Y - . - , 1 1 . , 1 . . . . 1 1 Class History In the year of 1947 It was only a small group of freshmen who entered the doors of the Goessel Hxgh School It was 1ndeed a small group for there were only slxteen members at the begmmng of the year w1th Don Relmer com1ng to Jo1n us after a few weeks We must have looked green as all freshmen supposedly do for dldnt we appear on 1n1t1at1on day w1th our ha1r bralded carrylng dolls, and pulllng toys For some members of the class the day was no doubt an eggy one The class b1g shots for the year were Wlllard Banman pres1dent Merlbeth Boese v1ce pres1dent and Vera Belle Schm1dt secretary treasurer As our Student Councll members we elected Marcella Schm1dt and Kermlt Dlrksen The sponsor was M1ss Gladys Hower Durmg the year we had two class p1cn1cs the only act1v1t1es of the year The yeal of 1948 agam brought lnto the hlghschool the same group who were now known as sophomores Th1s vear there were elghteen members ln the class Arzella Nlkkel Jolned our class after a year at Lehlgh To serve on the evecutxve comm1ttee that year We elected Vera Belle Schm1dt as pres1dent Kermlt Dlrksen was vlce pres1dent and Karl Ratzlaff as secretary treasurer Merlbeth Boese and Wlllard Banman were our Student Councll representatlves As class sponsor we chose Mr Elmer Khppenstem Durmg the year the class made 1tS f1rst stage appearance 1n the freshman sophomore play Plckles Becomes a Lad Sore tra1ls were e'cper1enced and many complalnts uttered when we heard that 1n order to be Walters and wa1tresses at the Tumor Senxor Banquet We had to go barefooted But It seems that some of the g1rls d1dn't m1nd because there were some 1mportant members 1n the Jumor class Due to th1s the lnterest ln the event went beyond that of Just servmg Wlth the year of 49 only seventeen of our group returned to proceed ln the obta1n1ng of an educatxon Vera Belle Schm1dt had moved to W3Sh1Hgt0H and was goxng to school 1n Ferndale Washmgton Another change had been made the once unlmportant sophomores who had roamed the halls the year before were now the d1gn1f1ed Junlors After the electlon of off1cers for the year the top d1gn1tar1es appeared to be Merlbeth Boese pres1dent Karl Ratzlaff v1ce pres1dent Geneva Schroeder secretary and Kermlt Dxrksen, treas urer Marcella Schm1dt and Ervln Hrebert represented the class on the Student Councll The spon sor was Mxss Malmda Penner who also dlrected the Junlor play He1e Comes Patr1c1a The Junlors also gave a program cons1st1ng of a one act play solos and the famous Three Old Malds from Lynn, ln order to put a bulge 1n our yet sl1m flnanclal possesslons Shortly be fore the close of the year a banquet The Enchanted Forest, ' was prepared for the very deserv 1ng sen1ors The year of 1950 saw exghteen of them back as sen1ors Vera Belle Schm1dt left Ferndale Washlngton and agaln Jomed our class Our class supervlsors were Mr Clxfton Gunnels and Mr W O Schm1dt As class offlcxals we elected Kermit Dlrksen pres1dent Vera Belle Schmldt, vxce pres1dent Marcella Schm1dt secretary and Karl Ratzlaff, treasurer Geneva Schroeder and Wxllard Banman served as representatlves m the Student Councll Our class p1cn1c consxsted of a hay rack r1de after wh1ch we all enJoyed a wlener roast In order to ralse some money durmg the flrst semester the class sponsored a motlon plcture Har mony Lane Durmg the second semester we gave a one act play The Dummy and a motlon p1c ure 'Strawberry Roan The b1g event of the year was the sen1or play In Old Vxrgmny, under the d1rect1on of Mr Gunnels whxch was successfully presented ln the spr1ng At last early one sprmg morn1ng, the tlme came for us to leave on our long awalted sen1or trxp We had chartered a bus and were now bound for the Ozarks A v1s1t to the Shepherd of the Hllls Country Rockaway Beach, the Falry Cave and beautxful Lake Taneycomo were the hlgh lu hts of our trxp On the thxrd day of our delxghtful Y1S1t to the Ozarks our happy, though a lxttle tlred group packed up and headed back home Upon our arrlval home we found that the Junlors had prepared a lovely banquet m our honor A farewell program to the commumty was presented by the class on the evenmg of May 15 On the evenmg of May 17 we appeared ln blue gowns and caps wlth gold tassels to recelve our dlplomas The Commencement speaker was The Rev P K Regler We have looked forward to these days of grad latlon throughout four years of hard work At last those days are here Hard lessons and tough exams have too become hlstory and we now remember them w1th Smlllng faces As we leave th1s school llfe, we must reallze that we have flnxshed, only to begm agam a dxfferent kmd of hfe 0 - , . . . . 1 1 1 1, 1 , , . . Schmidt lT ' ' 1 ' 1 ' 1 ' 1 ' ' -A 1 ' 1 I J Jsnzen, K Ratzlaff H Frey C Schmidt 'To create maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christain ch racter' is the purpose and go 1 of the H1 Y Club This was also the basic theme in the inspirational mes ages given by guest speakers and open discussions given in the study hall which was the meeting place of the club every other week It was also the privilege of the club to share special programs with the Y teens at Thanksgivf ng Christmas and Easter time Ae in former years .the club was again in charge of the sale of textbooks The proceeds of this activity were used to finance the v rious projects of the club These included a big study hall clock and stage furn4ture Not only were the meetings in the study hall of significance In the spring the fellows went on a camping trip Sleeping outside and frying bacon and eggs in the morning were the highlights About the same time the club sponsored an evening of fun for themselves and their parents inthe High School gym Various forms of entertainment was enjoyed by all The club also took advantage of the YMCA Building at Newton where an evening was spent in enjoyable recreation Again this year as in former years, the boys were in charge of devotions for chapel services every other week Every member had to read devotions when he was asked The cabinet met on Fridays, when there wssn't a meeting to discuss the problems and to approve the programs planned by the program committee Compliments of F D.
