Roma 0 Tkuslees The keynote at our conversation . . . should be a sense of all that we owe to God. This translation of Ephesians 5:4 by Phillips is arresting. I realize that Paul in this context meant by conversation our speech, but I do not believe that we violate the intention of Paul if we apply this verse to the whole of a believer's life - and read it thus: The keynote of our life ought to be a sense of all that we owe to God. Now the keynote is the note that is meant to dominate. The keynote address of a convention, for instance, is meant to set the tone of the entire gathering. Just so our sense of all that we owe to God ought to dominate our whole-being - thought and conduct. To let the sense of what we OWe to God dominate us, however, is only another way of saying that the graciousness of God ought to make us grateful. And whenever men respond in gratitude to God, there the miracle happens - they in turn b'ecome gracious to their fellows.
