The library' proved to be a frequent haunt of Vikings doing the many term papers assigned. “I.OOK MA. NO F s! cries Jerry Huuschildt. He displays his enthusiasm for the new report cards, which contain evaluating numbers after the letter grade. Change — New Faces and Places One year is a short span in the course of a lifetime. To the older generation, who realize the importance of each task and the brevity of life itself, a year may seem very short. To the middle generation, time speeds by much too rapidly. One year is merely a ripple in the water which quickly disappears into obscurity. To a teenager, time is measured between dates, school, parties, and is as fluctuating as his emotions, so that a year moves slowly week by week, month by month, but quickly in its entirety. To a Valleyite or Minneapolitan, a year is a time for improvement, for new horizons, for new faces. I960-1961 has been such a year and has opened up entirely new facets in the areas of education and culture. Golden Valley's own community theatre became a reality on January 20 when the curtain rose on their first production. My Three Angels. It was acclaimed “an overwhelming success for the first effort of a community theatre” by reviewers in 8:30, a theatre magazine. Minneapolis too. has become “stage struck. The Tyrone Guthrie Theatre Project selected the Twin Cities for their new home. To Valleyites it will mean another cultural experience. While interest in the theatre was booming, so was Golden Valley’s population and, with it, the increasing need for more classroom space. Thus, District 275 was organized educationally on a 4-4-4 grade plan. This means that Golden Valley is to house kindergarten through grade four in Meadowbrook. and grades five through eight in a new middle school. The latter will be built adjacent to the high school, which will house grades nine through twelve. Report card day, often candidly referred to as “Black Wednesday.” showed up with something new for Valleyites this year. Besides the regular letter grade, numerical grades of one or two were given if the student was not working up to his ability. The purpose of the change was to provide a greater understanding of the student’s progress for both students and parents. Juniors and Seniors referred to Minneapolis' new 8-million dollar library as “my second home. The modern library created a l eautiful atmosphere for study. The use of a revised system of Ncw-Matic tubes and the drive-in window saves time for Valleyites. While two new important figures, Dr. 0. Meredith Wilson, newlv-elected president of the University of Minnesota. and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, the new director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, were making their debut. Valley was saying good-bye to Lucille Rosenow, superintendent of District 275. She came to Golden Valley when the Class of 1961 was in first grade and left the year they graduated. Succeeding her is Dr. Elmer R. Kane, formerly employed as assistant superintendent of the Minnetonka School district. And so another year of progress becomes another year of history. 9

Vikings Fill Social Life With The girl next door talking on the phone, the fellows bending in concentration under the hoods of their cars, and the gang listening to the stereo and sipping cokes have shown their preference for an eased and simple social life. The Golden Valley Vikings' idea of a relaxing Saturday evening consists of viewing the latest film and dropping by their favorite restaurant for a snack. An average of 85 is spent on a regular movie date. Most boys agree that picking up a date at 7:30 and returning her to her doorstep at 12:15 allows adequate time for a fun-filled evening. A popular vote showed Valleyites’ favorite movie to be Hen Hut with Exodus trailing a close second. The favorite platter was “Theme from Exodus. followed by “Theme from Summer Place.” However, the Kingston Trio was the most popular recording group. Found by poll to be favorite haunts were Beck’s, for the best sausage pizza, and MacDonald’s, for economy— and hamburgers, of course! Bowling, tennis, and boating were dates enjoyed by most athletic enthusiasts, while basketball, football, and baseball were favorites of the bench warming set. Aspen was a winter wonderland of skiing and fun for five Junior and Senior boys who enjoyed a trip to Colorado’s snow-covered mountains during Christmas vacation. Parties, parties, parties! Guests drank hundreds of cokes, literally devoured pounds of peanuts, pretzels, and potato chips, and danced to everything from Blue Moon to the Madison.” The game of Limbo was popular whenever a mop handle and Steve Pawlcyn met. In another corner, a session on the “finer” things of life, namely card playing, pool, storytelling, and singing, were underway. The average attendance at some twenty parties of this type during the year numbered 50 to 60 Valleyites ranging in age from 15 to 18. “Atmospheric” parties were the trend during the holiday season. Punch in dVjicate glasses and hors d’oevures replaced pop bottles and the usual chips and dip. Informal sportswear was exchanged for suits and party dresses while formal party manners were a must. Some found that homework was “interfering” with their extracurricular activities, but on the whole, the past year was a whirl of gaiety and excitement—even with the seemingly never-ending daily class curriculum. Valleyites often dropped in at Beck's and were seen devouring spicy specialties, marking a finale to numerous gala festivities. Pizza was a favorite snack of all Vikings. “SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY.
