E'Wr'rebsi'er Foreword I, the Timberwolf and mascot of G. H. 8., take this opportunity to introduce to you a glimpse of our life at school during the past year. As you glance through these pages, may you forget all the tedious hours of study, the tough exams, and the disappointing grades. May you remember only the fun you had, the fellowship enjoyed, and just a little of What you learned. Dedication There is one soul Who has wholeheartedly served G; H. S. He has led us through Victories and defeats. None has worked harder for the glory of the' school. None has been happier over the successes and triumphs of the students. Therefore, in deep appreciation for his work of many years, I now dedicate this annual to myself-the Timberwolf. e... k Annual Staff Editor J anice Spalding Assistant Editor J oyce Wolverton Business Manager .................................................................... Class colors: Blue and white. Dazed, dumbfounded, wondering What everything was all about, we staggered through our initiation into our first year of high school. Our only social function was the Return Mixer. Officers were: President, Al Wilke; Vice President, Calvin DeMaris; Secretary, Shirley Hansen; Treasurer, Pauline Rauscher. Beginning to see our way through the haze in this, our Sophomore year, we looked about us and started taking an interest in the affairs of G. H. S. Presiding officers were: President, Charles Conlee; Vice President, Michael Mallon; Secretary, Calvin DcMaris; Treasurer, Janice Spalding. We were really in full swing our Junior year. Being, oh so very original, we had a variety show for our play and ttHIeaventt as the theme for the prom. Class officers were: President, Dorothy Hoctor; Vice President, J ack Davenport; Secretary, Marion Beers; Treasurer, Walter Smith. . Fullfledged big wigs we really made things Whirl. We produced ttGrowing Pams for our play and turned festive with Latin America as the theme for our ball. CAMERA SHY-Edgar Freer-ttSehsible men never talk. Richard Riches-Class Play 3. Class Prophecq As I look into the crystal ball of the future, reflecting the actions of the Senior Class in 1945, many amazing scenes are reeled before my eyes. Bombs bursting over the island and flak racing Skyward shows that the action is taking place in the thick of the war. I see an American plane viciously fighting off an attack by five Jap Zeros. Three of the Zeros are sent flaming earthward within a split second. The foutth is hit and its crew is sent to join their ancestors. The fifth limps home with its tail be- tween its legs, but not before it sends a bullet into the American planeis gas tank. Driven out of control the planets crewaconsisting of CHARLIE SWAN, tail gunner, IRVIN HUNTER, bombardier, and LELAND MCDONALD, navigator, under the command of Navy Lieutenant, BILL McCARDEprarachute to safety on the out- skirts of a Yank hospital and supply base. As they land with few minor casualtles, Corporal J IM LAYMAN, ambulance driver with Red Cross nurses MARION BEERS and GRACE LEE, rush the crew to the Emergency Hospital. It is under the skilled direction of Dr. RUTH WOLVERTON who, assisted by Cadet Nurse SHIRLEY HANSEN, is at the time performing an operation on P.F.C. ALFRED WILKE for a brain tumor. MARION BEERS falls for the young lieutenant and drags him off to Chaplain PEGGY HUNTER who performs the sacred marriage ceremony. Private VIRGIL ANDERSON, being a more serious case than the emergency hospital can handle, is flown to an Army hospital in China. He is suffering from octarnaloritis received when he kicked an unsuspecting Jap who had cunningly concealed a revolver in his hip pocket. His suffering will be temporarily relieved by the sweet talk of the dashing air hostess, LOUISE BIGGS. A welcome sight to the servicemen is the Red Cross mess truck driven by CHARLES LENOIR. BETTY GROVES and BETTY SCOTT work themselves to death passing out coffee and doughnuts. CLIFF WILSON repairs the flat tire with the help of a cute little W.A.C., JANICE SPALDING, who changes the tire while CLIFF hands her the bolts. Up in the radio tower are three W.A.V.E.S.-PAULINE RAUSCHER, MARION LEDFORD and MARGARET SELLERS. MARION, at her field glasses scans the horizon and excitedly reports sighting a rubber life raft. MARGARET SELLERS phones in the report to headquarters while PAULINE, getting so excited at the prospect of seeing some new men, falls from the tower and snage her nylons. Dirty and unshaven, RAY' GOSNEY, DEAN BRADSTREET, DICK RICHES and JERRY MILLER climb out of the lifeboat after thirty days without even seeing a female! The scene shifts back to the good 01, USA. and centers on the Lockheed and Vega Aircraft Plant. VERYL RILEY has worked up to executive and iuns the whole business her own way with the advice of her assistant, DOROTHY HOCTOR. Working on her fifth P-38 for the day is chief riveter MAXINE DRURY. She is re- lieved bylfthe original ttslacks girl? MAXINE BINNS, ready to take over for the swing sh' t. ' Private Detective DICK ELWOOD has hired himself out to the satisfaction of L. and V. to detect any impairs or signs of saboteurs at work. LOUISE MCKINNEY and MAXINE ZIELINSKI, unable to enlist because of wgrgsdependents under 18 years of age, give up their beloved dogs to join the LeROY WHITEHILL, up to his old tricks, passes to all the war workers, circu- lars on post-war reconstruction entitled the iiSimcoe Pupis Pupis Woof? October 8, -15, 22, 26 and November 5, 11 came and went, but 0 the victory was not repeated. All of us like to rationalize our defeats, and so do I. So I say that our unexpected streak of losing was due to the fact that the team consisted mostly of greenhorns. Then, too, several prominent members of the team dropped cute some to the army and some for other reasons. This season marked an unusually large turnout-consisting of quite a few sopho- mores, ninth graders and two eighth graders twhich has never happened beforel These greenhorns, tno longer greem will be back next year to give Goldendale many wins. Jerry Miller was high-point man, but the Woodward twins, Cliff Wilson and A1 Wilke fought hard and played excellent basketball. But the team couldn,t have gone as far as it did without the help of the substitutes-Mark Kayser, Glenn Web- ber, Leo Swan and Wally Husted. Winning all but two of their scheduled games, the team went to Zillah for the annual tournament. After Winning the first game, the boys lost the second to Zillah, 1i hard-fighting team, but came back to Win the next three, beating Zillah in the ast one. For the first time since admittance to the Yakima Valley District in 1935, the Goldendale team went to the district tournament at Ellensburg. There they met with very much larger schools and lost both their games. Only three seniors from the team Will be graduating this spring, so the season next year promises to be good. Yes, Coach Barker and the team did a fine' job in playing and in winning games. All G. H. S. joins me in saying, tthats off to the team and the coach?
