The golden institution rests in o small, secluded valley engulfed with the aura of a sacred temple. This structure is fondly referred to os Golden Valley High School. After yeors of use and abuse, our school Is finally coming to its demise. We're leaving now, and it will sit alone like a body without its soul. Strewn from one end to the other lie the evidence of a spirited mass in full force. Textbooks, rotten apples, assign-ments, and candy wrappers cover the usually clean floors. Cluttered on Tuesday, they slowly resume their composure as the men from behind the wall perform their tasks. Bits of tape and paper ore left scattered about like a priml-tlve collage. The ever constant classes emanate from every door. Periodically, green leaves flutter from the branches of the potted free sitting in the foyer. It knows not the season, nor what Is to come. Taking one lost look at these walls, that hove helped to shape my intellect, I realize how many memories the two of us have shored. McKelvy (1975). 4 EV ■HliTBRY Once upon o time, almost o century ago. in 1885, settlers built a one-room schoolhouse on the remote farmland west of Minneapolis. This schoolhouse. stonding on the spot where Meadow-brook Elementary School now stands, was the humble beginning of our school district. The years passed, and the orea of Golden Valley developed. The tiny school expanded to four rooms in 1922. During the sparse years of the depression, though the school's teachers finally became accredited, the principal had to be dropped due to his lack of high school credits. HISTORY school, Meodowbrook District 89. provided for grodes 1-8. but wos Informed by the state's educational system thot It hod to supply Its students with o secon-dary education in addition to on elementary one. Other sections of Golden Valley conglomerated with Robblns-dale or Hopkins, but the Meodowbrook oreo held out. Ignoring the store, sending Its students to Jefferson and proudly taking the name: Independent School District 275. Yet. by 1955, a survey by the Unlver-sity of Minnesota Field Studies felt it would be eosier for the Meodowbrook district to merge with another. Yes. even In the 50’s. before anyone from the Class of '80 was born, the merger battle was fought. That time, though unsuspecting that their decision wouldn't lost, the anti-merger people won out 713 to 101. Still, there wos the high school problem. The district voted to appropriate Sl.250,000 to build Meo-dowbrook High School. In 1956 ground wos broken with great optimism for the new building, and they changed the name to Golden Valley High School. There were a few delays, but by Feb. 9, 1958, the high school wos completed and hod its formol dedication. Thus, our high school was born. The high school's first faculty wos small. The first graduating class, the Closs of '59, numbered only In the thirties. but os the yeors progressed, the school population grew. Golden Valley High School, of course, was affected; the styles and attitudes of students changed, and a freer, less disciplined ambience permeated the school. In the early 70's, an oddifion wos built on the west end of the school to accomodate whot wos then on escalating student population. Duf In the middle of the decode, the first suggestion of disaster appeared. The school population In Meadowbrook steadily declined. Instead of having to deal with expected overcrowding (1980 attendance of GVHS was projected In the early 60 s to be 1981) the administration faced the problem of declining enrollment. Cuts In staff, courses, and the closing of the Middle School took place In the lost few years, but the measures were not sufficient. District 275 could not survive on it's own. The unhappy defeats and stirring victories of years of struggle on the ploying fields will become nothing but dry statistics in some record book. A tradition of school activities ranging from Cross Country to Cabaret, from pep fests to PSAT’S will come to on abrupt close. The circle completed: the merger put off so long ago will now take place with Hopkins. Lynn Cohen, Dave Schut. and Steve Robin were also awarded prizes as they modeled their clothes in the newest GV fad: Inside-out and backwardsl Sean Smuda and Al Rosal also showed their sense of development as they placed first in the Photography Contest. The all-stor faculty teom come out victorious, as they razzled-dozzled the kids from the volley In the third annual student-faculty basketball game. The chance to turn and become an owed spectacle of admiration wos offered by Pot Peterson, the choir director, and some selected judges from GV's own talented, new choir, who judged some 40 acts. Seventeen were selected to be in the show. A lot of preparation went info this memorable performance, with numerous reheorsals for the 17 acts being held in any void space available. In addition, many practices were held for the musically inclined Jazz Ensemble and the choir, which unveiled a dance routine. Some of the more notable acts were a demonstration of Dove Schut's prodigious abilities on the piano, a well-executed interpretive dance routine by Liz Egan. For this final appearance the Thespians of GVHS were granted the opportunity of working under a new professional director named Lawrence Santoro, who was acquired through Miss Dlixt’s special connections. The actors took the form of an ensemble of farm animals representing the proletariat opressed class, who revolt and take the form over from the humans - the bourgeoisie capitalistic oppressors. The grand finale of Golden Volley High School's dramatic performances proved to be truly stupendous, but how could they go wrong with a director like Santoro, a technician like Miss Blixt and such a wonderfully talented cast! For this year's volleyball team brought new faces to the crowd. Mothers, fathers, friends, teachers and even the football team showed up to help motivate and support the volleyball team. Pulverizing drums, clanging cowbells, and even riding a stuffed buffalo (the team's mascot) was how the fans displayed enthusiosm for the girls volleyball team. Each minute they spent together they came up with a few nicknames for one another. Each day, including before games, spirit was generated by listening to the Doobie Brothers or the Charlie Daniels Band. Each game brought more members to the pep band ond crowd to watch them play. How-ever, from 1967 to 1979, Dill Miller hod been the swim coach ond developed one of the best programs In the state. Although the GV teams were never too big. It was known statewide for Its excellent swimmers. Throughout the years Golden Volley has produced many champions and some with state records that ore still holding today. Beginning with Duane Dresser who wos out for most of the seoson with a knee injury, Steve Towler, who was hospitalized with the flu, Jeff Garfin with a nose Injury and a pulled groin, mony wrestlers throughout the season had been badly mauled on the mats. Coach Hansen, who said size and Injuries really hurt us, wos joined by co-cap-talns Duane Dresser and Roger Link in the ongoing attempt to get and keep a large enough team to compete. They even fried coaxing new members down from the bleachers during pep-fests. They were going to shower any new members with gifts and a feast, but decided it might be too much.
