The 1901 to 1958 Thanksgivings Martin Wells Knapp, the founder of God's Bible School, caught the vision of feed- ing underprivileged children while visiting the mission work of a co-laborer, Seth C. Rees, in Chicago. The first Thanksgiving dinner given by God's Bible School for Cin- cinnati's children was in 1901. The city was divided into sections, and students in groups of four or five went from house to house to invite the children. Five hundred invitations were given out. The turkeys were roasted in a Brother Martin's Restaurant downtown, and the rest of the preparation for the great feast was done at the school by the students. Three hundred children enjoyed that first Thanksgiving dinner on the Hilltop. In 1958 our student body is many times the size that it was in 1901. Now we include the children of all Greater Cincinnati. To the 58th Thanksgiving Dinner 9,140 were invited and about 6,000 were present to enjoy the marvelous object lessons pre- sented b Rev. Daniel Woodward and the music and singing of special talented students in the tabernacle, and the deliciously prepared food in the dining room. To feed our invited guests several busy hours were spent in solicitation, fixing the dining room, and preparing the food. We sliced 1,200 dill pickles Broke 597 loaves of bread for dressing Pin-feathered, baked and took from the bone 3,800 pounds of turkey. Peeled and eyed 2,800 pounds of potatoes Peeled 180 pounds of onions Cleaned 5 crates of celery Filled more than 8,000 goody bags with peanuts, candy and oranges. We hope we were able to touch many hearts. God has said that His word would not return unto Him void, and those that lendeth to the poor lendeth to the Lord.
