History of the Class ol 1940 Here we are f 74 young people, Godwins largest graduating class to date, about to be turned loose on the world. What lies ahead we know not: as for the past, let us review it, In the year 1934, 70 eager 7th graders boarded an imaginary train which was to take them on an exciting sixfyear trip. Elmo Moore was the class president, Miss Bright, the advisor. At that stage, life seemed to hold nothing more serious than fun and boisterousness. Poor Mr. Kutsche! While he was endeavoring to keep half of us quiet, the other half was engaged in a firstfclass riot. The end of our first year's trip found us at Garneld Park enjoying the annual school picnic, The fall of 1935 saw our train again on its way. We lost two good teachers, Miss Grace Miller and Mr. Wilbur Myers. For the several students we lost, we gained others. Harry King became our president, Charles Bush was vicefpresident, Gladys Granstrom was secretary, and Don DeKoster took charge of our treasury. That year we found ourselves under the supervision of a new teacher, Miss Chynoweth. She brought with her a china cow, Bessie, who was duly adopted as a class mascot. QWalt Disney may have his Ferdinand S we'll take our Bessie., During the year Ina Bloore wrote a few plays, one of which The Musical Partyu was rehearsed and given in the auditorium for some of the other grades. We made our own newspaper The Qriolen and published one edition. Vvfe still are proud of those little papers. A cleanfup campaign was sponsored, and a pep meeting was given by us for an assembly. That year ended with a picnic at johnson Park. In September, 1936, we became high school freshmen. When our train pulled out on the third lap of its journey, the 78 students aboard chose Ray Darrow to be president: Phyllis Van Portfleet, vicefpresident1 Barbara Christiansen, secretary: .lane Van Eizenga, treasurer. The sophomores kept us in misery. torture, and wondering fear by holding off the initiation until November. Some of the new teachers f- Mr. tContinued on Page 465 if ,..s ,J .. 'L. . 1 Margaret A.
