01:? must increase J must decrease. , john 3:30 REFLECTOR NOT WHAT MY HAN DS HAVE DON E Warm-hearted men live in memories. That is the greatest reward they can receive here in time; and surely it must be one of the rewards in eternity. A man walks a nar- row trail in Africa; a woman visits a lonely home in Montana; a nurse bends over to whisper an encouraging word to a fainting heart - and all have a flash of memory of a man who taught them by his example to be kind, to be understanding, to be faithful to Him who taught us all the virtues of a kindly heart. We thank you for the lessons you have taught through the years. The living water of the Word refreshed us when you brought it up from the Spring. The unshake- able power of the RoCk became so firm in our hearts when you showed us the Church our God was building upon it. The crystal-clear meaning of His grace touched our lives so intimately when you gave it to us in under- standable words. We thank you, Dr. Cornitzka, for it all. Our wish to you is the wish of youth to age, may you have many glory-spangled years before God calls you to take the sunset trail into His presence. DR. 0. GORNITZKA FACULTY AND ' ADMINISTRATION . . a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. II TIMOTHY 2:15b Total dependency upon God! We claim not one iota of merit for our salvation. We would be thrown into doubt and despair if we had to rely on our doing for salva- tion because we would never know if we had done enough. This we need not con- cern ourselves with. Christ has obtained salvation for us iHeb. 9:26l. Now as by God's grace you go out, always remember that it will be in proportion to the way that the Word of God is lived through your attitudes, words, and deeds that others will see and hear of this free sal- vation offered to all who will respond in repentance and faith. Godspeed! His promise is sure, iiAnd lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age? iMatt. 28:20l. Pastor Wilson Fagerberg, Deon Pastor Bernt C. Opsal, President I am sure that during the years you have spent in studying Godis Word, God has convinced you many times of the truth in the lines of your class theme, iiNot What my hands have done? As you now leave LBI all of us on the faculty and staff join you in singing from our hearts another line of the same hymn, No strength save that which is divine can bear me safely through? In the measure that you ex- perience the lack of strength and goodness of your own works and look to the divine strength in Christ which God offers you- in that measure will you experience for- giveness and peace. May His peace ac- company you in each task ahead. FACULTY PASTOR ROY R. BLOOMQUIST It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me . . . Gal. 2:20. The pri- mary purpose in coming to LBI is to understand and experience the reality of this vital truth -- 'not I- but Christ.' When this becomes the dominant theme and practice of our lives We may expect to receive the fullness of God's blessing. PASTOR A. S. BERG You have reached one of life's significant milestones - congratulations! God bless each one of you. In the glorious partner- ship of service for Christ may the thought at the heart of your fine class motto ever challenge you. Living in His grace, His hand in yours will keep you strong and loyal. Greetings in Eph. 2:8-10. EDNA CARLSON Dedicated hands are folded in prayer, bringing down the blessing of God upon themselves and others. Dedicated hands hold the Bible and from its pages show others His salvation. Dedicated hands are helpful hands, lifting the burdens of others. None of this is done to gain sal- vation, but because of love for Him who said, It is finished. PASTOR AL BYERS When you look out into the world to which you are going, my friends, it ap- pears that there is one striking character- istic that stands out. Isaiah had put it in words like this: Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands afar off; for truth has fallen in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter. 59:14. Only one thing would I exhort the graduating class to do. Be honest! Be honest first with yourself. Honesty begins within. Be honest with God. Spiritual peace and life are affected by it. Be honest with every- one. Communal peace and harmony are affected by it. Perhaps you could be so contagious that our nation and the world would be affected. Asking too much? How many are there of you? He was only one, they were only twelve. PASTOR A. W. DICKHART Your searching of the Scriptures at the Lutheran Bible Institute has enabled you to unite with Peter Gn John 6:68-69t in ioyfully confessing to Jesus, Thou host the words of eternal life! God has great blessings for you in future days as you continue to study, build upon, and share the Word of God! Our prayers are with you. DR. 0. GORNITZKA Not what my hands have done - no, not your hands, but His. Those hands were pierced as they were nailed to the cross and with that nailing The bond which stood against you was canceled. That made you free, not to live unto self, but that your hands may be those of a bondslove of Jesus Christ. You are now free to serve the Master with ioy and glodness. DR. JOHN E. GRONLI Not what these hands have done, but we in faith can see The nail-pierced hands of Christ, who won the victory; He bore our sin and shame, as on the cross He died, That we might live to Him and serve the Crucified; He calls you to His work as heralds of His love; He leads through life, through death, unto His home above. PASTOR K. C. GRUNDAHL