R I I I CITIIIIISCIIIQ Later on as years roll by, We'll think of things, and then we'1l sigh, Of high school days, of making friends, And wonderful things we hoped wouldn't end. The sensation of starting in Ir. High Why, we were so excited we thought we could fly! The laughter, excitement and noise in the hall Was a part of the day and loved by all. We never were so happy, We never had such fun, We stayed many years at Godwin, Instead of just one. We have loved Godwin dearly and deeply, And all that she stood for, so shining and pure. Since that first day, we entered her hallway We then felt at home and secure. Claudine Ward 43 BOY Iim Taylor . . . Iirn Taylor . . Loren Wilson . . Vern Norris . Loren Wilson . . Ken Weernhoff . But, no, turned out to be the Iuniors and their elections. Should have known that in the first place. Good thing wise choices were made in the officers . . . it was a BIG year. Lucky they had Miss Keller as ad- visor. Even though the Iuniors took themselves quite seriously they wedged in a bit of recreation. Surely liked their parties . . . especially the Iunior-Senior mixer. Every minute was full of fun! Laughter . . . tense silence . . . suspense . . . all that filled the gym after the curtain went up for the Iunior play, Come Rain or Shine. Secrets . . . and more secrets. lt was no sur- prise to find Miss Bloore and Miss Keller with their heads together. The Iuniors were busy buzz- ing around. Miss Mac Donald, being the advisor, kept up with them - or ahead. Some job tool After that big poster campaign she had trusty officers to help carry on. And they did! Guess the Sophs decided to get early training for their Senior year. They had a mock election too. Published in the April Fool News. What am I saying? Maybe you'll get the wrong idea. Lateral Pass The football season was off to a good start when Norris, Sargent, Wilson, l-lolwerda, Van- derBand, and Payne were back. All lettermen tool Coach Robinson was mighty proud of his squad. It was the lightest and scrappiest group of players in Godwin's history. Don't think the best teams in the Grand Valley Conference didn't respect them either. How it rained at the Zeeland gamel But it didn't stop Blain and I-Iolwerda from lugging the leather along with the long punts of Norris. f Lowell, the Conference Champs, found that victory couldn't be won on running plays, when Sargent, Van Houten and Koorndyk did some brilliant line backing -although Norris and VanderBand ran smashing touchdown plays and Wilson flanked the ends, Godwin lost to a highly rated Lee eleven 20 to 12. -'- Tearing to shreds the line rated best and heaviest in the Conference, VanderBand's bucking over tackles and Blain's quarter back sneak, both netted scores set off by the long end runs of Wilson and I-iolwerda. ln this game the line showed the best coordination. We Smooth passing by quarterback Blain to ends, Payne and Fryling with the neat running of Taylor, Vander- Band and Holwerda led to a never-to-be-forgotten game with Grandville, The Wolves were really handicapped for the rest of the season after Vronko, a Sophomore line- man, and Wilson, a Senior right half, both suf- fered from broken legs. How l hated seeing those fellows being carried off the field. Next year will find lettermen Miedema, De Graves, Sargent, Houlihan, Koorndyk and Dangl returning. Dog Shots Must hand it to Coach Huttenga and the Wol- verines for the fighting spirit which won them a tie for second place with East Grand Rapids in the Grand Valley Basketball Conference! The Zeeland Chicks downed the fighting Wolves in both non-conference games during the season. - Showing more fight, the Wolves defeated Lowell twice, once in an overtime game. What excitement! - The Rams of Rockford defeated the Godwin quintet twice, but in one game Brunges and Koordyk scored l4 and l9 points respectively. In the second game, the Godwin boys once more took a licking although G. Evink alone racked up 10 points. - Recovering from this loss the Wolve cage team won a well deserved win over the lads from East. Feeling the loss of Brunges and Hol- werda the Godwinites bowed before a strong East team in the second phase of the cage season. - Lee High with a team of tall veterans and an undefeated season handed the Wolves their next defeat. Coming back for revenge in the second game against the Rebels, the Godwinites won by a narrow score of 28 to 27. - Grandville fell prey to the Wolves in both games of the season, being defeated in close rough games. - The Vikings from Wyoming suffered two losses at the hands of the Godwin cagers. The season closed with the Wolves in second place with 4 conference losses, 2 non-conference losses and 8 wins! Guess that shows they had what it takes! The Godwin reserves coached by Mr. I-loebeke showed fight and spirit. Know many future pros- pects for an even better Godwin cage team will come from them. SECOND TEAM First row: . Kruis .. With Coach l-loebeke showing them the finer points of the game, the boys got off to a good start in trouncing Hudsonville, Kelloggsville, Lee, and Wyoming in our own class, and trimming Ottawa, Catholic Central, Cboth Class A schoolsl, and Aquinas College. They have been beaten but three times, then at the hands of Class A schools. Though the season is but holf over, the Wolves figure to be in there when the trophies are handed out, but the stiffest opposition is yet to come.
