsciousness lamas instead of a one piece suit and Madam Morris was also gone But out of my strange adventure I salvaged one thing the future of the Class of 49. H. S. to begin to moke our mork in its history. But only yesterdoy wos four yeors ogo ond we found thot going from scored Freshmen to sophisticoted Seniors wos not occomplished in Four Eosy Lessons. But, with oble leodership, the les- sons, though not eosy, hove been extremely voluoble. Cotton Kluttz led our council os we begon to grope our woy with unsteody steps toword our gool. Vice-President, Ervin Stricklond, Secretory, Ruby Forehond, Treosurer, Ethel Porks, ond ci firm hond from llo Moe Roebuck, Advisor, helped to smooth the rough going. Joyce Bagley ond Sonny Goiney nimbly led us os our cheerleoders os we begon to moke our voices heord in Goldsboro High School. It wos during this yeor thot we chose our motto, Seize Your Opportunity, ond individuol- ly os well os together, we hove been doing just thot. We were off to o good stort os we begon our Sophomore yeor in G. H. S. We looked to Monnie Bernstein for leodership os our President, ond with help from Roy Bryon, Vice-President, Judy Adoms, Secretory, Jerry Worrell, Treosurer, ond lno Mixon ond Geraldine Jones os Advisors, our yeor proved to be quite o success. Dot Crowford ond Hermon Vinson were our cheerleaders. At the beginning of our Sophomore yeor we completed ond odopted our constitution. This ciided us toword 0 very progressive yeorj ' Low funds in the treOSury led to the sponsoring of the movie, KlDNAPPED, given to the stu- dent body. Loter on, the proceeds from the movie were used for o closs picnic ot Comp Tuscororo. New tolent wos discovered in our closs cis occording to trodition, we presented the onnuol Eos- ter progrom. This wos the lost proiect of our Sophomore yeor, but our eyes were glued to new horizons os we prepored to become Jolly Juniors. October l3, i947 found the class of '49 undertoking their first profect os Juniors. Yes, thot wos the opening dote of the Curtis mogozine drive. The gool of two thousond dollors wos set ond with strong determinotion ond unity, we possed our gool by S3lO.5O. Howord Coudill, President, Jer- ry Sondford, Vice-President, Bennette Doughtry, Secretory, Kenneth Fulghum, Treosurer, together with Jonie Ipock ond Eleonor Simpson, Advisors blended their efforts in order to help leod us in ca stroight poth towcird our gool. Not to be forgotten ore Bessie Culbreth ond Mox Epstein, the cheerleoders for our Junior yeor. Neorly everyone who enters high school looks forword to his Junior ploy ond we were no dif- ferent. With opt thought we plonned o Junior Week to precede the ploy, the moin reoson being the odvertising odvontoge it offords. In on ossembly ot the beginning of the week, the lviorshcils for T948-49 were nomed ond os o climox to Junior Week, we proudly presented Brief Condle in collo- borotion with the Goldmosquers. Alwoys in the memory of our Junior yeor, will be the Junior-Senior donce. It wos o symbol of much work, but lots of fun. Seniors-my how the yeors hove flown! Our time wos short os we begcin our Senior yeor with strength in unity ond determinoition. We knew thot the yeor wouldn't be eosy ond copoble leodership wos imperotive so we chose the following os our officers-Bill Elliott, President, Kenneth Fulghum, Vice-President, Betty Hollowell, Secretory, Jimmy Purser, Treosurer, ond Cheerleoders Anne Lee ond Greene Hollowell. Clifton Brit- ton ond Corolyn Longston were responsible for the excellent guidonce os Advisors. The onnuol wos the number one undertoking os seniors but the usuol determinotion wos present os we prepored to do the usuol job well done. Groduotion time come before we reolized it ond the four glorious yeors of high school ore ot on end but the Closs of '49 does not end with this. We hove left the mcirk of love ond loyolty to the posterity of G. H.
