S TU C 0 decides on The STUCO was an important group during the year of '72, Organizing quickly at the start of the school term, they took on their first im- portant project: Homecoming. Under the presidency of Todd Knudson as- sisted by Vice-President Dan Roth and Secret- ary-Treasurer Janice Brantley, the STU CO showed their ability to think sensibly and act accordingly when it came to solving problems and discussing disagreements when they arose. When no other group wants a project, the STU CO is where everyone turns. Christmas parties, candy machines, noon-hour volley ball games are a few of the year round responsibil- ities the STUCO handles in order to make the school year---1972 in particular---just a little more pleasant for everyone involved. 32 homecoming '72 33 Homecoming '72 was marked by a week of competition. The classes competed by turning the unused walls into art galleries, by racing against time with their class piggy banks, by stuffing their mouths with Tootsie Rolls in between bells, by yelling. their lungs out, by play- . ing a competitive ball 1 game, and by honoring royalty. The two eight-man team games with Healy and Herndon were the highlights of the season with the Bulldogs overcoming the Healy Eagles 16 to 6 and then upsetting the Herndon Beavers 52 to 16. Larry Wahlmeier, a new coach to the team, came with new ideas. The team had many problems to overcome: a football field with a light pole in the middle and a play- ing area to mow before every game. But more than that, just lunging for a loose ball can be a marvelous act of desire, a'one over fallen leaves or on a court cleaved of snow. The players at home and in visiting games proved to spec- tators that a four-year old school with determination and coaching can put it all together and come up with a team that knows the meaning of teamwork no matter what town they come from. The Bulldog varsity team ended the season with a League record of six wins and five losses, while coming out only one game behind in their season record. Their last win of the scheduled season was the Bulldogs' biggest margin victory when they led over the Herndon Beavers 84 to 38. But the game that probably made everyone-- Coach Donald Sloan, players, teachers, students and townspeople--the happiest was the exciting battle with Brewster that advanced Golden Plains toDistrict finals and on into the State Regional Tourn- ament at Goodland. The Bulldogs also finished third in the Northern Division of the WKL Tournament with their two victories over Hern- don and Edson. Top scorer for the season was JohnBlack with afinal total of 199 points in league points. He was nom- inated to the All-League Team fpictured on page 415, Steve Shaw was high in rebounds with a season total of 164 points. Steve received honorable mention in the All-League Team. The young team members, fa Sophomore being the average age of all the players! say that 1972 was a good year and with spirit, drive, and ability, 1973 can be even better. . W Back Row: Coach Louis Wahlmeier, Kim Knudson, Jannell Dible, Glenda Lemman, Jacklyn Pauls, Susan Beckman Janice Faidley Front Row: Patty Morton, Dona Kaus, Pam Short, Marilyn Rogers, Myrna Aumiller, Colleen Aumiller, Gloria Koerperich Basketball--female style--was back to play- ing a five-man team, boys' rules. Apparently Coach Wahlmeier and the girls liked the new game, for their record went up from a few years past. At the end of the season, the A team was only one game behind withfive wins and six losses. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Patty Morton. Although she missed two games be- cause of sickness, her total was above the rest of the players with a season total of eighty- three. The B team, consisting of seven players made a name for the school by pushing their way clear to the top of the B Team Girls Tourney held at Winona and proudly carrying home a first place trophy. '72 was a Red Let- ter Year! The scrape and snap of Keds on courts seem to catapult their voices high into the moist air. Schoolyard or playground ball - basketball no matter the name- is a terrific dream game, a fantasy an addiction. P D 3. a. Snoball Queen and King, Rhonda McKee and Fred Albers b. Butch Kaus. Co-sponsored by Mrs. Bev Gar- rett and Mrs. Jodi Rogers, the growing group planned most of the first semester for the winter Snoball which was held in the Selden Gymnasium. There, .in a Christmas atmosphere, with music by the Canadian Blue Goose, King Fred Al- bers and Queen Rhonda McKee were hon- rored by the Y-Teens and other friends. .r ,,b X.: x .,, f ,, Q ,, , , 1, K, ai xx, x y gg l 2.5 ,Jw , gf. Entertaining for football pep rallies and during warm-up periods at basketball games gave many people achance to hear the 20-mem- ber band that wouldn't have otherwise. A Pop Concert in November and the State Music Con- test in April rounded out the year for the music makers. Discordant sounds were never heard from Mr. Taylor's room on Thursdays for that was when Golden Plains'Mixed Chorus was practic- ing. Their main performances were at the Pop Concert and a concert given in the spring. The 1972 Band and Mixed Chorus were under the able direction of Mr. Lloyd R. No classroom, no Golden Plains function was safe from their prying eyes. The BULLDOG staff had a formidable year before them. Led by Mr, Lee Roy Casebeer, their advisor, and Dalene Mustoe, their ed- itor, the group met every Thursday af- ternoon. The staff's dream was to capture the essence of this, our red letter year. Colby, Kansas l l cz rea' letter year . . . is called that because it is special or because something happened that made it stand out. Every year is alittle dif- ferent than those before or those that follow simply because nothing happens the same way twice and changes are always made. The year 1972 was one to be remembered--because of sports and the achievements the teams made in that area. It is to be remembered--because of drama and the accomplish- ments made by those students in league, district, and state competition. It is to be looked back on by makers of music-- because the year was the beginning of new sounds coming from that department. Scholars look back at 1972 and recall the new things they learned and the older things they review- ed. Every will-be or has-been Senior has a red-letter year because that particular year is both an end and a begin- ning to very important stages of his life. This yearbook is-intendedto point out the reasons 1972 was a red-letter year and to picture the people who made it so. It was our goal to make it a book for all ages--fromy1972 to 1984. My thanks,as editor, go to my staff of five. I can honestly say that they all deserve credit'for worldng on the yearbook- if not in actually laying out a page, then in throwing in their ideas and offering encouragement where needed. I would like to express a special thanks also to the advisor who worked long hours with a pencil and rulerin hand to help make this book what it is. My thanks, in addition, to my fellow Seniors and other special friends who helped make 1972 a red-letter year for me--may every day be the best day of your life!
