The campus colors changing with the coming of autumn were high- lighted with the festive appearance of the students. As was wished, the football team came through with another win- ning season and a new addition to our trophy collection. The bookstore was packed and it seemed a useless attempt to try to get supplies. Through it all, new classes formed and each person began his new year with great ambition. A new and exciting road lay ahead. '+- Q1 A mural was painted in the lower hall in ad- dition to many new interesting bulletin boards, paintings, and pictures which appeared in class- rooms and halls. Not at all fazed by the newness of school, the seventh graders completed their first project of the year with great enthusiasm. Just as these projects helped them to become more familiar with the outside world, they also served as a new medium for becoming better acquainted with each other. QW L2 L i E. l One highlight of the successful foot- ball season was the Homecoming. King, Gordon Bennett, queen, Jane Stefaniak, and court, Lilarae Corkins, Mary Denton, Marlene Dickenson, Meri- lyn Johnson, Rose Rincione, and Sandra Willard, were chosen to reign over the occasion from the Class of 1954. During the half time, the queen was crowned, the band performed, and the Junior Class won first prize with their float. Following the game, the Homecom- ing Dance was held in the high school for iuniors and seniors with their guests. s .al ' , ,Q .W Sf Tw ,J - 5 ' L ,Ex ,O L f an J- Q7 A 5 I . it ' , Fix, -4--N' .lr , v ,-- . 4 mg: g J .hx . Probably the most helpful were the pep assemblies, the band, and the refreshment stand near the football field. The pep assemblies were held to urge the students to go to the games and cheer. The band furnished the school song and half-time entertainment for the spectators. The refreshment stand, operated by the Boosters Club and G Club, stood ready with refreshments to warm up the fans dur- ing the cold evenings of cheering. From December to February the scene changed at Godwin High. The campus had a white blanket covering the ground. The trees were bare and snow balls chased the girls to safety. With basketball season well on its way and school dances becoming more numerous, the students began to look for new ideas for entertainment, such as the Bunny Hop and whistle dances, each one of which 7 W was sponsored by different organizations. The students once more turned out to support the team. Pep assemblies, too, played an impor- tant part. As the 1954 Wolverine went to press, the basketball team was tied for second place and the future was bright for the tournaments. East . . . At Godwin even the girls played basketball under the supervision of the G.A.A. Teams were formed and games were played to determine a champion. The Christmas season came around and the school got into swing with the yuletide spirit. The A'Cappella and Band put on a Christmas program, which took the place of the usual Cantata, and everyone who attended enioyed the new arrangement. The feeling of giving was well stressed by the clubs with their gifts to the needy. Christmas trees were set up in the hall by the Student Council and the Red Cross for everyone to enioy. Ah! Christmas vacation . . . The students celebrated at an afternoon school party of singing and dancing. Both teachers and students participated. After returning from vacation, final preparations for exams were completed and changes took place on the campus and in the students. At this point in the year it is more difficult for the students to get-up-when-it's-stilI-dark, only to return to the routine curriculum especially after the exciting holiday season. After the exams had taken place and the new semester had begun, new classes formed. Some girls turned their high school curriculum to the co-operative pro- gram, designed to allow each girl who took commercial subiects to work It articles, and columns. With every student settled into his new position and anxiously awaited Spring iust around the corner, the Seniors looked forward to the tinish of their high school career. !'r3'1 and attend school both, still receiving full credit. The school newspaper, The Wolverine Edition, came out every two weeks through the Journalism class. New ideas were presented to the students in the form of stories, 4, YF' V it ltd Swv The sun looked down on the Godwin campus and awakened each part of nature with its warm, fresh smelling air. Spring meant the end forthe seniors. It meant all final plans were being made and the closing of school drew nearer. Typical of spring, music played an important part in the season. The A'Capella presented their operetta, Mikado. Young voices, too, followed the example set by the senior high students with great enthusiasm. On a typical warm May eve- ning the May Court Swing was pre- sented on the tennis courts and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Parties became a popular extra curricular activity, especially beach parties, since the weather had be- come so warm and the water so inviting. Anxiously awaited, the Prom finally arrived with every girl dressed in her loveliest attire. Plans for the occasion were made by the iuniors, who worked diligently to make this year's Prom the best ever. The next day found many students either just return- ing from the beach party, which followed the occasion, or neatly tucked in bed in an attempt to make up for lost time. After the exciting weekend of the Prom, students once again returned to the classrooms. Study halls found many students al- ready reviewing tor the final exams or daydreaming about the summer vacation to come. The seniors had returned from their annual class trip either to Chi- cago, Mackinac lsland, and Detroit or to New York City. Plans were made and completed for Class Day, Baccalaureate, and finally Gradu- ation. For the seniors the long hoped for day had arrived and their fu- ture road lay ahead. The end of joyous high school years had come. However, for the underclassmen next year would otter even more than this eventful 1953-54.
