REFLECTOR Introduction Classes Administration Published annually tandem ZfjQi',ffjgf'aff Lqrheran oouege, 31222222315 Organizations Athletics X- , , My Aw .W Immanuel ,X 2 Always look ahead to Where you are going-- but never forget Where you have been. Yearbooks are designed to help us look back to Where We have been. Looking through these pages in the Spring of 1973 will recall for us the fresh memories of the past year--close friends, campus activities, mental challenges, happy events, discouraging experiences, and growing relationships with Christ who gives special significance to all these encounters. When We page through this yearbook in the Summer of 1974 or the Fall of 1986 or the Winter of 2001, We will view these memories from a different perspective, one of increased maturity. But the influence of this year and these events will still be evident in our lives. As our little cartoon man leads you through this Reflector , may it remind you of Where you have been. 3 42' W5 ' I E L W--. fi ff, ww ,. , , M M 3 '. , 16' ,F ., 'M 372 CLASSES YN I was A CLK ld 1 Spoke, lkcq Qxmd, -X-Xwuvx+ lk a. QD Q5 , , v-5lL--- XX President Bernt C. Opsal During the past two years you have been in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. You have sought to know and to understand more about your- self, your fellowmen, and the world in which you live. You have also had the opportunity to know and to understand more fully, through a study of God's Word and fellowship with other Christians, what it means to have jesus Christ as a personal Savior and Lord. This is an ongoing experience which can continue the rest of your life. You will need to discipline yourself to continue in this pursuit. He will help you if you let Him. Seek the Lord daily through His Word and in prayer. Enjoy the companionship of fellow Christians. Serve your Lord, your church, and your fellowmen through your chosen vocation and Christian service in your everyday life. We shall pray for you every day. Remember us in this ministry. God bless you. li it My first year at the college fi has provided an enjoyable change of pace in my life. The antics of students are always intriguing. . . and so C are their accomplishments. 1. I think we have a great group l of kids on our campus, and I am pleased to be associa- A ted with them. David Anderson Several years ago Dr. Ove A A Olson, my predecessor as dean, included these words in the paragraph he wrote for the Reflector : Never stop praying, learning, growing, and serving. If you can somehow manage to do all of these things during the span of your lifetime, you will have accomplished something very worthwhile. ln addition, you will have set an example that you can be proud to have future students at GVLC emulate. Seriously, time here has called for a lot of adjustments in terms of personal development and group interaction. As resident heads, we have been learning, along with the rest of the guys, what respon- sibility is all about. Such respon- sibility of a resident head is well defined in Hezekiah 4:31 .... Chuck, Marge, and Phillip Kvern Resident Heads at Beta A chance to live and grow to- gether: that has been our oppor- tunity of living in Gamma dorm this year. We've come to find that jesus Christ is able to use many varied ways to touch lives and make His love known. His touch, through 64 fellow residents of our home, has been a great ex- perience for us. This has been a chance to really see the meaning of love, hope, joy, patience, and sadness come alive as we all grew together. This is a year we will always cherish. 'Twas the night before finals, when all through the Dorm Not a student was studying, in Beta Dorm! fI'll leave the rest to your imagination! J All in all, it's been a great year living with the greatest students of all - the Beta gals. Our daily prayer is that each one may come to know Christ as her personal Savior before they leave this dorm. For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. E 2 A Royal Homecoming 36 it IM Homecoming Week of 1972 activated every GVLC student in some way. A few signs of expression were staying-hushed-or-paying, painting signs, being a slave or the driver, wearing the school colors and being old-fashioned. Football cheerleaders took in over S100 on the slave auction, Dale Skessick and Debbie Bedman got free dance tickets for making the most people of the opposite sex talk. Friday night, October 13, the Talent Show preceded the coronation. Can- didates were: CFreshmenJ Pam Olson, Sandi Estrem, Marilyn Lund, jennifer Hendricks, Mark Annexstad, Erik Monson, Loren Gustafson, and Charlie Warner: CSophomoresJ Lynn Bellows, Sue Lovas, Nancy Hanson, Sarah Lee, Larry Kroeger, Kevin Wille, jim Feltman, and Curt Laingen. Queen Rea from the House of Maattala and King Ross from the House of McAfee were crowned and kissed by the returning king and queen of Homecoming 1971. Saturday was cold, but the pom-pom girls did their thing. The football game with Itasca ended with a score of 33-42. Saturday in the Park couples danced to the Pepperfog 3 the dance and snacks following were CSA sponsored. Although Sno-Daze fell in a rather barren Sno-Daze Week of winter, Gamma managed to gather enough snow and ice for a snow sculpture, and the pond stayed frozen for the site of the coronation. Queen Sarah and King Curt reigned over the festivities which included a campus talent show, a Royals Win over Lakewood C81-705, and a dance, lcicles, Popsicles, and Rain- bows , With music by the Rise and Shine. if I 1 H l fx f M K Queen Sarah Lee and King Curt Laingen. Music can be a form of expressing one's self, a form of pleasure, a way of living and can be a way of witnessing for Christ. To the A Cappella Choir members, music is at least one of these for them. For Mr. john Seagard, Director, music is everything, thus creating wonderful leadership for the choir. The choir has taken four tours throughout the year. Three weekenders to Southeastern, Southwestern and Northern Minnesota and a 12 day tour to Southern states including Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. The choir often gave evening concerts or Sunday morning worship concerts here in the Minneapolis area, especially during the Christmas and Lenten seasons. Singing has given the choir every opportunity to witness to people and share their love for Christ. Their conduct reflected that they were truly one in the Spirit. This past Christmas season, the Symphonic Choir Ca combination of the Chapel and A Cappella choirsb was given the opportunity of singing Hector Berlioz's Childhood of Christ with the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra. Two performances were given, one here at Golden Valley and the other at Coffman Union on the University of Minnesota campus Minneapolis. 43 Sing Unto God! ROW 1, L. TO R., D. Brown, D. johnson, B. Q fn. 44 The Chapel Choir president, Phil Youngdale, and director, Mrs. Dorothy Seagard, did a grand job of arranging a four day choir tour from March Zlst through the 25th. Some of the stops were St. Louis, Missouri, Rock Island, Illinois, Chicago and the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. The Chapel Choir owes much to the accompanists, Debbie Brown and julie Beck. Valuable contributions were also given by Cheryl Tofte, secretary, Marilyn Lund, music librarian and Mary Ann Baird, devotion leader. A spirit of hard Work and excitement was shared by all members throughout the year's practices and engagements. MADRICALS: FRONT ROW, L, TO R.g K. Hovde, R. Ellefson, L. Wilstermann, D. Olson, C. It has grown rapidly in number and enthusiasm largely due to the enthusiastic leadership of the director, Mr. Dean Dainsberg. The band took part in the Festival of the Christ Child, playing several numbers in the opening section of the concert. As of press time the band is planning to take a brief tour in the spring, performing at other colleges in the Minnesota area. Plans are also being made for a Band Festival to be held on campus in the spring. Besides this, the college provides an opportunity for experience in small ensembles such as Brass, Percussion and String. fny it .,' Z A Y r X i .
