■ (?£ei 59 Dedicate . IN THE BEGINNING there was an idea, and with the passing of the years it became an evergrowing need. Golden Valley’s District Eighty Nine was to have a new high school, allowing the citizens thereof to enjoy the conveniences and merits of controlling their entire educational system. Important decisions had to be made. For all the benefits, The Piper had to be paid. Careful studies were made by the School Board as to which would be more practical, consolidating with another school district or building a high school of our own. THE TASK OF CONVINCING the voters of the district to build now confronted the Board. Over fifty meetings were held at homes of interested persons with about twenty-five people attending each meeting. To build, or not to build, was the option offered voters at the called election. Overwhelmingly the bond issue of 831,000 dollars was approved. The architects submitted designs, and when commended, the contractors began work breaking ground October 3, 1956. On September 11, 1957, students in grades seven through eleven walked into the new building for the first time. The formal dedicatory service was held on February 9, 1958. LUCILLE D. ROSENOW THE FIRST SCHOOL YEAR was difficult for students and faculty. The buzzing of power saws and drills and the clamor of hammers, not to mention the groans and growds of heavy landscaping machinery outside, along with the sea of mud that greeted us each morning, made the program of getting an education a definite challenge. IN ITS SECOND YEAR the woes of the first were only memories. The air was stilled of distractions, the grass was growing, trees were planted, and the beauty oF the school became apparent. Traditions were being established and a well-balanced curriculum was set before the students. All of- this the Class of Nineteen Hundred Fifty-Nine remembers today, but through the coming years many of the forestated facts will be forgotten. However, our associations with people of outstanding character will remain a lasting influence on our lives. IT IS WITH LOVING RESPECT THE CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-NINE DEDICATES THIS BOOK TO OUR FRIEND OF MANY YEARS. MISS LUCILLE D. ROSENOW, SUPERINTENDENT. The Juniors found that their experience with the Dance de Noel paid off very well. Earlier in the year, after a sales-weary class had finished selling magazine subscriptions, they eagerly started memorizing lines for the class play, The Baby Sitter. Both of these successful events helped build up the treasury enough to cover the expenses of the Prom. The Juniors of 1958-59 began in September with $70 in the class fund, sponsored a $500 prom, and in June had $10 with which to begin an important senior year. The team played eight squads, winning 5 and losing 3. The remainder of the games were played against Junior Varsities where the record of 14 wins and 3 losses was made. During this first varsity year, C.V. won 10 and lost 5. A third place in the nine-team Valley Conference was an unexpected achievement for the first-year team. This was accomplished by the selection of cheerleaders. Not only do these girls have to be limber, but they must be vivacious, courteous, and good sports at all times. From among the girls who attended the clinic held to train prospective cheerleaders, three seniors, and three juniors were selected as varsity cheerleaders. Three sophomores and three freshmen made up the B” squad. The new cheerleaders attended a state-wide Cheerleading Clinic at St. Louis Park High School. They received many pointers on executing cheers properly, and tried them out on the Golden Valley-itcs. They liked them! All in all, the cheerleaders had a very successful year under the able guidance of Miss Mary Nctzingcr. ROW 1: Carol Walters, Jeri Jeppesen. Judy McBride. Both teams have participated in the Valley Conference competitions. The track team placed fourth in one of the closest Conference meets in years. This means that there is a big future in store for the teams with the new track incentive present in the Conference at Golden Valley. Outstanding records were set by Pat Flanagan, who broke the 100-yard dash Conference record, and Denny Erickson, who placed third in the region in the discus. While most other teams had senior-filled lineups, the Vikings played seven Juniors, five Sophomores, two Freshmen, and five Eighth graders. All of the squad will be back next year, and most of them will bring back the additional experience of summer competition. The six leading hitters on the team this year were Ricky Carlson, Marvin Socher, Bill Kuhlman, Creighton Mitchell, Joey George and Doug McNeil. Most of the pitching assignments this season were handled by Eighth grader Skip Hall who got credit for the only Conference win, and Freshman Ricky Carlson. The catching was handled by Sophomore Doug McNeil and Eighth-grader Stub Svcns-son. Profiting from this year's play, the Vikings look toward next season when, a year older and more experienced, they expect to be strong contenders in conference rivalry. The climax of the year centered around the first Athletic Banquet at which the all-time great Minnesota football coach, Bernic Bierman, the guest speaker received an honorary membership. Dennis Erickson was awarded the Senior Athletic Award for outstanding development and leadership in athletics. This award will be given each year to the outstanding athlete of the Senior class. 76 THE CORN STALKS AND HAY BALES that surround Marrin' Sam typify the decorations used to get Golden Valley High School in the mood for Sadie Hawkins Dance sponsored by the Senior Class. utd Se ti v i BARB HAUGE AND GORDY LESTER dressed in the typical Sadie Hawkins fashion, appear to be enjoying a dance out. The play was unusual, for the gentle patients at the asylum were strongly contrasted to the money-grabbing outsiders. The play was the story of a lady, Mrs. Savage, who possessed a great fortune which she put to unorthodox use. Her grown-up stepchild had her committed, then discovered that she had hidden ten million dollars. Mrs. Savage attempted to make her children sec themselves in perspective by sending them on ridiculous goose-chases in quest of the treasure, but her efforts nearly ended in tragedy. 81 MISS WILLIE (SANDY LINDSTROM), NURSE at the Cloisters, talks with Doctor Emmett (Kent Wochrle).