From our sheltered port at lBl we prayer- fully send you as our fleet of ships. As vessels of the Lord you unfurl your sails to push out upon the tides and waves of the seas of the world. May the God of hope fill you with all ioy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope Rom. 15:13. If you are thus filled, you will be bearers of a cargo desired in every port: ioy, peace, faith and hope. In every land hearts await your coming to offer ioy instead of anguished sorrow; peace in- stead of anxious turmoil; and hope to replace earth's broken dreams. In every port may you be found faithful to deliver. PHILIP G. HANSON It is in the humble and contrite heart that God has promised to dwell. God gives grace to the humble. May the grace, which came through Jesus Christ, keep you aware of your own helplessness, that you may grow in grace and knowledge of Him. PASTOR BERNHARD A. HELLAND A multitude of facts can be learned by the mind but we must enlist also the heart to know the TRUTH. CARLA HOLTERMANN I will therefore desire that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands . . I Tim. 2:8. live each day in the glow of God's neorness. Place one hand in His, and with the other reach out to those who are in need. Make every hour count for eternity. RUTH P. NELSON Look to Jesus Christ, thy Savior, Thou who are God's child and friend,- let thy heart forget Him never, Still thy gaze on Jesus bend. In thy rest and in thy labor look to Him with ev'ry breath, Look to Jesus' life and death. PASTOR A. R. PETERSEN May each one of you then in all humility continue in your class theme throughout life. Not what my hands have done, for by grace l have been saved through faith; and that is not my doing, it is the gift of God - not because of my worlts, lest I in them should boost. On my own behalf I will not boost, except of my weaknesses. Let me who will boast, boast of my lord. SADIE PONWITH Christ our Savior, Christ our lord has shed His precious blood for us and brought us close to the heart of God. Never doubt in the dark the things Hey has told you in the light. PASTOR RUSSELL VIKSTROM Not to us, 0 lord, not to us, but to thy name give glory, for the sake of thy steadfast love and thy faithfulness! Psalm 115:1. This expresses the deepest desire of every growing Christian. We are saved by the grace of Christ alone. We are Christians only through His constant care and keeping. Therefore beware of every impulse to pride and self-glory, and be quick to give glory to God. Not what my hands have done - but I bless the Christ of God! PASTOR ARNOLD STONE For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is'not your own doing, it is the gift of God - not be- cause of works, lest any man should boast Eph. 2:8-9. Thus Paul firmly of- firms that our salvation is not by what our hands have done, but by what His pierced hands did do. Let us ever lay hold on this truth and reioice in it. OLETTA WALD In whatever field of service the Lord leads you, may you continue to experience the icy of discovery as you study God's Word, and may you also help many others to become discoverers of the wonderful truths as you share the Word. WORD BY AIR Miriam Ahlness Elsie Steen PASTOR W. E. KLAWITTER For the earth shall be full of the knowl- edge of the lord, as the waters cover the sea. Isa. 11:9. Radio has definitely become an arm of LBI in assisting the Church in proclaiming the Good News. To enlarge our outreach at home and abroad is our prayer till each remotest WORD BY MAI L heart has heard 'Messiah's name. Recognizing that the spiritual welfare of the student is of primary importance, LBI endeavors to provide a wholesome Christian atmosphere in which the spiritual life of the student may be nourished. So it is, out of the suggested times for quietness and study, personal and group devotions, there grows a bond of fellowship that is with the student wherever he goes. There is a tremendous ioy and satisfaction in seeing the power of the Word change the lives and attitudes of young men, as we see them go on to further education, or go back to their homes, business and church with a deepened zeal and zest for the things of the lord. It is the function of the Board of Trustees to promote and carry out the aims and purposes of the Lutheran Bible Institute as defined in the Articles of Incorporation. This board, composed of twenty-four members, twelve pastors and twelve loy- men, is the national board for all four schools; in addition, each school has a regional board. ALUMNI Dennis Erickson, Deaconess Hulda Simen- son, Jock Benson, Donovan Lundeen, Louise Nelson. Finally, be strong in the lord and in the strength of his might. Ephesians 6:10. Strong men and women are urgently needed in the Kingdom today - people who are trusting in the power of a great God to overcome the malignant forces of evil. You who have studied the Word of God here have had an excellent oppor- tunity to become strong in faith, in spir- itual knowledge and in equipment for service. , It is true that the food you have eaten in the LBI dining room won't continue to give you physical strength for the weeks, months and years ahead. You will have to keep on eating to be strong in body. The same holds true in the realm of the spirit. You will need to keep on eating the spiritual food of the Word to grow stronger in your spirit. As you now become former students we invite you to unite with us in active spiritual and material support of LBI. Deaconess Hulda E. Simenson ll 47 STUDENT INDEX Gudmundson, Mugnus ..............
